So....I saw a Freemanson Temple the other day...
« on: July 16, 2007, 03:42:02 pm »
I was in DC chilling out walking around when I found it. I have some pictures of the outside, but they're on my camera phone and at night, so you can't really see much. I can put them up later if people care. They give tours, but the number posted on the wall was wrong, and it was a weekend, so I'm sure the masons were pretty busy doing Freemason stuff.

Here's a google pic: http://ownthepress.com/wp-content/uploads/scottish%20temple.jpg

Down a few blocks was the founding church of Scientology. I walked by and word for word, the guy outside said "Hey, you want in?".

Dupont circle is such a fun place.

I'm not sure they call them temples (since I don't think Freemasonry isn't a religion per se).

But you have to admire a building that advertises old-world mysticism like that. If churches were that impressive I still wouldn't go, but they would be a lot cooler.

Though If people did convert to specific religons based upon how cool they looked, Judaism would probably be a lot more popular then it is now.  ;)
What we lack in Marble architecture we make up for with Bar Mitzvah parties and Mel Brooks films.

As for the building, Wow. What exactly are freemasons though? As much as I've heard of them I know very little about them. Mainly that it's all somewhat mysterious.

What meme is relevant right now? Look, just imagine I'm riffing on that. Updating signatures is exhausting.

I saw one in Louisiana and recently read this big thick book about them, they're very interesting. (I still only got halfway through before the semester ended.)

Their meeting places are called lodges, and I will probably seriously consider join when I'm 21 or something.

Sorry, can't say things like that, it's supposed to be all secret. I do admire their discipline though.
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

Seriously though, I saw a freemason temple down on hollywood blvd, next door to the Kodak theater (across from the Graumen-manz chinese theater). Apparently its now used to film the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. OOOOOh how the mighty have fallen.

Don't shake hands with a scientologist unless you are ready to 'rumble'. My experience with these arrogant ************* is that they hold your hand until they can finish their little speech. They have no interest in debate, only to preach, and they will not let go until you agree with them. It is their power play. FYI, the human arm naturally only rotates on its long axis about 360-390 degrees, with force you can get to about 450 before the screaming hurts your ears and you have to give the guy his arm back.

On topic, if you want to see some other interesting buildings, look up the Bah' faith. They have temples all over the world, and the variation in architecture is quite impressive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahai

My opinion of the Free Masons is best left unpublished, but I'd rather shake hands with a scientologist.

and what exactly would that achieve?

You'd just end up with the Abrahamic religions forming an uneasy alliance against the religions derived from Hinduism. Assuming that one side could 'win' the ensuing debate the winning alliance would schizm repeatedly and you'd be back on square one.

Or they'd start on the "Many paths to the same destination"  and gang up on the Atheist.

Atheism is not a religion.

Heh, you'd have to have a few different atheists representing other philosophies. And whilst it isn't technically a religion, you'd be surprised how many people treat it in virtually the same fashion.

That's a lie Daxx, atheism is not, and never will, resemble a religion. Ever. At all. And that is absolutely, unquestionably true. If you don't stop spouting such obvious lies, I will get together my atheist crew, and we'll burn you at the stake for your heresy!

Well, describe your own.

Atheism isn't a single thing. It just describes someone who isn't a theist.

Buddhists are atheists. I think Scientologists are, too (I could be wrong). There are other examples.

Well my philosophy is in conflict right now; I've become less religious as I've gotten older and learned things for myself. I suspect I'll become someone who's more interested in why humans need religion than in having one myself, becoming very religious as I grow old as a precautionary measure.  :P

It would be best not to become very religious or go either way, so that is one religion does happen to be right, then maybe you'll be spared because you did not take sides. That's the way I'm doing it. Ain't nothing right until I see it.

I really don't think you're supposed to pick and choose religions like that.

Pascal (famous mathematician, physicist, and philosopher from 1600s) thought choosing religions based on afterlife wasn't such a bad idea.

Quote
"God either exists or He doesn't. Based on the testimony, both general revelation (nature) and special revelation (Scriptures/Bible), it is safe to assume that God does in fact exist. It is abundantly fair to conceive, that there is at least 50% chance that the Christian Creator God does in fact exist. Therefore, since we stand to gain eternity, and thus infinity, the wise and safe choice is to live as though God does exist. If we are right, we gain everything, and lose nothing. If we are wrong, we lose nothing and gain nothing. Therefore, based on simple mathematics, only the fool would choose to live a Godless life. Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have nothing to lose. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is."

Pascal's wager is a massive crock of something steaming. Here's why:

1. Even if it did offer infinite advantages to believe in god, the best an atheist could realistically do is pretend to believe. You can't just force yourself to believe in something.

2. Pascal's wager assumes that there is only one god that could potentially be the real one. What if the real God is actually Osiris? Osiris may not mind if people don't believe in him specifically, and could still reward atheists in the afterlife if they've been good people. However, what might really rub up Osiris the wrong way is if people believe in a deity other than him. Such people would be sent to hell for ever and ever. If Osiris is the one true god, then following Pascal's wager results in eternal damnation and it would be much better to be an atheist or a follower of Osiris.

Oh I agree that Pascal's wager is logically incorrect for numerous reasons, it is still fascinating to think about. Taking a completely non biased / non emotional approach to religion is very thing hard to do for anybody, even for atheists.

I really don't think you're supposed to pick and choose religions like that.

I think that not enough people actually examine other religions and make a decision.  Many people I think just accept what is given them.  Others simply examine religion, don't see the logic, and leave it behind.

Do you want someone who's really believes what they spout?  Teach them about many of the other religions of the world, make sure they have a good understanding, and then let them have regular talks with an athiest that is very good at explaining why they think God does not exist.  If they survive it all without simply ignoring everything they hear and while retaining their beliefs, then I'll call them devout.  However, people who are born and raised a certain way, only to cover their ears and go "LALALALALALA" whenever you start challenging them... they are the ones I wonder about.

Hmm, good point. I shall research which religions are most leneant on members of others in the afterlife, and join the strictist.

Stop! Image macro time:

Quote from: The Will
In a movie, one can always pull back and condemn the character or the artist ... But in playing a game ... we can be encouraged to examine our own values by seeing how we behave within virtual space.
tl;dr. But with all those shiny symbols and numbers it's probably awsome.
