Dexter.
« on: July 10, 2007, 09:53:45 am »
i have been watching this show, somepeople say its not a good show but i have thought about it and i have decided it is.

the show's main character and narrater is a emotionless serial killer named Dexter Morgan. It does a fantastic job of getting you into the mind of this killer as you hear the contrast between how he speaks to people and how he thinks and as you also hear Dexter's thoughts as he struggles to understand how "socially acceptable people" think and why they behave so.

Ever since his childhood he has felt an urge to kill, his foster father found out and he realised that their is no way to remove this urge and being a policeman he decided to teach his son how to kill but to only ever kill other murderers who the police force have failed to catch. Now Dexter has grown up and he is a blood splatter expert working for the police, when they fail to catch, he moves in.

But by far the absoloute best part about this series is its soundtrack, its fantasticly hispanic and vibrant but can also dark and even satanic.

this is really worth watching but its a bit of a love it or hate it.

really worth watching

Question: How can a soundtrack be "Satantic"?

If you play it backwards does it say stuff like "Hail the lord of the all satan evil. hey kids, come on and kill all you that is unbelievens"

Satanic as in a very emotive word used to describe dark and gloomy things, in this case, music. i admit that was a bad choice of words,

watch the show.

Wow, I've watched the first two episodes so far, and this show is amazing! It's really cool how they can get you to like Dexter even though he portrays a character who is usually a bad guy in most shows. He kinda reminds me of a more intelligent Sylar, but I like him better.

not many people i know watch this show, its really underappreciated.

i just love how they make even the most mondane things seem sinister,

watch the video of Dexter getting ready in the morning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpyJMfDhdN0

notice the tiny well done details that make you think he is a bit evil or twisted,

the smile after he crushes the bug,
the way he tightly wraps his shoe laces is done in a way as if he had strangles people with wire,
when he puts his top on you see his face pressing against the inside of his top and he is making a sli9ghtly distressed face, like its one of his victims wrapped in his trademark cling film.
when he cuts the fruit and juice sprays out like blood,
tomato sauce on the knife looks like blood.

when i explain those things it sounds stupid but when you wtach it you relaise what i mean.

Just finished the first series... I loved it almost as much as I love Battlestar, if not more maybe.

Spoiler *maybe*:

Am I the only one who thinks that Dexter isn't actually "evil"?  You'd probably say that the ice truck killer is insane and more damaged than Dexter, but personally I feel that the show (credit where credit is due - the books rather) deals with your average person's psyche.  It's clear with Dexter that he does feel emotion despite what the narrative says, and that he is affected by his relationships with others, but he just doesn't particularly care unless it specifically affects him or impacts his own life in some way, which he describes as him being "dead inside" or "emotionless".

Dexter doesn't really feel emotions, he can tell what emotion he should be feeling and he can understand the emotions of other people, but he doesn't really feel them.

Dexter seems evil but he's not, if he was evil he wouldn't follow the code of Harry and he would take enjoyment when he kills, he doesn't kill for enjoyment, he kills to satisfy the urge.

Dexter clearly felt emotions when he killed his brother.  He tried to zone out when shagging Rita for the first time but ended up feeling a thrill and enjoying it.  Sorry, but I don't buy the whole "Dexter doesn't feel emotion" crap which the narrative pulls, because on many occasions in regards to a situation where it does affect Dexter, he says something like, "Why am I reacting this way... Dexter doesn't feel emotions".

Also, he doesn't break the code of Harry because if he does then he will feel bad/guilty about it.  That's emotion, but he doesn't admit or realise it.  That's just my opinion on it though, and I haven't read the books and don't know the author's thoughts about what exactly Dexter feels.

Dexters a very well designed (but more important to the conversation) Complex character, he may change or start to, i dunno.

Dexter also said "i know their pain, i can even understand their pain, i just can't feel their pain."

if it wasn't for the narratice i would hate this show. i just love Dexters narrating.

my favoruite so far is when he puts a new drop of blood in his collection and he says to the drop of blood "well mike, welcome to your last change of address, you'll love it here, you have so much in common with your new naighbors."

That's what he says, but what I'm saying is that I don't believe the narrative.  The narrative is supposed to represent Dexter's thoughts, and even though he believes he can't feel these emotions, I think that there are enough examples in the show of where he does feel them.

I also have to agree with Lord Janos. Dexter clearly feels emotions. I just think sometimes he doesn't know what the emotion is. He is clearly detached while he kills (some exceptions). But While he isn't he is starting to experience and understand emotion more.

I eat while watching them too. But really it's because I spoiled myself. I watched them do graphic makeup for a movie and ever since that nothing phases me. I totally robbed myself of the magic of gore. And I still think the majority of people wouldn't be disgusted by it. Disgusted is pretty strong, that's like you won't even look at it. I just saw the pilot episode yesterday since it just started here in Denmark. So far it looks very promising.

I just realised I don't get Showtime here in Canada.

Guess I'll just have to continue watching it on the net.  :'(

They took away all the good cartoons and replaced them with Camp Lazlo, Fairly Oddparents, and Avatar.

They even replaced Rugrats with the tv abomination "All grown up".

I am not a happy camper. I had a load of people over last week and someone swiped my copy of Dexter. I have ripped my apartment apart and put it back together, it is nowhere to be found. I've asked everyone no one is saying anything... gar!

Yeah. Why did they even replace Rugrats with that "All grown up"? Rugrats was great.

I am highly disappointed in this topic. :P

I kinda miss Dexter's Lab, or to be exact, the Justice Friends and other spin-offs and parodies. :D

About DEXTER, looks like I'm gonna like this... 8)

I just love shows like this, where people often get killed and everyone is kinda philosophical and then goes on discussing about morality and stuff like that. Can't wait to watch... Hehehe... 8)

I was browsing my local HMV and to my surprise there was a copy of the Dexter Soundtrack. Not thinking twice I picked it up and am currently grooving to the Miami beats and Dexter talking about the code of Harry. The case even comes in a wonderful blood red case. Very good CD so far!  ;D

I missed most of season 2 so I bought it the other day and just finished a Dexter marathon. I think I liked season 1 better. In this it felt more like Dexter was too busy avoiding the police and planting evidence to just do what he normally does.  And Lila... wow....psycho

Okay, so like I said I've been watching the hell out of this show.

Just made it to the end of season 4. I felt pretty bad when Lundy died because I adored that man.

So I just about had a ****ing heart attack when Rita turns up dead in the last minute of season four's finale. waaghagslksd

I like this show. I'm very invested.
Certainly one of the better colds I've suffered through.

EDIT: Holy balls, it's weird watching a show this old all at once like this. 2006 this bugger started, and I've seen four seasons in the last week.
Man.
