Sonic RPG in the works.

Read the article. SEGA's latest attempts at improving Sonic's image haven't been stellar, but they are trying. What does everyone have to say about this?

I'm just curious as to how the speedy hedgehog will work in an RPG based game. But I can picture it after playing a game like Sonic Battle for GBA. And with a notable studio like BioWare working on it, what can we expect?

if this ends in a failure, i'll make the following statement:

'let sonic die. if you love him you have to let him go.'
"Apply layers to Reality
Things only you can see
Add a beat to Normality
To tap the core of Insanity"

I just don't see it working out well. Mario worked well in an RPG because the Mario universe has a lot of interesting characters to work with, as well as all the potential.

Sonic's got what? Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman and a bunch of other minor characters that people could care less about.

I'd love to be proven wrong and it actually works well, though. It'll probably require a unique story, but Sonic could use a new story. Hard to say if BioWare actually will deliver on that.

The 360/PS3 game was really the last straw for me, it doesn't matter how great the old Mega Drive games were, constant terrible sequels have killed him stone dead.  However, if there's anyone that could revive the series, then it's Bioware, I'm looking forward to what they can do with it.

And I think the Sonic universe has at least as much interesting things about it to make it as good as a Mario RPG, and I suspect Bioware will want quite a bit of creative freedom for this anyway.

I wish BioWare was working on a new IP for the DS. Sonic (sigh), maybe they'll do something good with it?

Wow just this morning I was thinking of something so similar to this I must be like having some kind of clairvoyance or something. After random surfing youtube and crossing the Mario/Sonic/Dragonball Z thing made me think if something like that could translate into an RPG, or even if Sonic alone would work in RPG format. Either way if it can be done Bioware can do it.

I hate what the Sonic series has become: a 'badass' attitude that 14-year olds love combined with a miserable attempt at epicity what with godlike powers being given out like candy, all in a setting with realistic humans speaking to cartoon animals.

I think the Super Mario RPG would have been less well-recieved if it included cars, guns and self-loathing circlejerks.

They could easily fix the Sonic series if they stopped trying to make it so story-driven and if they ****ING DEBUGGED THEIR GAMES PROPERLY. Making a Sonic RPG doesn't bode well for the first thing, though.

I'm the biggest Bioware fan out there, and I'm sure this game will be loads of fun, but I just can't stand Sonic The Hedgehog and all those assorted characters, and his games aren't very good either so I have mixed feelings about this game.

I read a rather vauge interview IGN had with the developers. I think the BioWare director sounded a bit overly enthusiastic about the whole thing. SEGA also said that they felt that they are capable of making the RPG themselves being that they claim they are "one of the greatest developers." But wanted to add double the power by joining with another great developer. (Notice how I didn't add parenthesis in BioWare's case.) I think SEGA was afraid to admit they couldn't pull it off by themselves.

I'm 14. I object. Even I'm more mature than that. Sonic is aimed at 8-10 year olds. Hell, I stopped playing Sonic at 7. Too easy. Too many characters. Marios better.

You know that interview made me feel better about the game. They got people who worked oh.....that one game(crap what the hell brain!) any way it was one of their big ones, Ha Baulders Gate! (stupid brain). So that made me feel better. Also they say they're big sonice fans, so it sounds likeit's somehting they want ot do as to appose to just being payed to do.

BioWare is making a Sonic game.....

Didn't see that one coming.

Edit: That interview on IGN was extremely annoying. It was basically just BioWare praising themselves and SEGA and not giving any info about the game whatsoever.

It was really dumb for IGN to interview them this early. They barely even got started to even have much of anything like a screenshot or something.

What's funny is that this is not the first time I've heard of a Sonic RPG coming out.  Back in 1992, back in a time when Sonic was actually popular and had fans Sega planned to make a game featuring Sonics sister that would be a conversion of a popular Japanese RPG called Popful Mail or something like that.  The plan was scrapped after Sega of Japan got nasty responses from fans of said game, but some of the concepts like a pink female hedgehog would enter later Sonic games.

The second time a Sonic RPG was announced was when a group called Panovation Studios stated it was working on a MMORPG based around the Sonic Universe.  It ended up being a fraud, but they went to great lengths to make it seem real, even posting on Sega.com's forum claiming to have had interviews with Sega employees about the project.

So there you go, some fun video game history

Based on the collective reviews of this game, it lies superior to mediocrity but just a notch below greatness.

Overall the game has great merits and is a must-have.

I got this baby, admittedly it gets annoying at first when the vaguely named stat effects aren't even in the manual, but other than that I enjoyed it a good deal.  Getting to cast haste after your first battle ain't bad either.

I beat this a while back......
Yeah.....IT SUCKS. BAD.

That fight when you first get into the town, near Tails' workshop.....
I had to try that like 800 times. Then after a while I got stuck on a similar battle. They really overpowered some enemies. The way those enemies revive if you don't kill them all at once was a BAD IDEA. And later enemies block too much. If you run out of PP for special attacks, you're screwed. Not only that, 45% of the storyline is redundant junk.

I'd give it about a 3 outta 10.

Because you're rating a game because you think it's too hard.  That's because of skill levels, not the game's fault.  It was annoying when it came as a surprise the first time, but you do get 10-15 attack rounds each turn, depending on who makes up your team.

good point. I'm not saying the rating was on skill level, no. It got knocked down by redundant but necesary side quests used as filler, like that one with the big scorpion. And they could have made the early enemies a wee bit easier.

Well said Gec.  There was one annoying part though, the mission where your team of however many had to split into two groups.  Mind you I had over eight (those without the bonus chars had to leave holes in their roster) but they force you to keep sonic and tails separate.  Thanks to Tails' ability to ramp sonic's turn count to ludicrous levels in addition to keeping sonic's pp at the max, this made the fights a bit tougher for me.  However, I was already using Cream over Tails anyways.  She has mass heals, and also has an ability that gives everyone (including herself) 8pp at the expense of 10.  If you use Sonic, Shadow, Tails, and Cream, you can use cream to ramp everyone else's pp, tails to recover cream's pp with medi-bot, and trigger Shadow's chaos warps every turn to instant k.o. the enemy.  Sonic's maxed whirlwind should be able to take care of the leftovers.

Cream gives everyone 5-15pp at the expense of eight. She never runs out of PP if you upgrade that move.

Besides, everyone knows Knuckles is the best character.
Not a winner anymore.
