DS game advice!
« on: June 07, 2007, 01:05:39 pm »
I hate to start so many threads in this board, but what the hey...

So, I set off to New York on Saturday. First trip out of Europe, and I consider it my first trip to a big city (my day trip to London sucked so much that I regret getting excited about it ever) I'll be there for 4 days (and Orlando for 10)

So I'm going with 200 Buy-whatever-the-hell-you-like dollars. The first thing on my shopping list? DS games.

I may just buy 1, but I kinda expect to buy 2 (enough to keep my satisfied for the long ride home)

I'm the kinda person who likes games like AC, all the Pokemon games, Sims 2, Nintendogs (but not that much). Yeah, the soft core easy-listening equivalent games.

I'm not buying puzzle games because I get tired and bored of them really fast (trust me here.)

So you probably know what I'm asking, what to buy?!?!

Oh, and don't suggest games for any other consoles. :p

No way dude, you're trolling me.

New Super Mario Bros. is a must for any DS owner. Plus it has some stupid-fun minigames.

Either of the Castlevania games on DS are suppesedly very good. I haven't picked either of them up, but I hear Dawn of Sorrow is now only $20 USD, so now may be the time!

Elite Beat Agents is a very addictive rhythm game that is great fun even if you aren't much of a fan of rhythm games.

If you're into RPG's, Final Fantasy III, Etrian Odyssey, and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time are all safe bets.

And I hear that Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is pretty good if you like the sort of point-and-click adventure games.

Oh, I forgot to mention (I know this is weird) I get bored/stuck in Mario games, so not for my cash. I still like them though.

The New Super Mario Bros isn't that hard one or 2 or the castles might have you stuck the it was only the last castle that gave me any real trouble but thats just work out how to pass like one area then u can do the rest of the room easy and no worries from there. In the end not that hard.

Partners in time is good it is a very very casual RPG very light on your RPG basically follow the path and battle the bad guys as you encounter them. You shouldn't get stuck anywhere for too long I don't think I even died once in the game.

If you don't have Mario Kart yet whats wrong with you the entire Mario Kart series is the type of game you can get hours upon hours of fun just doing the mushroom cup races again and again. I owned the SNES Mario Kart I myself never finished it never wanted to just played 150cc mushroom cup constantly. My brother finished it though so it still looks good.

New Super Mario Bros. - I'll give it a look in the stores, but I very much doubt I'll be buying it

Partners in Time - I shoulda mentioned, my friend has about 15 DS games and this is one of them, I can borrow it from him and play it anytime.

Mario Kart - He has this game too. I have played it so much it isn't funny no more. :(

Harvest Moon is a good sandbox game like AC. It can help pass the time on a long trip.

Yeah, I've played Harvest Moon before, it's pretty fun. That goes in my "maybe" pile.

So I got my cash just now. I was in the bank and the woman asked "Do you wish to withdraw 200 Euros, or dollars?"
Heh, I didn't know I'd have the choice. After thinking long and hard for about two milliseconds, I withdrew Euros. One quick trip to the Bureau du Change and I have not 200, but 260 dollars!

The extra 60 really sweetens the deal, that means I'm more willing to buy more games.

Metroid Prime: Hunters is good if you like multiplayer shooters.

Yoshi's Island DS is a fun platformer.

I don't know what else to tell you. You're kind of just shooting down all the ideas we're giving you. :-\

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime: Gaming Steve mentioned it at one point and I got it over last year's Christmas, it starts a bit slow, but the tank battles are really fun.

Wario Ware Touched: If you like the quirky, fast paced Microgames, these don't disappoint. Might want to have another game, because this really can't be played hours on end, but it does have its fun.

Advance Wars Series They are a bit heavier than other games, but they have hours of strategic fun. And if you are going with a couple friends, you can pass around the DS and play multiplayer that way. The first two are GBA games, but can't ignore the fact that the DS can play them.

Rocket Slime and Wario Ware, they sound good.

Advance War Series, I don't really know that much about. I'll check it out.

Just don't go into Metroid Prime: Hunters expecting a portable rendition of the console games.

The game focuses on the multiplayer, and should be seen much more as a multiplayer shooter rather than as a single-player focused adventure like the console games.

Of course, you can also play the multiplayer either with bots or over Wi-fi, so you don't need a second DS to play.

EDIT: Get Advance Wars. It's very very good.

That's all I have to say about it. ;D

Well, whatever you get, tells us what you think of them after you get back.

I'll probably betray myself and buy Pokemon Ranger, then hate myself for a few weeks. :(

My girlfriend got that a few months back and she seemed disappointed by it. She didn't go into details, but she did mention something about missions being too easy and the "battles" being unproportionally frustrating.

That's why I said I'd hate myself, I would just buy it on impulse...

I promise everyone I'll try not to, if I do, the gun's in the top left drawer.

I almost was going to suggest Advanced wars my self. The only thing that stopped me is it isn't a light game or an easy game. It is a game you can go back to if you put the time in when you are between games you can do a mission here and there. If you think you might like it you will love it and find your self laying awake plotting strategy.

I thought you didn't have a DS Santa?

Are you borrowing it from a friend, or did you just pick one up?

You're going to PAX this year?

Sweet!

If the timing of my pilgrimige to Seattle is right, I may end up going too. What are the dates?

Well, I almost always play my DS at my house anyways. During long car/airplane trips, I will usually leave it behind in favor of music or a book. Go figure. :D

I ended up not buying a game at all, so I feel stupid for making this thread.

However, my little bro bought pokemon pearl, so we have both versions and can trade. ;D

The DS Advice thread was locked, so I'm not too sure where to put this.

I'll be going on my travels in a couple of days here, and I'll be gone off and on all summer. I usually don't play any games when I travel in favor of reading or music instead, but I'll probably bring my DS just in case.

So I was thinking something along the lines of SimCity DS or Planet Puzzle League...

EDIT:

Was just looking more into SimCity DS...I'd rather play SimCity 4. In that case, I guess it'll be Planet Puzzle League (or Puzzle Quest, or something similar).
