The Barroc
« on: April 27, 2007, 11:46:29 am »
Here's my creature the Barroc.
sorry if it the image isn't so good, this is my first time using the scanner.
Barroccians are humanoid, having a body identical to that of a human (the only difference is that Barroccians are larger and have a more powerful build) They are about 2,7 metres in height. They are carnivores and have shark-like teeth and have two large mandibles located just above the mouth that are used to create chirps and clicks to communicate and  to hold on to prey (dead or alive) so they can slowly eat them. They have four sets of long claws on each limb that were used to climb on rocks and to crush The prey's bones. They have two long antennae that have a small but complex nervous system inside that ''smells'' the air, similiar to how snakes ''smell'' heat, the antennae are connected to the eyes and the brain. The eyes are complex and are bright yellow, the allow the Barroc to see in a thermal vision if its a subspecies thats adapted to cold envirements, ''smell'' vision to warm regions and normal vision in mild climates.

Well, i'll be the first one to tell you that most people on this board laothe humans or human-like aliens. Pretty ironic considering each and every one of the posters are humans themselves, lol.

But you creature looks pretty cool. I like the whisker-antennae and the long claws. Kinda reminds me of a hairless sloth with a fu-man-chu mustache. Which of course is a good thing  ;D.

Great job, can't wait for more info on them  :D.
I have photo paint, Taven style yarr :P.

Heheh I knows, thats why I tried to make them look less like humans by (trying to) giving them a slouching appearance with a diseased body and such. And I didn't try to make them look like a sloth, I had this thin scary creature in my mind but my inferior drawing skills hurt my eyes XD.
Thanks by the way.

A few extra things.

A young Barroc Hunter: Hunters were respected in early Barroc culture, since most of the lands that they inhabited were unfit for agriculture. Hunters fought with powerful creatures and brought back the bodies, which could have been used for everything. The Hunters gained more respect if they fought larger creatures and if they brought back more food. This encouraged more battles.

An elder Hunter: The older hunters had more wounds and had more trophies  then the younger ones and had more respect, they were heavily valued in the Stone Age till the Medieval Age because of their experience in hunting and fighting and were often used as enforcers and Generals in early warfare. This gave them a high position in soceity.

Thanks!  ;D

A larger update now.

Biology
Barrocs have purple or brown skin, it depends whitch sub-species they are. They're antennae grows as the Barroc grows older and starts to grow smaller ones next to the larger ones and underneath the skin. In time the old Barroc has a large ''beard'' and ''moustache''.
When the elderly start to grow they're antennae, they're eyes start to ''shrink'' because they have no need for them. Usually Barrocs don't reach the age when they completely lose they're eyes. Barrocs have a long lifespan of at least 700 years.

History
The first sentient Barrocs still lived as they're ancestors: Sleeping on the ground, hunting without weapons. The first Barroc ''emperor'' was Kuluk the Great, an allready very old Barroc chieftain who made certain early discoveries, like: Building tents, making weapons, pottery and he layed the foundation for both the honour codes of Hunters as well as a blueprint for the Holy Barroccian Empire.
He conquered large parts of the Great Plains because he fitted his warriors with leather and bone armour. At its height, the Kuluk Empire stretched from the northern parts of the Halachim Desert to the Southern Part of the Engo Steppe Realm. He built a large city (Zamopalae Gelek) in the valley of the Cherufe Spine Mountains and declared both the City and the Cherufe species as a whole holy. After his death 200 years later his empire fell apart in small, nomadic fiefdoms. (More soon when I'm not so lazy)

More info.

Religion
Most of the Barroc believe that the Cherufe are holy. Cherufes are a surviving ancestor of the Barroc and a few other species, the Cherufes survived because of their place in the food chain and because of their bodybuild. Cherufes appeared when Kuluch Narch was still a nuclear Hell, filled with irradiated oceans, impact craters of asteroids (because the atmosphere was very polluted and thus not as effective at stopping rocks than before and later) and ashplains. Scientists now believe that the 1, 5 milion years of the ''Nuclear Hell'' was created by a large alien millitary cruiser crashing into the south pole (It still is irradiated and hazardous for Barrocs to enter, and is also the breeding ground of Cherufes) Cherufes adapted to this timeperiod by evolving defence againts the radiation, special ''cooldown'' holes on their sides to allow them to release nuclear air they breath and even assimilating nuclear attoms into their bloodstream, giving them ''pumped-up'' blood. Later their hearts started to spawn smaller sister hearts to pump the blood through their bodies at immense speeds, making their three hearts the equivalent of a small nuclear reactor. This also allowed them to grow to massive sizes, the largest one ever recorded was the size of a blue whale and weighed over 120 tons. The larger ones however, pump their bloods through their bodies at normal speed, forcing them to move slower. These Cherufes were forced to live in the seas or in vulcanoes, where they fed on the creatures who fed on the lavabacteria.

The DRH's major religions are about 3. One is Cherufism, The Second is Atheist and the last are the ones who believe in the pagan gods of prehistoric times.

The SUCSCTM'ers are Atheist, they're lifestyle has given them a grim look on life.

The Kalmarnate of the Halachimic Tribes is Cherufistic, but do not believe they are holy. They think that they were servants of the gods that were used to fight the demons. They survived but the gods and demons did not. They then created the world and the Barroc in both their and the gods image. They created the Barroc as their new masters, The Halacimic tribes long used the Cherufes as large battle creatures that were used to scare and kill the enemy. They have always been in religious conflict with the Barroccians of the Barroccian Empire.

The Engonate of the Steppes are Cherufistic, both in Barroccian Empire style as Halachimic style.

The LLS believe that nature is holy and should be respected. Cherufism has been introduced in the North by the DRH.

The Malak-Or Scham Empire are Cherufistic, however they sacrifice animals and enemies in vulcanoes and temples to the Cherufes, who always spit they're bones out with large force.

Overall, all Barroc (With the exception of the SUCSCTM'ers) are superstitious and often have skull and bone amuletts to protect them.
Hunters who have taken they're prey's skull bless them and carve inscriptions on the back of the skulls that explain they're backstory and they're honourable warriors death. Warriors often wear bone armour of powerful prey because they believe it will give them the powers and skills they had.

Current Civilzations
(Holy) Barroccian Empire: Used to be much more powerful, but lost a lot of regions to enemies and rebellions. They were attacked by Hagarnagian Barbarians from the North-West, Halachim Wyrm Tribes from the south and Engo Lindorm Archers from the North-East. They still are the face of the Barroc' Civilzation as a whole and still have the most balanced army, with reasonable men and armour and weapons. They are usually the diplomats and peacemakers of the Barroc Spacenavy. Inhabitants are called ''Barroccians'' rather then Barrocs. Zalopalae Gelek is the capital.

Democratic Republic of Hagarnag (DRH): A ''barbarian'' country as most Barroccians call it. Hagarnag was unique in the way that the Barrocs there practiced agriculture in ancient times. They conquered all of the north-western aboreal regions until they met the Barroccian Empire in the early Medieval period. They had peacefull contacts at first but when the Barroccians tried to expand, the Hagarnagians became hostile. The Barroccians should have had the advantedge because of their superior armour and weapons but were defeated because of the numbers of the Barbarians that outnumbered them and because they were not suited for the cold forests. After a few unsuccesfull invasions they decided to send missionaries to convert the tribes that the Hagarnagians had conquered. The Tribes were converted to Cherufism and allied with the Empire. The tribes then destroyed the Hagarnag internally with riots and Guerrilla attacks, the Hagarnagians were thinned out and tired when the Barroccians attacked. Hagarnag was easily conquered. Hagarnag remained under Empire flag till the Late Medieval period, 1000 years later. They then demanded independence from an already weakend Empire. The Barroccians, not wanting another threat gave them what they wanted. The Hagarnagians tried to regain they're own culture but the Cherufists in Hagarnag objected and riots broke out, later the riots became a civil war where the Cherufists fought the native Hagarnagians. The war raged till the the end of the industrial age, in which Hagarnag was the only country to develop gunpowder-based firearms. This allowed an political party to seize power and uppress the civil war. The party declared that religion was the cause of their problems and that it was forbidden from thenforth. Many Cherufists and Natives protested but were executed. At the end of the Modern Age, The Political Empire of Hagarnag prepared for an invasion on the Barroccian Empire, which just concluded a peacetreaty with Halachim. A civil war broke out however, and the Barroccians and Halachimics were alerted to the prepared invasion. With help from Barroccians and Halachim, the Hagarnagians overthrew the corrupted political party and created a democratic republic in which everyone was equal. Hagarnag is the Capital.

Why do the athiests have a grim outlook on life?
Because they used to be (and still are) genetically modified slaves and warriors, machines turned sentient and hybrids used for war and combat training. Life gets deppressing if you're one of those.

A drawing of a Wyrm, Wyrms are large snake-like creatures that live in the desert and are domesticated by the Halachim. They have poisenous saliva that can badly infect wounds. There is a larger, stronger breed og Wyrm that lives North and has two legs and no poison saliva. These are called Lindorms and are used by the Engo.
