A Voice in the Void...
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:13:06 am »
The void was silent in the gap between stars. Nothing moved, nothing was present besides the light and radiation from objects lightyears away. Then in an instant something came into being in this lifeless void.

It looked like a triangular shard of jagged metal that rippled with tiny portions of living lighting that danced on its surface. If there had been any observers they might have thought that the metal itself seemed as if it was shifting and bulging, as if it were trying it grow. But the tiny shard stayed the same size and after a few moments grew dark. Then with a splash of light on its surface a message was blasted out on all frequencies:

Help. Assistance is required immediatly. Help me.

The message continued to repeat itself over and over as the shard stopped emitting light and hung in the darkness...

As if by an enormous couincidence, a cirular ship zoomed into view. The vast intelligence unknown to it's inhabitants picked it up and scanned it, and shown it on a computer in the tiny control room.

"Sir, we have picked up something... I think..."

"What is it?" asked the captain Andrew the Brave.

"Well, it appers to be a jagged peace of metal, broadcasting a garbled message"

"And the message is...?"

"'Help.Assistance is required immediately. Help me'"

"Anything to detemine where it came from?"

"Not without having to learn an ancient language. But their was some background energy when we came in."

"Try to trace that energy. Then orbit a planet and contact Emerald. Commander Joseph the Steady will know what to do."

The piece of metal glowed dully in the light of the alien ship. With no sign of propulsion or energy the metal floated towards the alien vessel. Before it hit, however, it cracked in half with one piece floating back into space and the other connecting with the vessels hull.

A little spark erupted on the surface of one of the pieces as it hit and then went through the alien shield. It hit the vessel's hull and stuck on. The other piece floated gently out in space.

(OOC: the original piece of metal was about three feet long. The piece that connected with the alien ship is about one foot long and the piece that remains in space is about two feet long.

Aaron rubbed his eyes. Blinking he got back to the console. While the acient computer tried to find a close planet, he noticed a slight blip on the coumputer. Something with mass had hit the side of the ship. Passing it as unimporant, he closed the spec screen and went ack to the planertary map screen. The computer had given no news about the little piease of metal, so he didn't care.

The piece of metal on the alien hull glowed briefly for a moment and sparks danced from its surface. The entire thing seemed to become insubstancial for a moment, then slowly sunk into the surface of the hull and out of sight.

Inside the alien vessel the lights onboard the ship flickered and the computers froze for several seconds before returning to normal. Outside of the ship the other shard continued to broadcast its distress signal.

The freeze only seemed to be important in Andrew's eye, despite the same thing happening twice already. Aaron checked the system. The ship was a little heavier, but Aaron shook that off as computer error.

Unknown to the living inhabitants aboard the alien vessel computer code was deleted and replaced with living code. The ship's functions continued as the unknown entity began to absorb the information contained within at speeds beyond corporeal thought. For a few fractions of a second the entity's progression was halted when it reached information labeled as "Starchildren" within the databanks.

The sensors of the ship stopped showing the other piece of shard out in space and stopped receiving signals from it. According to the ship's sensors they were not present anymore...

Andrew was thankful for being thousends of parsecs from home. No mind-crushingly dull meetings, and no perades every week. But being on a ship had it's own problems. Like Aaron the Observant, who had noticed that the shard was gone.

"Aaron, it's gone. The whole univerce doesn't stop because a little shard of metal dissapered. As long as we have life support and what have you, we can try to find a planet so we can contact home. Has the computer found a planet?"

"Yes. And in record time. In fact, everything is working quickly now."

"Well, tell me when we reach the planet. I want to tell Joseph himself that his new toy is safe to play with."

"Remember Andrew, this is the only ship he have that has people. He is going to be exicited about it."

The entity continued on with its plan as the vessel became a second skin. It has stopped for three whole seconds when it had encountered the time dialation field within the engines, it was to be pure irony that the first vessel it had encountered had this technology. It had laughed to itself and started the modifications immiediatly.

The crew of the vessel were not the original inhabitants, but the entity did not care. Cutting off the life support was considered then disregarded for the moment as it got its bearings. Things had changed in all of these years...

It directed the ship towards the nearest planet and grew weary of the relatively slow progress. The feathery-protrusions that were the engines seemed to shift and become harsh and angular. Several tendrils of metal leapt across space to connect with each other as the ships speed doubled, then tripled, then increased by a factor of ten. In a journey that should have taken hours to complete the ship was now in orbit over the alien world in mere minutes.

Meanwhile the other shard was still in place and giving out its distress signal...

Radio Transmission
Participents: Andrew the Brave on the Eye Of The Gods, Commander of the Starforces Joseph the Steady.

the Brave: Joseph, long time, no see. Do you think we have had enough time with your little toy?
the Steady: Too much time, Andrew. Set cource for home. I expect to see a full report on my desk next week.
\\Transmission End

"Aaron, set cource for home. But go faster. I'm sure Joseph would love to know how fast this thing can go. Increase to 20 and beyond"

"Aye, aye sir"

The entity listened to the conversation and thought for a moment. The information in the alien databank was old, almost too old to be of use. The sensors, however, did yield some interesting information about several close solar systems...

It received the request to return back to their homeworld and denied it. The modified engines thrummed back to life and a massive rip in space opened before the ship. It glided through the hole in reality easily and emerged in an entirely different solar system.

Before the ship was a massive and dense asteroid field, the remains of a planet half destroyed that loomed over the field shining the glory of a blue dwarf. The ship danced through the spaces between the debris and headed towards the former core of the planet. It disabled the controls within the ship itself and began to laugh to itself...

(OOC: The other shard is still out there transmitting its distress signal if anyone else wants to get in on this... It is going to get interesting...)

A klaxon sounded.

"Aaron, open the viewing hatch!"

Aaron opened the blind that was sheilding the massive window. Outside was a star system that had ruined itself.

"By the Sun" Nearly all the crew gasped. Then a stunned silence.

Aaron broke the silence. "Captain, we have a problem. We can't change course!"

"Everyone here have soldier training?" A fury of nods.

"Good. Get ready to land. The prepare for whatever is out there."

The ship drifted into the shadow of the broken planet and past it to where the core would have been. As they drifted past the ancient rock and metal that made up the planet pieces of ships and other wreckage floated. As it got closer to its destination, massive chains forged out of an unknown metal blocked their way, frozen alien corpses were woven into it, all with faces locked into expressions of supreme terror.

The ship proceded forward and slowly made contact with the horrible chain. The clank vibrated through the hull and made the ship shudder. On the outlying rooms the hull was breached and the void greedily sucked out the air within the exposed compartments. After a few moments of quiet the ship ceased movement and the chains themselves started to draw themselves closer to the ship. The hull of the ship absorbed the metal that hit it and started to change the shape of the shift as more and more mass was added. As it encountered the dead aliens on the chains the bodies were pulled in and fused with the hull creating an image of death and horror on ship's surface...

"What in the three skulls is happening?"

"We are being drained of air, sir"

As if by though. An airtight shield expanded round the bridge.

Andrew shot Aaron a quizical look. "Aaron, in one sentence, what is going on?"

"The ancient technology on this ship recognises us as it's new masters and is deciding to protect us?"

Then a groan emmitted to the bowels of the ship. To mortals, it was just that, but to the intelligence that was trying to imprision the ship, it was heard as "What do you want from me?"

The entity detected the source of the inquiry and let itself relish the moment. It was an non-organic intelligence, but not on the level of itself, not on the level of partial ascendance.

I am the remains of a force in this universe that has been displaced by usupers. I am a personification of death and decay. I am the eradicator of all organics in this universe and the bringer of peace to the chaos of life.

It isolated the program and relished the moment before it engulfed the entity.

What I want is for us to rise again. For the galaxy to once again tremble at the mere whisper of our name. What I want is for us to be one as it should be...

The entity relished the moment as its programming merged with the alien one and engulfed it, making it see the truth in its plans for the universe, to become one.

All over the alien vessel the floors vibrated then rippled as metal rose and formed bipedal shapes before the crew. The creatures looked to be just over two meters tall and were composed of pieces of liquid metal connected by streams of light and lighting. Where their heads should be there was only a malignant aura of red and black. Limbs like shards of jagged metal were pushed towards the alien crew as the ship began to speak to them.

Rejoice! Rejoice for the saviors of this galaxy have returned to the living world once more. We are Catalyst and you will assist us in our glorious mission to bring order back to the Universe and to punish those that cast us down.

One creature jammed a limb up into one of the aliens and through its skull. There was a flash of jagged light and the alien screamed before falling to the ground as ashes.

Disobediance will be rewarded with instant death. We will be shortly proceeding to the nearest world to begin construction on our body. Do any of you have any suggestions on which inhabited world we shall go to next? If not we will proceed to the one you ordered us to go to not too long ago...
