DS wins Portable War?
« on: July 09, 2005, 08:29:02 pm »
Although I know PSP has a bigger screen and could possible play movies and stuff with the memeory stick, I think DS is currently winning the portable war, and possibly into the future. Especially with extra support from Nintendo for wireless play. Sony hasn't offered any of this, and its games are just a lot worse compared to ones that Nintendo has to offer.
I just want hear opinions from both DS and PSP owners out there, what do you have and do you agree with what I'm saying here? All comments welcome.
 :)

I'm on a highway to hell.

I have a DS and am a Nintendo fan....
As I live in Europe I didn't have a chance to see the PSP in action.

A PSP is 249 € ( $298,11 ) and the games are expensive too 59,99€ ( $71,82 ).....
So that makes 308,99€ ( around $370 ) for a PSP and a game....you can get a DS, 3 games and lots of accessory (or a 4th game) for that.....
I'd buy a PSP for movie and mp3 playback, but when the Play-Yan is going to be released over here (with the GBM) I'll rather get this one as it's still cheaper than the PSP....
Price:
DS: 1 - PSP:0

I don't think we have to talk about the games.....both handhelds have the potential for great games....
ATM the DS has more good games esp. in Japan and the US (I want Meteos !!!), but the real killer app for the US and Europe isn't out yet....
Same for the PSP, but there are no or just some good titles out....I think Lumines looks cool, but it surely isn't a killer app....
GTA:LCS is going to be a killer app imho and it's going to to be here soon....at Europe even at the PSP's launch....
I don't know....we don't know too much about GTA, but we know one thing: It's going to sell like crazy and it will sell hardware....
I think the "killer apps" are on par and will both sell a LOT of systems....but the DS has more good games overall.
Oh! The DS can play GBA games ! Let's not forget this one ;)
Games:
DS: 2 - PSP: 0

I don't think that the quality of either system is bad...of course there are dead pixels (on both) and there are some other problems, but after all it isn't that much of a deal.....
The PSP probably has a better screen and just better materials, but you have to pay for it....
Some people say the DS feels "cheap"....well compared to the PSP it probably does, but that doesn't make it "cheap".
Some people say the PSP feels "fragile" (really bad for a handheld imho).....well compared to the DS it probably does, as the DS can fold and protect the screens this way AND there are no moving parts inside the DS.....
After all, you get what you pay for: the DS's casing is made of your standard plastic, while the PSP's is made of some cool stuff I never heard of before ;)
Quality:
DS: 3 - PSP: 1

There's one thing that's very important for consoles these days....esp. for handhelds: Which one is "cooler" ?
I don't even have to think about this one: the PSP
First: It's made by Sony and Sony made the PS and PS2 that were "cool" too....
Second: Just look at it ! Even Nintendo fanboys have to admit that it is beautiful !
Third: The PSP has this cool gadget sex appeal ;) So both mainstream folks and all the geeks out there like it.
Coolness:
DS: 3 - PSP: 2

So everything else:
The PSP can of course play movies and mp3s...... (PSP: 3)
But the DS is going to have Nintendo Wi-Fi stuff (esp. DSPeak looks interesting)..... (DS: 4)
Battery life: The PSP has some problems with that, but I don't think it is such a big deal, but if you really play a lot while you're on the go, it might be important..... (DS: 5)
Did I forget something ? hmmm....oohhh yes the graphics :D
Well, honestly, I don't care....the PSP's graphics look fantastic of course and that's probably the reason most mainstream folks will get a PSP, but as I said, I don't care......great graphics don't make great games. (but still: PSP: 4)
DS: 5 - PSP: 4

So after all I would recommend a DS.
I didn't even think about the PSP too much, because 1. 249€ is too much, 2. it isn't even out yet over here and 3. I am a biased Nintendo fanboy and proud of it ;)

Oh yeah one thing missing, that I didn't want to include....
"Homebrew":
Well I think this reads piracy....I don't like piracy because it kills innovative games and developers. (I could still cry that some of them are gone....Looking Glass :'( ) I think it's ridiculous that some people buy a console because they can get pirated games for it  >:(
Well....I think there are emulators for both handhelds, though it's of course pretty hard to get that stuff on the DS....
The only thing I am really really interested in is Linux for PSP/DS....
The DS has far more potential because of the Touchscreen, just get some PIM software for Linux and you have a cheap PDA :D
My dream is a real distribution for the DS backed by Nintendo (it could come on a DS card and additional programs on GBA cartridges   :)), but I don't think it's going to happen :(
Linux for the PSP is cool, but not that interesting.....
Life, don't talk to me about life.

No it isn't it is around 47  €  here in denmark and we have one of the highest taxes in the world (25%).

Games:

Actually Lummines, 90% Source, Meteos 87%Source

Pretty close but Lummines seems to be better, also if the DS has to rely on GBA insted of the games made for it seems the DS doesn't has many good games.

2D graphics are old, that doesn't mean they are bad oh no I love a lot of 2D games but they have to be done right, the PSP also does 2D graphics better then the DS (mostly because the screen is better)

I have played both the PSP and DS in person (not at the game store, but in person, person for a period of time), and I have to say, portable gaming just ain't worth it.
Here's why:

No.1 The graphics ain't that great
No.2 The screens ain't that great either (PSP exception, but that doesn't make me to buy one)
No.3 The games ain't that great - I'd have to see what Nintendo has to offer for the wireless gaming like Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing DS, but otherwise, I'm not really into "Nintendogs" or Mario DS or any of the other PSP games.

And the systems' costs are similar to current console costs, and games that cost a lot too.
I'm on a highway to hell.

Amazon.de says: GTA - 60€, Metal Gear Acid - 60€, but NFSU Rivals 48€ (but 50 recommended)
I don't know....I thought it'd be close to the $=€ rule ;)

Actually Lummines, 90% Source, Meteos 87%Source

Pretty close but Lummines seems to be better, also if the DS has to rely on GBA insted of the games made for it seems the DS doesn't has many good games.
I actually want both games...but I won't buy a PSP just for Lumines....so it is not a game that makes me want to buy a PSP (that'd be a killer app imho....)

btw:
Lumines: 88 Source
Meteos: 89 Source

it all depends :D That's why I don't like reviews that much....

The only mag I personally really trust is the Famitsu:
Lumines: 7 / 8 / 7 / 8 - 30 silver [Dec 2004]
Meteos: 9 / 9 / 10 / 10 - 38 platin
But as I said: it all depends.....

It's just that I don't like most titles for the PSP. Lumines and GTA are as I said the only games I would get if I had a PSP....
For the DS I already have Wario Ware, Another Code, Electroplankton and Daigssou! Band Brothers and are planning to get Meteos, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Nintendogs and Sonic Rush. There are several games I want but probably can't afford (Castlevania DS, Animal Crossing DS (depends on the Internet stuff, as I don't have broadband), Mario Kart DS (same as AC DS) and several other titles....), so for me the DS has far better games.....

I don't think the DS relies on the GBA games....I don't have a GBA, so it's nice to play some gems I missed without paying another 100€ for a GBA SP. Those who have a GBA don't have to carry two consoles and can still play their favorite games.
I think the GBA library is just an extension for the DS library. But you are right, it is more important what games are out for the system itself....

The average PSP game in a merica is 40$ and this site says for most games 390 kr which is around that with danish tax.

Hehe...though I'm not the blind kind of fanboy...I actually like the 360 very much....I had some discussion about next-gen systems and...well....the other guy made me want to have a 360 and you make me want to have a PSP :P well....too late ;)

That's probably why I trust Famitsu ;) they like Nintendo, I do too...soooo works out :D

I don't know what that is but the PSP will have a internet browser...

Well they plan a service similar to XBOX Live (I think it is close to that) using wireless connection (w-lan router, hotspots and probably a USB-stick W-LAN access point thingy...) They even want to include VoIP....
I think they're going to release an additional Web-Pack with DSPeak (+ headset for VoIP) and probably browser and so on....
or they make a really really nice firmware update ;)

Oh that well don't know doesn't seem very appealing to me, I mean the PSP can do all that and will probably have a microphone so you can speak with others shortly.

That is my own personal theory why so many nintendo fanboys hate the PSP....

Well the DS would probably be perfect for RTS's games if it was a little more powerfull, they even change Age of Empires from a RTS to a TBS.

Of course they will but sony will also keep releasing updates.

That is my own personal theory why so many nintendo fanboys hate the PSP....

Hehe...and you know what ?
You might be right ;)

Well...I love my DS because it has some innovative games (Electroplankton is really something completely different) and it is by Nintendo ;)
But I'd get a PSP if I had the money.....

Well the DS would probably be perfect for RTS's games if it was a little more powerfull, they even change Age of Empires from a RTS to a TBS..

Yeah...it's a shame....

I own both a nintendo DS and a PSP and to tell you the truth I havent found very many good games for either so the 250$ PSP loses to the 150$ ds just becuase I had to pay less for it....... I know its the begining of the consil's life span so ill wait paitently and give my true opionion once I have great games for both

I dont think anyone can tell who won the war... OS far the DS has won the battle but nither system has a "killer app" so its impossible to tell whom won the war.

You're right....
But if you look at Japan, I think you can see where the market is going....
NintenDogs will be an absolute killer-app, but not because it appeals to hardcore gamers, but because it attracts new gamers too.....but then there's GTA.....we'll see :D exciting :D

Personally I doubt that GTA will draw that much of a crowd to the PSP.  The masses that like GTA already have it on their PS2, and will most likely not care about the protable version.  Just my opinion.
