Well to be honest, you can do more in your UFO than on foot. There will be nothing to do on an unhospitable planet besides walk around.

If this is to be added, I'll maybe use it once and think "Right, fair enough" then never use it again.
I'd rather Maxis focus on finishing the game then spending extra time on adding relatively pointless features :)

Who knows. It may already be added.

Actually Len, Will showed on the SXSW vid that you do have the tools from the UFO available to you while walking around on the ground.  So, you could stay in the UFO or you could go to the surface and still have (and least as far as we've seen) the same amount of functionality.

Ah yes good point.

Well, my attitude is for them not to spend time implementing the idea of walking around on barren inhospitable planets. Mainly because I wont use it. Making an extra feature like this now could delay the release further :P If it doesn't delay it then i'm all for it.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bistro
1. a small, modest, European-style restaurant or café.
2. a small nightclub or restaurant.

I have never heard someone talk about a bistro as a nightclub (not even remotely).

Actually, now that I think about it, it makes more sense to have your creature simply drive around in some sort of vehicle. That's probably what Maxis will do.

I have a stupid idea:
Has anyone ever read the work of Jack McDevitt? Instead of space suits, the characters encase themselves in an energy field (invisible) keeping the environment out. One could figure that a race that could destroy a planet in a day could at least figure this out.

Therefore, your being could walk about with impunity while another wild creature would explode.

Basically, lazy-ass shortcut. Like the Hologram idea.

ah, yeah, i read priscilla hutchins 1 + 2. very good books.
in the german books the energy fields were called "Flickinger-Geschirr".
in my view a very effective piece of technology for space exploration.

If people really want spacesuits that badly, why not just make a UFO in the shape of a space-suit?  :P  Ta-da, through creativity, the problem is solved.

A UFO and a space suit are different things. It's like saying you can climb a mountain by going up in a helicopter. And terraforming is a lot of trouble to go to just to go and look at a planet.

Its not like you can't just 'look' at a hostile planet in your UFO. You can get quite close from what we've seen.
There must be something wrong with me. I fail to see the interesting part of being able to walk around on a baren and dead planet.

No, nothing wrong with you (as far as I can tell <.<)
Its just that, some of us are like that.  I would consider it quite a novelty, and possibly quite fun to just run around in a rocky wasteland on a barren planet (or asteroids if possible).  No real reason, just for fun.

I'd like to be able to get my creature to eat the aliens as well.
