A Newbies Guide to creature creating...
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:55:46 pm »
Ok so this should help newbies at making creatures that don't get flamed or Ignored (I still don't see why the Zolyg are being Ignored, they're quite original)

Index
1: Design for dummies
2: God Modded Critters
3: Visualize
4: Information
5: For all that Is good and great In this Universe, No wang creatures

1: Design for dummies:

What kind of design should a creature have? Well that's really up to you, but to get the best results follow a few simple steps.

1.1) Avoid Humans...and In general humanoid creatures. Creatures like the Torpals may resemble humans although they have a few key differences. First: they're not bald and ugly, they're covered In hair. Second: they have blue skin, third: look at the design of the head. It's a Biped but It's different, and here that's good.

1.2) Try to make your creature a surviver. A 77 Legged creature with no senses and 4 butts aint gonna go anywhere. Generally creatures evolve to fit there surroundings, so If you want a creature a certain way then give It a reason to be that way.

My newest creature the Zolyg may have a lot of limbs, but It has reasons for them...well Kinda. The ViS have a reason for their current shape after all don't they?

2: God Modded Critters:

God Modding Is essentially making your creature the most powerful and best creature possible avoid this!

2.1) OK so you can make a powerful creature, but It should have reasons for It's power and should also have let downs. Our 77 legged, 4 butted creature might be able to take a swing at an enemy and kill It, but all those legs are gonna get In the way.

2.2) A good way to avoid God Modding might be with a points System, much like In the Sims, you get a certain number of bars and have to Issue them out accordingly. Maybe try the same with your creature, start with 20 points or so with 5 categories and sort them accordingly.

3: Visualize:

3.1) There Is nothing worse than designing a creature, writing a lot about It and thinking It all through before you go, "WOOPS, I don't have a picture and no one knows what my creature looks like" sometimes It's a lot harder to explain physical attributes than to draw them. All creatures should have a picture within the first page. For best results first post.

3.2) Lacking In artistic skill?: If your not the best drawer then maybe ask someone to draw a picture of your creature for you. Heck there are plenty of great artists on this very forum alone.

Need a Drawing?

4: Information:

4.1) Probably (actually this IS) the main thing that makes a creature great, Info. You might want to start with a time line of events, starting with the formation of your planet or maybe the big bang. Maybe give a short (or long If you feel) back story to your creature, or maybe Just describe the creature Itself and later on make up the past, present and future stories about them as you go along.

4.2) *yawn* boring, nobody wants to have to read a post that has all the Information on your creature that there ever has been. Split It up and dish It out In small sections. Post, get some feedback, post some more etc etc... It stops people getting extremely bored and confused.

5: For all that Is good and great In this Universe, No wang creatures

That says It all, no giant penis creatures, no giant boobs, no vagina creatures that the penis creature attacks, Just no, nobody finds that funny, 'cept for the people that post 'em.

I'll add more If I think of anything else. Now newbies can't get away with the humans *evil, demented smiley here*

You know the part that practically says people have attention spans?

Yeah, I don't have one and I wanted to get It done quickly, like I said I'll edit It when I get Inspiration. Yeah I'll add your "Amazing thread" (I was gonna reference and link to It but I got confused).

Fire Breathing seems possible.

Have an Internal Hydrogen Sack, some bones with a high iron percentage, a sphincter muscle to control the strength of fire...oh and some Inflammable, heat repellent liquid on the throat muscle. Bones click against each other, spark Ignites hydrogen and It breathes fire :)

...or so It should work, I read It somewhere else and made one or two changes.

And Yeah...you mean Furbies? I hate those, they freak me out...and no pokemon...aye.

I never said creatures couldn't breath fire, just not the ones that just happen to look like mythological flying lizards  ;)

Edit: oh, and no giant floating smilies

I want to see a flying lizard of fire breathing. Now I will have to defeat you! More dragonly than HuckBucks too. Just let me magicly summon ted the scanner

Though yeah furries suck ass and should all die. They should all become real, so we can finally kill them all.

I guess you can lay up on the dragon one because it's unfair being that people don't bash on centaurs, griffins, gargoyles, hydras, and other mythicals too.

EDIT: Nevermind. Your brain is going to explode.

You really aren't the best one to write this sort of guide, good sir.

Though neither am I, really. All my creatures faded away after about a month. And if I wrote the guide, it would be a lot meaner and would probably just say "DON'T MAKE A CREATURE".

:D I'm not saying people can't make humanoid creatures, I'm Just suggesting against It so that they don't get flamed like hell (ha that sorta came of as a pun...flames...hell...no? ah screw you all :D)

True I'm probably not the best to right a guide but I think I got the points across.

And no copyrighted characters and syndicate either. (Pokemon, Star Wars, Various Cartoons, etc...)

If you really want to have a creature similar to an existing character or creature, at least modify it somewhat.

Examples:

1. For my Naukal, I wanted something like Ripjaws from Ben 10. So I added on Kit Fisto's dredlock tenticals, more biolights, and a big venom-tipped fin.

2. The Nyctos grew out of an engorged No-Face from Spirited Away. Shaved off the hair, fixed the legs and teeth, replaced the mask with an echolocation mellon and 4 noses, made it less gooey and a symbiont.

3. My Theans were originally a race of Data's from Star Trek. Scrapped for obvious reasons. So I took some plent wings, a really long xenomorph mouth, some biolights, and the arms and legs from those spider aliens in Lost in Space and mashed them together.

Oh, and:

A furry is a humanoid creature with fur or scales, possibly taking on the traits of an animal.

No humanoids :
Too many humanoids get boring, but they're valid forms. Sorry Greevils, nobody likes you now.

No furries :
They included the fur feature for a reason, a furry is fine too. Sorry Torpals, no love here.

Make a survivor :
Designs that wouldnt survive IRL may survive in Spore, the game tries to make your designs seem 'clever'. Im certain that there will still be creatures in the actual game that should really be extinct, but the fine details in creature creation (in the forum) is just to keep ourselves distracted.

God modding :
Only really an issue if they intend to RP, and a game-overseer wouldnt let them RP if they were insanely 'over-spec'. Besides, my creature would survive better if it evolved lightsabers for hands (see above).

Pictures :
Always nice, but not necessary. Posting the description and other bits of a creature profile first, would give people a strong idea of how to draw your creature, if you asked nicely for a picture.

No wang creatures :
Aww, but... but...

All in all, the only guide really needed is a little bit of common sense. If a persons creature sucks, people are sure to flood there and humiliate themselves by flaming it to hell and back. Forums have their own little food chain too, y'know!

No Dragons
While dragons are more alien-like than say humans (though there are humanoid dragons  ::) ), they have been over done. For this reason try to avoid dragons at all costs. This is not to say you cannot have dragon features. People seem to misunderstand this and get very defensive of their precious dragons. You must remember in world cultures dragons were a composite of the 3 most deadly animals that humans encountered  from ape all the way to prehistoric human. These where the big cats, snakes and birds of prey. European dragons tended to take the attributes more of reptilian and snakelike, but still wing and the "dragons breath". The breath actually originated from the rotting breath of lions and leopards. It was only later it turned into fire. Asian dragons while more snake-like in body form, actually had many cat or even dog-like features and could look harry, but had classic bird like talons like most dragons. American dragons are the classic feathered serpents and resemble a mix of snakes, parrots and jaguars. Each a native species of the region. In short when making you alien try to avoid these exact combination of big cats, snakes and birds of prey and maybe try a different combo such as bear, crocodile and wasp. While created in the same manner as people who made up dragons, it will still be unique in that it has never seen before and thus making your drawing original, even if the creatures you are using are not.

All my creature were ignored too... But I don'y whine about it! ;)

Oh yeah...

No Earth Animals: I am sure that when Spore comes out, a flood of six year olds getting on their older relatives copies of Spore will create a flood of ponies, puppies, kittens, etc. Avoid at all costs! Dive captain, dive! Launch torpedo 5! Direct hit! All kittens have been neutralized! But seriously, no "real" animals. And that includes dinosaurs, extinct mammals, and the pigs that ruled the world.

Don't Rip off Someone Elses Stuff: Be creative for once and don't make the "Raucean," "Norpal," "Taukal," "Pexxian," or any other rip off. Someone worked long and hard on those, so do it yourself; maybe you could make the next 120 page thread! Though I doubt it.
I say NO! to all limits.
Unfortunately, I don't think we're far enough into the Civ stage to have deveoped into the 'Infinite-ghz processing' research tree yet...
