Another Code - Review
« on: June 29, 2005, 03:06:03 pm »
Another Code is out and getting pretty good reviews. So here's my pretty good review....

You play Ashley, a 13-year old who is searching for her father on a small island.
Something strange has happened here and while you are trying to find your father, you discover the secrets of the old mansion and the family that lived there.
The game is a pretty standard Point-and-Click Adventure, you walk around, find objects, use them on other objects, talk to other characters (though there is only a handful of them) and read notes or letters that reveal the secret of Ashley's father.
Although you could use the buttons to control Ashley, you'll always use the stylus.
Every single DS feature is used and some even in a very unique way.
The graphics and sound effects are nice, especially the prerendered environment and the drawn characters during dialog look beautiful.
So this should be a great game: nice story, nice use of the DS's features, nice graphics, nice characters and fresh ideas.

But....
Well first of all it is a great game in my opinion don't get me wrong, but there are two or three things that I don't like.
I am a Point-and-Click Adventure fan and have played many of them. So, I think, this game is just too easy and too short. On the other hand I read many reviews saying that it is a bit too hard and quite long. I think if you love Adventures and have played some of them, it's going to be pretty easy, but if you're new to the Genre, it's pretty hard.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like you're going to rush through it in 4 hours, but I haven't encountered any really difficult puzzles. If you think it's too hard, do what you have to do in every Adventure: talk to everybody and look at everything.
The other thing that is really getting on my nerves is that the characters are kinda stupid:
You have to reveal a family tree during the game and you as the player know how's father who is an hour before the characters get it. It's not a real gameplay problem, just annoying.
So after all, this is my favorite game at the moment and the best Adventure I have played in quite some time. It is the best Point-and-Click style Adventure for a console I know and probably the best DS game out in Germany and probably the US too.
Don't expect action, don't expect (much) blood and don't expect a boring game!
So if you want a unique, innovative gaming experience: Get this game!

Score: 9/10

!DANGER SPOILER! NOT REALLY RELATED TO THE REVIEW !
DON'T READ ON, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE SOLUTION FOR A GREAT PUZZLE

OK, I have to tell you about this puzzle as it is a great puzzle and typical of Another Code's puzzles.
There is a small, fold able (sp?) picture frame and the pictures don't make sense...
You get two hints: “Look at them the right way.” and “Maybe, I can use the reflection.”
So what do you do?
Well first I tried to do something with the stylus (didn't work at all :D), then I turned the DS upside down, looked at it from every possible angle (I think it's brilliant to use the console itself as part of the riddle) and still I couldn't get it. So after a while I got the reflections hint and got the idea:
You have to fold the DS a little bit and look at the reflection of the top screen in the bottom screen , both pictures combined make some sense.
This riddle is so brilliant in my opinion, it raised the game's score from 8.5 to 9.....

END OF SPOPILER
So, what do you think of the game ? And what do you think of my review ?

Heh, I guess the Europeans lucked out for once. ^_^

I really like Adventrue games as well, so if I ever get a DS I'll probably get ahold of this game as well.

Although for some reason it's going to be called "Trace Memory" over here...personally I like the name "Another Code" better. *shrugs* Oh well.

Sound really cool. Nintendo should make more games like this, except maybe it'll be on Zelda or something. I don't think Ashely finding her dad is going to be as intersting of a storyline.

I think it's going to be called Another Code: Trace Memory in the US...over here it's Another Code: Two Memories....

A Zelda adventure would be great. But Ashley actually is a quite interesting character (she even has some flaws...puberty (sp?) ) and the story is surprisingly good....imho at least...

We do? Oh well :D It is the first time I realised it was out in the EU first :D
