I have that story as well. I agree with Asimov, it's the best story he ever wrote.

Considering how much faster computers are progressing in comparison to MULTIVAC, perhaps entropy could be reversed before the death of the universe and the fusion of the human conciousness with the machine.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

This one's ten times better:

tl;dr: But I will later though. I've heard of the story, so that tells me there has to be something to it. I don't often get people mentioning short stories to me as must-read events.

EDIT: Well, crap. Now I know why they mentioned in such hushed tones -- it's friggin' awful!

psh, short my ass. If I can't read it all within a three minute span then I will not consider it a short story. It was a medium story :P .

I'll see if I can find a link to one of my favorite short stories. It's called Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut.

http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/hb.html

EDIT: After you read, you can notice a lot of little nuances the arthour put in. For example: the main characters only talk in "said's".

Harrison Bergeron is one of the best short stories ever. It's so true!

Anyway, "Guts" by Chuck Palahniuk it's a great horror short. Google it yourself, I don't think I can link to it.

Asimov's The Last Question (short story)
« Reply #20 on: August 06, 2007, 05:53:57 am »
I read this short story some time ago, and happened upon it again late last week while browsing the Internet.  It's a personal favorite, since it is so expansive while still being realtively short.  Asimov's own words describe it best:

Quote from: Isaac Asimov
This is by far my favorite story of all those I have written.

After all, I undertook to tell several trillion years of human history in the space of a short story and I leave it to you as to how well I succeeded. I also undertook another task, but I won't tell you what that was lest l spoil the story for you.

It is a curious fact that innumerable readers have asked me if I wrote this story. They seem never to remember the title of the story or (for sure) the author, except for the vague thought it might be me. But, of course, they never forget the story itself especially the ending. The idea seems to drown out everything -- and I'm satisfied that it should.

Read "The Last Question" here.

Let's see...

Get yelled at for necrobumping.

OR

Get yelled at for posting a new topic.

Ok I give up.  I'll just assume from now on that any possible topic has already been covered and disregard either option. ;)

Get this into your head: Posting a new topic is bad. Posting in an old one is not. Claiming that you didn't want to be shouted at for bumping a topic is not an excuse.

And this would go in the books section anyway. Which is where the original is. I think it's like best short stories or something like that.

Necroing is when you bring up an old topic without contributing anything significant to it, it's excusable when you bring something to the topic that hasn't already been discussed, and can be discussed quite well. So basically you can bump the old topic as long as you're contributing enough to it for the bump to be justified.

Franz Kafka - The Judgement

This is the one work Franz Kafka considered to be his greatest. Some of you may be more familiar with "The Metamorphoses," but Kafka considered that one a failure. (He was dissatisfied with the ending). He also wrote "The Judgement" in one night.

A great story on the future of the US economy after robots take over. Well written and interesting. If you work retail, it's a horror story(but with a happy ending!)

That was good, but the writing wasn't that great, and the ideas were unoriginal (Ever heard of the Venus Project?). There wasn't even that much of a story to speak of. The author mostly just threw ideas at you. :P
