Probably too soon, but I'm curious. People from London or England or the UK or whatever, how do you feel about arming your police officers? Or even having them pair off and giving one a gun? A bunch of tasers? Some kind of armor-penetrating crossbow? I dunno, work with me here. I feel like that police officer didn't need to die.

The others on the bridge... hard to stop a speeding car even if you're in the right place and happen to also have a loaded firearm and the wits to use it well.

Guy could've killed more than three people if he'd had a gun. :^)

Armed responses should be left to specialists. Arming every beat cop leads to really unnecessary escalation and an increase in black-market firearms. It avoids situations like the US has, too: If you're surrounded by six men with automatic rifles you can't complain that it's "unfair" if you do something stupid and get shot. Not that it stopped the english from rioting that time.
Not a winner anymore.

Yeah that was a theme in work yesterday - our lack of gun culture probably saved a lot of people.

/lurk is right, I'm fine with our regular officers being unarmed. I'd be a lot more tense every time I saw police talking to some idiot if I thought either party could pull a gun at any point. I had police at the top of my road last week, talking to somebody in a car. I was fine walking past them and there were people filming what was going on.

Whenever I go to London, it is always odd to see officers with MP5s around Buckingham Palace and one time just out on the street. Considering there are actual soldiers with actual rifles round by the gates.

Not in the UK but feel the same - armed police are a no-no. Any lives that may have been saved (dubious) by armed police in that particular conflict would be hugely offset by the massive number of unnecessary deaths during day-to-day police work.
No way dude, you're trolling me.

And what of tasers? Mace? Or some kind of "deadly" weapon that isn't a gun that can be used to circumvent body armor (which can block tasers) or a mask (which can block mace) or other kinds of defense? What's the normal compliment one of these unarmed cops goes on their beat with?

There's got to be a way to give these guys some sort of ranged defensive capability without handing them a firearm.

I mean, why not? I know it sounds silly, but I wasn't exactly kidding with some sort of high-tension crossbow-like device. It would give you the power to put something through body armor (blades behave differently than bullets) while still allowing you to stay away from the absolute deadly force of a handgun or something equivalent.

It's a lot more satisfying to just beat the **** out of the crims with a baton though.

These guys aren't working in Detroit, Pat. They're not dealing with body-armoured shotgun wielding supercriminals. When **** does get real we don't expect them to do something stupid and try and be heroes - we expect them to call for backup.
Not a winner anymore.

yeah what lurk said. I'm not sure how often regular police here have run-ins with criminals wearing body armor, and if they did, there are more specialized branches of the police they call in
