According to this Wikipedia page, this is a version of Sim City 3000.

And here is the official web site. If you can read Japanese, let us know what this is all about!

I was intending to get Sim City 4 for the PC sometime as I haven't played one before but the portability of this is attractive, it's not like I have anything to compare it to even if it isn't the latest version

There is a Sim City 2000 for GBA, but I heard it was even more stripped down than the SNES version. This one (from appearances alone) looks more faithful to the original PC 3000.

Looks cool... SimCity 3000 always had the best music...

I will never understand why they seem to be releasing a Japanese version of this first... was SimCity big in Japan?

Man, if I knew Japanese, I would so import this.

Why Japan is getting this, I'm not sure. I think I heard somewhere that strategy/sim are more popular on the handhelds in Japan than elsewhere.

The interactivity of the disasters reminds me of a version of SimCity 2000 on the N64. (Never made it here because it used the N64DD [Disk Drive]). And like that version, this version of SC3K seems to be aimed at a mostly Japanese audience, which means we may not see it in a local form without it being brought more back to it's roots, or at all.

Oh, and Pat, I agree with you that SC3K had the best music.

There actually is an entire group of Maxis-licensed stuff in Japan that never sees the US.

Just to name a few:
SimTower for GBA
SimCity for N64
The Sims for Wii.

Actually, the Sim Tower (well, more accurately, a cross between Sim Tower ("Tower" in Japan) and Yoot Tower ("Tower 2" in Japan)) did come here. It's under the name of The Tower SP.
