Nvidia's New GPU
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:16:53 pm »
It seems that Nvidia has released the new 7800.

Read all about it here:http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-20525-2185-x-x-x&tag=gs_hp_flashtop_read

That's a great card, but damn is it expensive! You'll get your money's worth, but at $600, that's one heck of a hit to most gamers' wallets. I'll be getting one, and I'll stay with it for as long as possible. But with those specs and performace readings, it looks like it'll be pure gaming bliss.

Meh, it's not that much faster than other cards. I'll stay with my Radeon 9800 pro for now.

Yes, but when you're running on an old Nvidia 5200 like myself, the prospect of buying a new card and being set for a good amount of time is awesome. My computer won't play any of the new games, and the console versions just aren't the same. Sign me up for a 7800 right now!

I would still go for a cheaper card.  A Radeon X800 XT is half that price right now, and will be a good card for years to come.  In my opinion its never a good idea to buy brand new stuff.  It has not been tested and is way to expensive.  Get slightly older stuff, which is almost as powerful, but much less expensive.  In the tech world you pay for having things now.

Another thing to be wary of is PCI express. It might be a lot faster than AGP, but no programs can use it currently, and the cards that utilize it are barely faster than AGP. It's not worth it to upgrade to it yet if you still have an 8x AGP slot on your current motherboard.
