The Most important Creature Question EVER!!!!!
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:59:08 am »
Okay, so, I dont know if anybody knows this, but, do I HAVE to give an animal legs?

I want to make a giant bouncing ball, with a mouth...thats it...But will it not move unless I have legs?

According to Will Wright you can make slug-like creatures. I don't know about other types of movement without legs.

You can probably loop hole that. Just give your creature one leg so that it hops around. Then make the leg so small that you can't see it. TA-DA! You will have a bouncing ball creature. ;D

what i'm making is a katamari when i get the game :/
namco might sue somebody, but what the heck.

yep, a tiny leg would solve your problem, unless you wanted it to roll, that takes tiny feet all over your creature, profile view.

Hmmm, just thinking here.... but it occurs to me that levitating creatures would be kinda cool. The bouncing ball idea made me think about floating eyes from some RPG games and old-school D&D adventures (beholders, I believe they were called). They don't bounce though, they just float around like a big eyeball, and some of them have stalks protruding from their "bodies" that have eyes at the ends of them too. Of course, in those other games, the eyes would cast spells and so forth, which doesn't really apply in Spore. But still, 'floating' (and not necessarily 'flying') creatures strikes me as something that might make its way into an expansion.

I know that Spore isn't exactly a realistic game but... I just don't see levitation fitting in there. Even if it doesn't end up in the initial game I can guarantee that an expansion will add in flying creatures. Afterall, how many animals levitate?

Give your creature a hydrogen-filled gas bladder. Levitation complete.

As far as we know, the Slug you will controll, when you crawl out of the primordial soup, has no legs...otherwise it wouldn't be a slug.
I can remember, that the only part, the slug has, is a mouth, not more...

---> Creatures without legs are doable, you can even make a creature without a mouth, WW said.
There is, of course, a difference between having a laugh with someone, and having a laugh at their expense

It may well be possible to have a legless creature. But the game may also not have much room for such a creature to survive. That's the thing, you can come up with a cool design, but it has to be able to survive in the wild as well.

As for levitation, I doubt that will be possible, beyond flying creatures. Maybe flying creatures will be able to hover in place though?
