It's by M. Night Shamaramallamadingdong. (I don't know how to spell his name, so that'll do for now). So... there is a 65% chance that it'll be utter crap... especially since the rumor is that Aang is gonna be white/Caucasian (Dragonball Evolution-syndrome).

Rumor was a while ago that the actor playing Aang in the movie was going to be Caucasian/White. That may have changed or could have just been a rumor, but my 65% number stands (in my opinion) just from his track record. I just hope the writers respect the lore.

In my opinion the series kinda dragged on for a while. Of course a lot of other shows do that, but avatar seemed to take forever. >_> Maybe it was just the reruns that came on everyday of the exact same episode for three weeks straight before playing a another rerun for the same amount of time. I say if you can stand though the first chapter(Water) then it gets better from there. Especially the finale, that was awesome.

This worries me. There are only 61 episodes, so if it has a good deal of filler then what can there be for actual content?

Technically, since Asians get classed in with Caucasian, yes. Still, his features were more in line with portions of Asia, especially Chinese and Tibetan. It would not be a major stretch to make him "white" but it is kind of off-putting for fans of the series. I doubt very many of the kid fan-base would care, but Avatar had pretty broad appeal considering it's deep story. Towards the end you almost couldn't tell it was a children's show, what with the Blood Bending episode(s), darker themes, and romantic sub-plots.
Heck, the story and the world were pulled off together nicely and while parts of it did drag, especially in parts of Water and the first half of Earth. Still in the end, Toph made up for Earth being a little slow. I'm not usually one for tsunderes, but Toph is the West's take on one and she kicks arse.
DnD: Since most of that will probably be Greek to you, let me say this. I highly recommend it. For a Nickelodeon show it isn't overly childish, the voice acting is very good (most of the time), it's a wonderfully crafted world with depth, the characters are well crafted, and the fighting styles are based on real fighting styles. A lot of care was taken to make the fighting believable, even in a fantastic setting like this. It's light-hearted most of the time, but it really is just an all around good show to kill time with.

I could care less whether or not it was on Nick, if it's anime it's anime. I saw the first episode or two at some point way back, but never really followed through. As far as believability goes, we're talking about a show where a thousand year old pact turns little kids into elemental warriors so I really don't think it makes too much relevance. What I worry about is the steaming pile of filler. Where it only takes up 61 shows, any amount of filler makes a difference.
