Jackson is back.  New Line is gone.

The only problem I see is, there will never be a complete DVD boxed set.  I can live with that.

Oh, I don't know. Ray Harrihausen did a bunch of movies for various film companies, and I've seen his movies in boxed sets. Give it thirty or fourty years, and I'm pretty sure you'll get your boxed set.

Well, another, and in my opinion far superior, director has presented himself as a possibility for directing "The Hobbit". Obviously, a lot of details would need to be worked out, but personally I would love to see Sam Raimi direct "The Hobbit".

Raimi?

Lets look at his resume':

Some classic, though extremely cheesy, horror films.
A western.
A corny sports drama.
Some Thrillers.
Spiderman.

I see no trace of any epic fantasy.

Whereas Jackson has proven himself up to the job by making a massive sucess out of Lord of the Rings, which is set in the same world and involves several of the same characters as LoTR.

My money is on Jackson.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Raimi hasn't done anything good bar Spiderman (and even then...), and certainly doesn't look a better candidate than Jackson.

I'm waiting for the rights to transfer back to Zaentz so that Jackson can do it.

Seeing as the movies Jackson did before LOTR were just as gory as those Sam Raimi's were, featured equally weird and inspired camerawork, and also had a really twisted sense of humour, I understand how the parallels are drawn.

I for one would find a "solid" director. As good as Raimi is, it might prove too much, or he will make it too much. I always liked the Hobbit more than LOTR for it's smaller and cosier setting.

Oh, I don't know. He's done a number of good Hercules and Xena episodes. Though admittedly, most of his work has been in horror. The grudge, Boogeyman, Darkman, Evil deads, Timecop, and acted in a number of other movies: Hudsucker Proxy, The shining, spies like us, etc.

Huh. Go figure. Looks like New Line Cinema has worked through its legal problems, and Peter Jackson might be back on board for directing the Hobbit.

I hope they start production on the hobbit soon, it would be nice to see it in mid-late 2009

I think that "The Hobbit" was much funnier to read than Lord of the Rings, so i can't wait for the movie  ;)
But it does sound a bit strange that they will make 2 movies out of it? Unless it's going to be part 1 and 2.... Which i don't really think the book is long enough to be split halfway

Confirmation.  Peter Jackson will produce two Hobbit movies, set to be released in 2009/10

I'm still upset they've decided to split it into two, the book was nowhere near long enough to fill two movies, it seem like nothing but an attempt to milk it further.  That aside, I am really looking forward to seeing it.

Hurrah!

Perhaps they'll be padding them out with stuff from The Silmarillion. You couldn't make a coherent film out of that, so it would make sense to incorporate what they can.
