I played Civ all the time after my mouse broke on my Amiga, it was about the only game I could play! Just as well it was my favourite game, then.  ;D

I've restarted playing civ 3 and I'm enjoying it immensely.  The first Civ was one of my very first real PC games (after Monkey Island and Loom) and I have many fond memories of playing it on our MacTV until one of my parents ordered me off to do homework.  Like Steve said, it's a game you can just keep on playing.  Not only that, but Civ 2 was a game I could play feverishly for weeks on end, not play for 6 months, rediscover and play for weeks on end.  Civ 2 is the best but Civ 3 has enough new and interesting stuff in it that I enjoy it.  My very first civ game was back in about 95 and I built my capitol (moscow) in the middle of the mountains because my brother said they were highly defensive.  I don't think it grew past 7 people in the entire game.  ah...youth.  -leeman

I've restarted playing civ 3 and I'm enjoying it immensely.

If you want you can join me and my friends sometime, we play almost every night that we're all online. I have my AIM listed, so yep. Anybody else who wants to play can as well. We'd love to Mountie and Jag rush you... I mean... cooperatively trade with you...  ;D

The original Civ pretty good, but I'd reccomend CivNet, you can play on a LAN and it's 10 times faster (seriously) than Civ 3.

You can always join a DGame for civilization III too... ;D

But did they mean the series of civilization or the new CIV that's coming out in 6 months?...

PC Games - Interview with Senior Producer Barry Caudill
http://pc.ign.com/articles/614/614551p1.html

Some of the quotes -
"We also tweaked Civilization 3's luxury slider and turned it into a culture slider. Raising the culture level makes people happier and helps produce more culture for your entire Civ"

"In Civilization 4, the AI will have to respect your borders or declare war but you will be able to negotiate Open Borders to allow travel"

"Some of the new resources, like marble, help to increase wonder production"

"The first Civilization to discover a technology attached to the founding of a religion will establish a holy city for that religion and it will begin to spread, although slowly. To speed up the process, you can create missionaries and send them out to try to convert other cities"

And here, you can download the game for free (and it's legal)  :)

Abandonware is not legal.

True, but nobody does anything about it, lots of times because there's no company to sue.

Legal was the wrong word to use there.  I should have said, most likely, you're not going to go to jail for it, nor is any company going to sue you.  To keep things on the up and up, I've removed the link.

Open source, on the other hand, is totally legal, so here's a link to freeciv:

http://www.freeciv.org

It has a lot of different play types and is pretty similar to Civ.

Man are you lucky if you've never played Civ! Wish I could discover it anew :)

www.civfanatics.com

www.apolyton.com

Anyway, this are two great Civilization sites. You can buy Civ really cheap these days and with Civilization 4 coming out around X-mas this year you've also something to look forward to.

Here they're gathering all Civ 4 related info: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/info/

If you want to buy a Civilization game now I would try and get Civilization III Complete. Its the basic game with both X-packs a great value for the money and the most polished version of Civ you can get atm.

Oh and say goodbye to your friends and loved ones before you start playing, you might not see them for a while :D

And while you're there, join the Civ3 demogame (saw "dgame" mentioned in the thread earlier). It's an interactive single player game where you discuss and vote on everything. A new "term" is about to start, so if you ever wanted to be one of the Civ3 advisors, now's your chance to nominate yourself in one of the nomination threads!

(do a careful search in other forums there, and you'll see what my nick is on that site).
