DS recommendations...
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:08:28 pm »
Hey guys, I'm a DS player and have Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, Mario and Luigi lost in time, Warioware Touched, Pac-Pix, animal crossing DS and New Super Mario bros. Played them all now, and am looking to expand my collection. So what would you guys recommend?

Oh boy! Where do I start?

Meteos is a must-have. It is a great, unique game, and even if you don't enjoy puzzle games, you will enjoy this. It can get very crazy fun!

Kirby Canvas Curse can be fun to pick up too. I don't think it is quite as good as everyone else says it is, but it makes great use of the DS touch screen, and is just fun to play.

Looking ahead...

Yoshi's Island 2- Coming in November. Looks like the same great action of the original.

Final Fantasy III- Also in November. What more must I say?

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass- Probably coming in 2007. Looks like great 2D/3D hybrid Zelda game with new touch screen controls that, from what I can tell, work great.

Diddy Kong Racing- Coming in 2007. A re-make of the original Rare game on the N64, Rare is bringing Diddy Kong back with new tracks, characters, and...Online! I am really looking forward to this one!

I haven't played this one yet, but Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 looks very good, and has gotten some great reviews. It also has an online component, where you can download and upload custom-made courses from the course editor. I'm looking to pick this one up soon.

I could name a few others, but these are the best to look out for.

Everyone loves Nintendogs you might as well give it a look in. Also Animal Crossing Wild World Although one of the best parts of that game is playing with other people and its hard to find people around.

Ouedan or Elite Beat Agents. Ouendan is an import-only title but it's outstanding. The rhythm game to end all rhythm games and hysterical. Elite Beat Agents is basically the same concept as Ouendan, only done for an American audience. It's in English and features English songs. So having both is definitely going to be worth it.

Phoenix Wright is awesome but sadly, along with another brilliant title Trauma Center, hard to find. If you see either one, grab them immediately. In Phoenix Wright, you're a young lawyer trying to prove the innocence of your clients by coercing admissions of guilt from people, while using evidence in a timely manner to legitimize your claims. In Trauma Center, you're a surgeon trying to learn the ropes and perform various surgical procedures on patients using a variety of real tools. Later on, the game grows frantic and very difficult, but it is easily one of the more challenging, frustrating, and yet rewarding experiences on the DS.

Metroid Prime Hunters is an amazing FPS game for the DS, but only if you have a stylus that's either a little stouter than the standard DS one or if you have something that's meant to cut down on cramps in your hand from prolonged usage of a stylus. [I use ComfortStylus myself.] Believe me, you'll need it. Nothing will give you cramps in your hand like MPH will. The single-players is decent but relatively lackluster, but the online multiplayer is really excellent when you happen to get a small group of good players together.

Tetris DS: Do I have to explain this? Tetris is the most addictive videogame ever invented, and the DS version adds several new modes that are well worth playing and, in a couple of cases, rival the original game. Plus, multiplayer is a blast.

My copy of Rocket Slime arrived today, and yes, it is very good. However, it is really a GBA title and I'm surprised Steve didn't mention this as it's pretty obvious when you play it that it was originally intended for the GBA. Nothing wrong with that, but it is worth noting.

Me too...after hearing Steve's review on the game, I have become interested in this game, and it looks pretty nice.

Is the touch screen implemented at all, or is it all just classic controls?

So far it's classic controls, which isn't a problem.

I actually played Starfox. However, I did not have the pleasure of playing the whole game, just multiplayer.

From what I played, the controls are rather intuitive, though they take a minute getting used to. You basically steer with the touchpad and fire with anything. A few buttons on the side let you loop halfway or loop fully. There is also a bomb which you can drag onto the screen anywhere you want it. And of course there's a speed boost, forgot how to do that though.

What was wrong with the single player?
