If you made an MMO, what would it be like?
« on: June 09, 2005, 11:46:21 am »
I for one am fed up with the same old, same old MMORPGs. For some reason people seem to think that they are the only way to go about htings due to their nature, but personally I would like an MMOFPS.

I idea for a theme is a sci-fi wild west, bit like wild wild west in reverse. You would travel planets, each with a variety of locations, albeit with some wild-west feel going through them, no matter how extreme. Players could choose from a number of species such as human, robot, and talking dog ;), and rather than having hack n' slash, I would have all-out gunfights that come not down to who has the magic ring or best weapons (well, partly that), but who can think faster, and shoot better, under fire. There would not be classes, as you can only fire a gun so many ways, but there would be occupations such as prospector, out fighting monsters and rivals looking for starship fuels, bounty hunters, hired guns, and the such, as well as things like sheriff or lone ranger (simply out for a fight and the occasional job.) And since it would be a western-style setting, instead of leveling up, you would increase in the reputation ranks. This does not directly affect how well you fight, aside from opening up new weapons, but it would also open up new jobs and missions, keeping things interesting. Of course, the higher you where, the more money you bag to lose if you get injured. And bounty hunters wouldl make you their prime targets.

There would probably be vehicle combat, and the ability to get your own ship for travelling and you could even join a crew.

Basically, I would like to see something less about questing and whatever special equipment and that sorts but rather a fst-paced shooter that would make those guys who play rpgs all day in their mum's basement with large glasses and well-cleaned underwear explode with excitment.

Oh, and it would be free like guild wars  ;D

You like MMOs that are based more on the persons actual skill vs how many lvls that person has. But you do like the idea of the person having to earn the ring and or wepond. Thats a cool idea. But I would consider just playing a multiplayer FPS instead of trying to play it like an MMO

The Wild West idea is very cool !
I want Capture-the-Chicken from Wanted!HL LOL coolest ctf ever :D

The only thing I want to see in MMORPGs is RPG and not that: "Yo bro, whazzuuuup ?!?" stuff ;D
I used to play on an Ultima Oline RPG-Shard and it was GREAT, but I don't think it works that well with WoW or even GuildWars....

bwl2 is right about the Whazzzzup part....

Capture-the-Chicken is the ctf mode in Wanted!HL, a HL mod....
Each team has a chicken and they have to steal the enemy chicken....
The graphics are horrible, but the maps are quite nice and it is just soooo funny running around "I got the chicken! I got the chicken!" and the chicken is like "bockbockbogooooock" (well you know making chicken sounds ;) )
You can even "hide" the chicken somewhere and the enemy has to follow the sound it makes :D

Overall this is just pure multiplayer fun and I want this one in a Wild-West themed MMOFPS ;D

The technolgy is nowhere near there yet, but I want a massive driving game.

You can be police and try to enforce the law (need for speed), you can be a truck driver (Hard Truck, 18 wheels of steel), you can be a contraband runner (moonshine, Coors east of the mississippi, drugs, etc...), a taxi driver, whatever. There would be race tracks, demolision debris, long range driving. with 'servers' being cities interconnected with highways.

Inner cities would be heavily patrolled while the long highways would be more of Mad Max environment. The 'arming' of cars would be limited, but allow out on the highways.

There was a game call motor-city-online but it didn't work out real well. The needs for traffic would all but kill the bandwidth for the above idea... but it would be cool...

Massive space combat.

It would be a third person or first person game with big starships.  It would require people to work in teams.  The starships would have bridges, corridors, shuttle bays, engineering sections, etc...  You would navigate these to do different things in combat.   Go to a turret to man it for attack/defence.  Go the the bridge to control where the ship goes.  Go the the shuttle bay to take a fighter out.  Go to engineering to repair stuff.  There would have to be a comand structure built in so that everyone would know what to do and who was in charge.  Ships would be dynamically destroyable.  Fire an ion cannon at a ship and eventually it would penetrate, but only in the spot where the ion cannon was fired.  You could call hull breaches where people are sucked out into space.  If the ion cannon continued to fire it would eventaully go out the other side.  You could have marine shuttles that when to the enimies ships, latched on and cut trough the hull to let the maries onboard to try and take over.  These could range from simple one on one ship battles to masive armadas.  To destroy a ship you would have to destroy its core, which would also be where everyone on that ship would respawn after they were killed.

Thats the basics of the combat.  But there could also be planets where you could visit and guilds and other such MMO space stuff.  Maybe planet based combat as well.  Orbatal bonbardment would be fantastic.  A lot of the ideas have to be worked out, but thinking of a game like this gets me very excited.

Awesome ideas from all of you.
To Legodragonxp, there is a game kind of like that. The guys who made GTA apparently made it; it's called All Points Bulletin. You play as either a cop or a criminal. Each side has ranks you can increase as you do what you do, which is either stop the criminals or evade the cops to steal stuff.
I don't know many details, but it sounds pretty sweet. And it is an MMOG.
And of course, don't forget about Auto Assault. I'm totally getting that one.

Zaphod's idea sounds like it could be a really sweet mod for Unreal Tournament. Too bad I know nothing about that...

Indum's idea for a futuristic wild west styled MMOFPS sounds good too. While I hate most western movies, I do like games based around them (like Samurai Western. Don't have it, but I will soon.)

I won't go into tremendous length here, but obviously a big thing with me is a nice MMORTS. Of course, I'd have to design it myself to get everything I want out of it. That's the big deal.
But besides that, I'm sick and tired of the same combat in MMORPGs lately. The "interlock combat" system is driving me out of my damn skull.
You click on an enemy and then your guy runs over and fights with it until one of you dies. Sure, you can use some crappy skill to help you out even more, but who cares? I'm still sitting here watching a fight that I have little control over.
I recently played the open beta for Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst. While the game does a crapload of things wrong, it did one thing pretty well: no interlock combat.
I have more control over the rate my character shoots or swings his sword. I just wish they'd get rid of the targetter and let you hit multiple targets at once with wide swings.
Different weapons would have different maximum combos. This guy got Vernon's Staff? Wow, it's strong and it can hit up to three times. But wait, that guy got Vernon's Staff customized and it hits up to four times.
Crap like that. I don't know who would have that kind of conversation, but whatever.

The way I see it, there should be a few different combos for three directions of attack: strike, lash, and thrust. Rather than "Swing... swing... swing." I could do crazier (and less evenly timed) attack combinations. Loosen up the combat, because it's stiff as hell.
Of course, this isn't just for PSOBB ideas. I know they won't change the game, since they obviously have no intention of doing so after like fifty rehashes of the same crap (and without any improvements).

I'm not saying I want an online fighting game or anything. I just want to be able walk up to a target and actually utilize some of my own skill, and make me use some brains while I fight. "Take another swing, or roll backward?"
And yeah, of course you'd need a bunch of different dodge moves too.
Any MMORPG that gets rid of the interlock combat system is god to me. Your graphics can be as pretty as you want, your spells and skills can be as flashy as who cares, but I really insist on more freedom during combat.
I mean, come on. Imagine going up to a monster that's a few levels higher than you and scoring several good combos in a row and actually taking it down?
Of course, if this was commonplace, nobody would care... eh.

I like Zaphods ideas, and Borogove's point. MMO's take too long, and, no matter how much balancing, favor players who play for 18 hrs per day...
A great one for me would be something like Unreal Tournament in space, with a persistent world that functioned something like the Escape Velocity series. hehe, one can dream...

Yah, I just say your post over in Everything Else.  I think the main sticking point is the engine.  I think it would need something  totally new that current standard computers could not handle.  It would have basic properties programed into all of the materials to determine how they would react to different expositions and weapons.  This would be dumbed down a lot from real world physics, but I still think todays computers could not handle it in a completely dynamic fasion.  Maybe we could get something with just destroyable sections (engines, turrets, bridge, etc...) for now.  It would be a great MUD too.  I think you would need the ability to have a ton of people playing at once.  Several hundred I am thinking.  The chaos would be fantastic.

I think a shadowrun MMO would be really cool. The idea of using magic, melee weapons, guns and hacking skills just seems nice 'n' diverse to me. Being a mercenary and attacking one corporation for the sake of another, and hacking an enemies' implants while in the middle of a firefight would sure add a lot of variety to a genre with so much repetition. Each player really could be truly unique, I think. Of course, I also think that if this were to be taken seriously, developers would really have to flesh out the world... a lot. There'd have to be a full city. For a game with a cyber-punk feel, I'd like to see bars, sewers, hidden doors and alleyways... a location as close in complexity to the real world (or a future world) as possible. A static world wouldn't work... at least the way I'd like to play it. ;D

I don't know, it's kind of an idea I've thought of only recently, so I don't have it nearly as fleshed out as some of my other game concepts. I'll just have to be satisfied with what's in my head already, at least until I can sit down and really think it through. :P

For me, the only MMO ive enjoyed so far for more then 2 months (after beta) has been Planetside, COH, and Ragnaok Online (before and after free peroid)

I did realy enjoy Horizons:Empire of Istaria, for the chance to play dragons of course, but they totaly screwed up the way we could play them.

I was looking forward to Tabulsa Rasta before they changed it, now it just looks like a copy of Planetside.

The one game I am REALY looking foward to is Trials of Ascension (http://www.shadowpool.com/index.php), beacause you can play as a dragon, but unlike Horizons, it looks like they have done it right.

If I could make an MMORPG, I would try and incorperate only mythological creatures, and no humans. Humans have been used as a "basis" for almost all MMO's and I would like to see an MMO that takes the myths and ledgens from many cultures in one MMO.
We create reality, reality does not create us. Thus is the question, if we stop beleving in reality, then what are our limitations on pursuing our dreams?

My friend Zack had an interesting idea for an MMORPG.  Pretty much you would start off as just a person with no skills, powers, equipment and have to find areas where other players had congregated and all the content would be player designed.  Mods would be there to introduce aspects slowly into the game like, "I hear that if you collect enough material and practice you could make something called a 'spear.'"  There would be npc creatures like wolves and bears that you'd have to team up with people to kill by hurling rocks and stuff until better weapons were built.  I was hesitant because it seems that abuse could run rampant but he countered that that would create the conflict.  Instead of fighting npc villains, you'd have to join up against obnoxious power gamers who are trying to break the game and mods could create quests to clear out a bad tribe of players.  The game would just keep running and be slowly built up by players, with technology being slowly dropped in by Mods.  The potential for exploration and discovery would be cool but I'm not sure how feasible it would be.  Thoughts? -leeman

Sounds kind of like Second Life, which is basically a user created MMO chat room.  There are games and stuff, but most of it is just people hanging out and having a good time.

Try out Planetside. You, for the most part, can pick up the basic skills you want to use throughout the game in the first hour. Once you find a group of friends or join an organization there's always action somewhere. Its actually an MMOFPS. I've had great fun planning and executing the raid and take over of an enemy base. There's tons of vehicles to pilot and gun for, many of which you don't need any skill or aquired ability to be able to gun for.

Back before I heard of Maplestory, I thought my idea of a massively-multiplayer sidescrolling action-rpg was original.

Something like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on a gigantic scale, with multiple players, several playable races and special abilities, three worlds, cartoonish fantasy feel.
If only my programming knowledge extended into the online scale. And if only I had the patience for such a thing.
Though I do have the world pretty well planned out.
I'm ruler of this moon, boy.
So if you move, I shoots.
