.kkreiger is amazing!
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:20:56 am »
It's seriously unbelievable, I'm still in shock!

http://kk.kema.at/files/kkrieger-beta.zip (96KB)

I wont say what it is exactly, or it would spoil the amazing-ness :P well somewhat anyway..

And no, this isnt shameless advertising or some attempt at spreading a virus  ;)

I ran into that invisible wall thing on my first try. You're actually stuck on a door. It's a Beta version, and they say it does have some collision detection problems..

That is really impressive. So it's in beta first or second ?

Yeah, that picture 762 posted was 1011 KB, compared to 96KB for the entire game.

It is pretty amazing considering it's size, but that doesn't mean that it is more fun to play.

basically, when the game loads, everything is being created.

and Flisch, that question leads me to believe that you don't know about spore, for shame!  :-\

I found it fun exploring the environment, and wondering how the hell they fit it all into 96KB. You have to truly understand file-size to be amazed by it. It wasnt meant to be a fun game, but an awe-inspiring proof-of-concept to show you that a very graphical 15min game, with hi-res, bump-mapped texures, fairly detailed environments, and doom 3-like lighting can fit into just 96KB or 96,000 bytes of data, which is 768,000 characters (bits) of data. Compare that to Unreal Tournament 2004, which is 5.2GB, or 44,700,000,000 characters. Even Doom 1 or Wolfenstein were much larger than this game. NES cartridges were about 256-512KBs!

even so, I still wonder how they fit the engine, the music, the textures, the sounds effects, and the models into that tiny file

Spore doesn't have any content. That's what procedural generation means. They take files and expand them into content. Spore will be big because the program itself is big. The Spore program won't be compressed like this, but the content files will.

Celdur, you have to understand how detailed it really is for 96k. This game can fit on to a floppy 15 times! Compare that to a NES game which would only fit twice if it were a 512k cartridge. Even if this game is fully procedurally genreated, I still cant understand how it's all that plus a great graphics engine, music and (rather simplistic) sound effects. I'd say Spores engine alone would be at least 50MB.

.

No. Spore is not compressed. The content for Spore is, but not the game itself.

.kkrieger is not really compressed either, it's all algorithms that take advantage of hardware capabilities, which is why you can't play it on older computers. Good to know that the same kinds of people who made .kkrieger are the ones who have been working on Spore since the beginning.

Probably 100 maybe 200MB if done by this team..

I would still be amazed at this if it only took 2min to complete. And it is a finished level, did you get to the elevator?

It would be more like 2-3 megabytes, if using the same compression but with a full game.

I knew I was being generous.. but 2-3MB for a game like spore? You think? That's insane..

I guess they would have to use MODs for music though, and not have many sonud effects..

From my understanding (which I might add, is fairly solid), the game does not have any actual pictures, textures, .bmps, or anything like that. The textures are procedurally generated using algorithms, my guess would be via simply fractals. Chances are the animations are created using algorithms. One algorithm plus a few parameters, maybe the starting polygons, and you have a 15-frame animation.

Spore's procedural generation is much more difficult, however, as it deals with a lot more variables. These models and algorithms are made with the basic concept in mind, while Spore and its parameters can be anything. This makes Spore the more technically superior, and a larger file size is to be expected.
