Building other things?
« on: March 18, 2005, 01:32:10 pm »
Hey guys, i'm new to the forums and was wondering a question. Do you think you'll be able to build different things, like lets say chairs, bins or anything else they might use. As most of the pictures i've seen have symbols at the side. Like the pic where he's building a building, it has a window and door icon at the left hand side,  is this so that it knows whats a window and which is a door? I really do hope you can build ANYTHING that your little (or big) creatures will adapt too. You could make playgrounds and park benches or just anything, even plants maybe. Anyway i was just wondering if it anyone knows that you can.

Thanks, Chris

Well, we clearly saw that you could make your buildings look like anything. I'm sure you can make it LOOK like a playground even if it ISN'T. However, the only small-scale stuff we saw was in tribe mode, when he was buying spears and drums and such. I don't know if that's stuff that can be customized: he didn't imply it could be.

I don't think you'll be able to create 'a chair to put in a building', but you could 'reshape a building to include a chair'.

But do you think that you might be able to build anything, not in building mode, but in a sandbox mode, so if you did build a chair, they'd adapt to sit on it. You wouldn't be able to build a playground as it'd be too complexed, but if they can adapt to walk on three legs or to play some drums, why not sit on a chair? This would also depend on the type of creature, as the chair would have to be around the same scale. What do you guys think?

I'm guessing the drum was not a drum per se but a representation as were all things in that period.

A fire = community
music is considered a primative langauge= drum

Its representational of how we think a creature may evolve.  I could be wrong but thats what it looks like to me.

I think there probably has to be limits somewhere in what you can do though if data is only 1k then that's a lot of data that can be fit into a very small space.

The concept we have seen of the game though so far has always only been a one way zoom. WHat I mean is you start as an omeba, zoom out to a creature in watre, out to a creature on land, out to a group of creatures in a vilage, out to the planet etc etc. You didnd't for example get to zoom out to the village stage from being a single creature on land and then zoom into a building and play with it's contents. If you could then that would open another whole new level to the game as you start playing a Sims type game in each building you create.

I wouldn't put it past Will but it certainly would add a lot more work I think.

He clearly stated you could 'zoom out from your city' and 'play it more like civilization', then 'zoom back in and micromanage'. But I doubt he'll let you play with the insides of a building - the insides of buildings are rather outside the scope of the game.

I don't see why we couldn't customize weapons or drums or fires. If we make something that has three ends none of them are pointy but we still want it to be a weapon, our creature will likely figure out how to kill something with it, just as it learns to walk. I think that we will be able to asign "interactions" to objects and the creatures will figure out what to do with them.

I think that would be an awesome feature.

Yeah, me too. Just backing it up, some people may have fogotten that the AI is supposed to figure out how to make anything work.

It should be able to figure it out, i mean they couldnt just adapt to it, but if you gave a brief description of what it is and what it does, and also how to work it, it should be able to search it own little dictionary of words and compile the information to figure out what to do, then you could asign interactions.

Too complex. Will's aiming for simplicity.

There might be something that lets you customize your tribal belongings... but it won't be that complex, if it exists at all.

Once again I can't see every creature in the Galaxy being confined to using a spear? There's just no logic to why some of these things would use a spear with the way they are.

That was a problem I saw. In the demo that was shown and I know it was just a demo, but it went from tribal to modern. I'd expect something greek, egyptain, medieval in between their.

To get to guns you need to have the bow and arrow first.

hopefully they are in the game, it'd make a better experience playing and you can start military things and such after the tribal phase or even during the tribal phase.

really, should weapon making be simple? All primitive weapons either stab, bash, slice, throw, impale, and/or castrate. Merely figuring out which one(s) the weapon is capable of should be the only major hurdle.
Mummy, why am I short and cuboid shaped? Is it a result of millions of years of evolution which have taught us that this is the best shape for survival.

If the AI can make our creature walk, it's bound to be able to figure out what part of an item is most sutable for killing. Jus tlike it figureds out what limb to wield with.

I was wondering, after reading a post about bows n arrows, how the game might handle throwing/projectile weapons.

Say for a bow, will the game spontaneously generate an arrow? Will it need a quiver? Will any creature be able to use a bow? Somehow I doubt that but anyway...

Thoughts?

That brings up a very good point. I thin kfor simplicity, just generating the arrows would be fine, it's kinda what they do for every other RTS.

I really like the idea that different weapons allow for different personalities and cultures to develop.  Using a lot of long range weapons might incline a race to be more cowardly or more stealth based while slow, heavy damaging weapons like axes lead to higher aggression.  If they're simply for the aesthetic choice of the player, that's fine too but if we are using this Sporum as a way to consider all possibilities, this one highly intrigues me.  -leeman

I agree, there are many paths even these little 'extras' could be developed into.

I'd like to know, still using the bow and arrow eg, how the game would handle 'inanimate' objects interacting such as the quiver of arrows and the bow. Would a creature actually use a skateboard?

There was mention of going via UFO to that other planet where they wielded Tridents, instead of Spears, so I think we can safely say that at least some items in the tribe-stage can be customized.

It doesn't seem implausible that fire pits and tents and all that could also be customized, just like in the Civ era you're making cosmetic changes to your city center but the game still knows how to interact with it because it's the same base structure.

Wasn't there a mention of the machine culture having glowing lights or whatzit on their buildings? That would suggest that you can place complex things, not just colors and shapes, on your custom content. So placing the particle emitter for a firepit isn't totally out of the question.

Huh, I wonder if the editor will need to have a system of checks on the editor to make sure content can't lag the crud out of people's systems if they make hyper-complex buildings or gigantic firepits that are spewing particles like a hose... but, Maxis didn't seem too shy about putting up lagtastic houses for Sims 2, such as a four-story bunker complex that could bring most any machine to its knees. The potential for content that could make performance suffer, might not even be a consideration.

I'm in no doubt about having customisable doodads such as spears -> axes etc.

Interesting point about performance but I still believe that because of the basis of the enigine it should be easily scalable depending on your configuration. Especially things like shadowing, emitters, poly detail and most especially animation detail.

The chance of in depth customisation in this game is very small from what I have heard. Particle emitters? Try explaining that to someone who plays The Sims.

Well it is unlikely but I wouldn't rule out a "fire comes out of here" or "glowing window" marker or some such.
