Here's a tip: don't learn c++!  Learn Java instead, it's a better language  ;D

Platform independant application creation and web applets, what more do you need?  Just download the JDK on http://java.sun.com/ and get a free IDE like NetBeans or Eclipse.  The rest is cake.

Yes, learn Java instead. Once you learn Java learning other programming languages is quite simple. Plus Java is really becomming "the" language to know (i.e. you can get a job using it :) ).

As somebody who knows C++ pretty well, I will also advise you to learn Java. It's much like C++, but easier, or so I've heard. C++ is an enormous pain to learn. On the other hand, it's the most powerful language as far as I know. That does lead to lots of problems, though... memory leaks galore!

If you really want to learn, though, I suggest getting Dev-cpp at www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html as well as checking out www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ for a bunch of good tutorials on the language.

I use mingw dev-studio which was a free IDE, you should definately get it at http://www.parinyasoft.com/.  It uses the mingw c++ compiler, which unfortunately can make it a pain to find precompiled libraries, however I managed to get most of what I need for SDL development without too much trouble.

As far as learning the language I would reccomend that you pick up a good book at your local barnes and noble, or amazon.  The sam's series of books seem to be highly reccomended.

By the way, Java can be very easily learned online for free.  The documentation available on http://java.sun.com/ is in my opinion the best and most detailed that I have ever seen from any language, with PHP trailing as second best.

I've been doing Java for a few years, and I have to agree with everyone else- go for it. java.sun.com offers some awesome documentation and tutorials- you can also find a lot of awesome links online. I have to say, I love everything about Java.
