Short stories
« on: July 03, 2006, 10:42:59 am »
In my opinion, short stories often bring out the best of authors. Books like "Greybeard" are very good, but long and they often make their point half-way through. Short stories, like the Red Plague, are compact and doesn't wear it's idea out. I feel this applies not only to Jack London or Brian Aldiss, but PKD, Stephen King, and many others. What are your thoughts? Am I just too lazy?

I love short stories. Especially those by Lovecraft and King. Ever read "The Mist" by King? That is a hell of a short story. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. Excellent pacing, great characters, and an ending that leaves you wishing he had made it into a novel instead.

Quite a funny and very short story is "They're made out of meat". I found it on wikipedia while reading up about stuff for some debate in the Spore forums ages ago.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

That meat thing was great. "Who would want to meet meat?"

Can't read Stephen King's novels but his short stories, as stated, are excellent. I also enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald's short fiction far more than, say, his most famous creation of The Great Gatsby. But no one beats Poe when it comes to short fiction. No one.

Short stories are great. As you said they do bring out the best of authors, and even lead on the some of the greatest stories.
