Because sound is a completely different thing. They would have to pre record into the computer EVERY sound imaginable.

Ill tell you, sometimes I wonder if people know what procedural means. If you look it up in a dictionary, you instantly get a notion of what WW means by it. I dont know about computers, but I get a notion of it.

Sound is something completely different from textures and animations. Animations and textures of that kind only exist on the computer. Sounds, on the other hand, only exist in the real world. Sound engineers record things, merge them together to make different sounds. For a computer to do it succesfully by itself procedurally, there would have to be so many sounds I doubt the Maxis team has the patience to do something like that.

Besides, you cant calculate how a particular monster or thing is going to sound. You may if you study it empirically, but you cant teach a computer on a game such a thing. Also, there are animals that sound nothing like what you would expect from them by how they look.

I imagine procedural sounds would work something like this...

first you have to put in a bunch of actual animal sounds, and assign each of them properties.

so beaks would add +1 tweet.
whiskers add +1 meow.
scales add +1 hiss

so if you make a creature that has a beak, whiskers and scales, you get a waveform that mixes those 3 sounds into one. A squeaky hissy meow of sorts.

Like for jurassic park, they mixed a lion's roar with an eagle's piercing squak to make the sound for a Tyrannosaurus.

The size of the creature would come into play as well, so if you have a small mammal with whiskers you get a soft meow, but a large mammal with whiskers gives you more of a roar.

...or something like that. Wouldn't be easy or very accurate, but it would give you many original sounds.

Well on the topic of sounds how about... Allowing us to select our own sound effect pack our creature makes? That way it's not only around like 8 different sounds or something but instead include as many as you want. And sure some creatures may turn out sounding bizarre but just look at them... Unless there's a really sophisticated Sound generator in place that can generate more than just 1 per mouth.

We should be able to choose the color of our creature's internal fluid.
(Last time this was mentioned: March 2005 in the UFO thread, but not here.)

Though that's a very good idea and I hadn't thought of it, what would be your definition of 'small' or 'large'. You're saying these sounds are based on body as well as mouth (should technically be based on mouth and nose), but you're kinda not seeing that because of the massively open range of things you can do to the body, you really would need a massive database of noises to take in every single tiny aspect of it. They're 3D creatures so if you take in height, you take in width, length, then every body part that would effect the sound it makes. So we're really talking the height, width and length of main body, neck, snout, facial features... and then some people might make a creature with two main body parts, so they'd have to take in that, also. I love the idea, of course, I'd love it if not every animal I gave a particular beak made the same noise, but I think on a scale of how much work they have to do and how much longer I don't want to wait for the game...

*sighs* I'm impatient, yeesh, imagine what the 7 years I waited for Dreamfall was like.

That would be fun. Anyone who's seen the Star Trek movies knows Klingons, the big, bad warrior race, bleeds pink. How funny is THAT? Considering all things, however, it does seem logical most species would have red bloods.

I normally don't get red out of bugs, or blood for that matter. The hemolymph of most insects is either colorless or yellow in color.

I think 100 different sounds in combination with each other would give you something like 10,000+ unique sounds... I think it's a good idea to let us CHOOSE these sound combinations, and tweak the end result, at least by changing the EQ (raise treble, lower bass...)

as far as body size coming into play, I think the system is probably smart enough to calculate the approximate weight of a creature, so if a creature weighs over a certain amount the larger animal sound would be applied. That is, if the sound is going to be calculated based on what you create.

I don't expect this to be at all scientifically accurate, just varied enough to make a LOT of original sounds.

Unique mini-adventures. Think Star Trek. Imagine running into a nifty Nebula that at its heart has an artifact that'll increase your UFO's structural integrity by 15% or something like that. As you try to grab it, you find the nebula reacts dangerously, such as hitting you with nebula lightning, or you suddenly find yourself in a wall of small asteroids. When you blast your way through, you find the artifact, but the Nebula is actually alive. However, before you can take it, you see that it's an important part of the creatures vascular system or its brain or something. So, if you take it, you get an increase in your ships health but because of the reputation this garners you, everyone you meet with dislikes you somewhat. If you don't, however, you gain access to a new type of research. A Particle Beam that will heal the Nebula Creature, as well as enhance crop growth and therefore increase the income you have for your UFO. This will also increase your favourable reputation.

This is just an example, but I think you get the idea.

Oh, I see... yeah, then it probably wouldn't actually be that difficult... I guess if they based it on weight and the mouth you choose, it'd actualy be pretty easy. Ah, we'll see.

I have a wishlist a mile long, but I'm going to go ahead and probably quite accurately guess that it's all been mentioned already.

ok ok ok, u all want to know about sounds huh? id imagine normal sounds like beating drums and all that wouldnt be procedual, depending on which mouth u choose determinds the voice, thier are set voices for each mouth, changing the mouth piece shape and size changes the pitch and bend of the voice, if u want to know how procedual music is made listen to the conference Will Wright has with Brain Eno, alternatively u can visit bian enos site which contains alot of proceedualy created content and music

Eno's site: My life in the bush of ghosts

I wish u guys would read all the posts and links before starting arguements that have allerady been answered
