My mean looking Gastly worked in the end. Normally I just use something with sleep powder to catch one of those things but there doesnt seem to be one such early on and Zubat doesn't learn Mean Look until level 29. Got the sucker now though.

Do they have fast balls on platinum? If not, use a nest ball with your highest leveled Pokémon.

Fast balls aren't in Plat, but Quick Balls (which work on the principle of higher catch rate with the use of the ball on the first turn, slowly decreasing each certain amount of turns) work just as well. And depending on where he is, a Nest ball might not be the best alternative.

Aren't Abras usually pretty low leveled?

My Team:
Staraptor - Lv 100 - Adamant/Jolly nature (It's pretty much either speed or attack, but I'm leaning towards speed (Jolly))
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Overall physical sweeper.

Brave Bird - physical STAB
Close Combat - Kill off those pesky Rock/Steel types.
U-Turn/Roost - Either to expand my typing or to get healed, I'm leaning toward U-Turn.
Return/Quick Attack - Second physical STAB, not sure whether to pick power or speed

Aggron - Lv 100 - Impish/Adamant Nature (Leaning towards defense over attack (Impish))
EVs: 124 HP / 128 Atk / 252 Def
Physical Tank with some damaging power behind it.

Iron Tail/Iron Head - Reliability vs power, probably going for reliability 120 base vs 150 base is negligible really and Iron Tail will be missing at 75 acc
Toxic/Stone Edge - Damage yay + Another dilemma with Stone Edge.
Aqua Tail - Destroy fire, rock and ground
Stone Edge/Rest - Either another STAB or healing possibilities... Leaning towards healing.

Yanmega - Lv 100 - Modest/Timid Nature (Sp.Atk boost vs Speed boost.
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Spd
THIS THING IS A BEAST GOD I WANT TO MAKE SWEET LOVE TO IT
Ability: Speed Boost if I go with the Sp. Atk nature and Tinted Lens if I go with the Speed nature.

Bug Buzz - STAB special attack, no further explanation needed.
Air Slash - STAB special attack
Detect/Hypnosis/Ancientpower - Detect if Speed Boost is my ability for a free Speed raise, Hypnosis for free hits, Ancientpower for super effective hits on fire types
Shadow Ball - Filler

Sceptile - Lv 100 - Timid Nature
EVs: 216 HP / 40 SAtk / 252 Spd
Subseeding

Leaf Storm/Energy Ball - Leaning towards Energy Ball for repetitive use.
Substitute  - Herp
Leech Seed - Derp
Dragon Pulse/Hidden Power/X-Scissor [ICE] - Getting the hidden power would require me to learn how to get hidden power types. Dragon Pulse would be to nail Dragon types and get neutral hits on other grass types, or I could get X-Scissor and hope my Attack is adequate enough to kill grass types. Leaning to ice because it kills flying types as well.

Typhlosion - Lv 100 -Modest nature.
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd
Special Sweeper

Eruption/Sunny Day - For massive damage, or if I feel I'm getting pummeled too soon to actually set it off, switch with Sunny Day
Focus Blast - Coverage, mostly against rock
Flamethrower - Either backup for Eruption or simply my main STAB.
Solarbeam/Will-o-Wisp - Solarbeam if I use Sunny day and Will-o-wisp to rack up some damage.

Luxray - Lv 100 - Rash Nature
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Sp. Atk
Mixed Sweeper

Thunderbolt - STAB
Ice Fang/Hidden Power [GRASS] - HP requires me to learn how to get that type
Crunch - Ghost and Psychic coverage mostly.
Return/Thunder Wave/Toxic - Powerful neutral hitter. Debating whether to discard it for the support moves stated.

I have too many sweepers, deal w/ it. I basically made a team with my favourite pokeymanz
I can probably use better pokemon, but I love these guys.

I like my Main story Platinum team. Not really set towards being a meta game team I usually build meta teams after finishing the main game and build them from scratch.

My team (after full evolution)

Torterra, Charizard (traded as an egg), Heracross, Salamance (also traded as an egg), the Kazaam (I finally caught that Abra), and Omnastar.

I may not be the only person who has this issue with the TV series but my point remains valid. In other news currently during a play through of Pokemon Platinum and trying to get me an Abra. The only Pokemon I have to prevent it from escaping is a mean look Gastly but it's too slow. Gaaah!

Mmmm.  Pokewalker.

Anyway, since everyone's doing it, my team in SoulSilver currently consists of Typholsion, Haunter, Gyarados, Graveler, Kadabra and Dodrio

My dream team:

Typhlosion LV. 100
Modest nature
EV's 252 Sp. Attack/252 Speed/4 Special Defense
Overall Special sweeper.

Eruption-Power from HP.
Flamethrower- Always a good move.
Sunny Day- Power up all moves.
Solarbeam- Say goodbye, Water, Ground, and Rock types!

Metagross LV. 100
Gentle nature
EV's 252 Sp. Defense/252. Sp. Attack/4 Hp
Overall Special tank.

Psychic- Special STAB? Plus, lowering enemy Sp. Defense.
Focus Blast- Destroy Dark.
2 others, don't know.

4 others, don't know.
Who are you again and why in the world would you expect anything resembling rationality or civility in youtube comments?

Metagross' Attack and Defense are far superior.
If you go with Gyro Ball, go with a speed lowering nature that boosts either defense or attack. If not, then it doesn't matter what nature, as long as defense or attack get boosted and none of the two get lowered.

I'd go with Zen Headbutt and Gyro Ball/Iron Head as STAB physical moves, Ice Punch/Thunderpunch for coverage (Flying and Water vs Grass, Flying, Dragon and Ground, I'd roll with Icepunch). Last move, do whatever Toxic, Iron Defense, whatever you see fit.

Or you can EV both in Sp Def and Def and give him Zen Headbutt and Iron Head for STAB as well as giving him Rest and Iron Defense/Toxic/Reflect/Light Screen/Sleep Talk (Sp.Def boosting nature to bring it up with its regular Def.)

That falls apart due to the fact I was playing Pokemon Platinum. It was far far quicker to battle and level up the gastly that way than to trade across to a copy of Heart Gold then to the walker, level up via walking trade back and forth from the walker for each level then trade back into platinum.

Often you can get Abra in a Great Ball at full health. Easier than training up a slow pokemon to outspeed it, if you've got money to spare.

I don't know if Typhlosion can set up Sunny Day on its own reliably. If you really want it, you might want to add it to another 'mon on your team for redundancy.
Not a winner anymore.

I already got the Abra so it matters not. Only had to level Gastly 2 levels to out speed the Abra. Although I have now noticed I don't have anyway of paralyzing mons I want to catch makes it a lot harder to get them May have to pick a HM slave that can learn thunder wave or stun spore to take with me.

I meant catch the abra with the pokewalker.

Considaring that still I am playing Platinum that would mean earning the watts to find and catch one (assuming abra was available on the stroll I went for) I then have to put the Abra from the Walker to HG then from HG to Platinum. Still so much easier to train Gastly up 2 levels.
