The Gnith - By ilikesanta
« on: June 06, 2006, 01:02:05 am »

The first picture I drew about a year ago with artpad, the 2nd one was done by operaghost 21.

The Gnith (like Gnome) starts off in the ocean as a squid like creature with ten tentacles, five at each end but with one of those actually being it head. At the end of each tentacles is a curved spike, that curves inward easier to to hold onto it's prey. Having tentacles at both ends helps the Gnith move forwards and barwards and deters potential enemies from eating them because they're not sure how to approach them, but they still have problems with the more larger sea creatures.

The Gniths move to land for a better a food source. At first they lay in wait during low tide and prey birds that scavenged for food. The Gniths would lay right at the waters edge and when the big got close enough they would push off with their legs and wrap their arms around their victims them drag them into the ocean. Later they would drag them self across the breach to feast off a fruit that grew near the edge of the beach.

The Gnith's bone structure started to change, instead of having many shorts bones in it tentacles (sorta like a snake) it stared to to get fewer and longer bones. The spikes at the end of the Gnith got shorter and blunter, while the claws closest to it's neck got longer. Gnith started to walk upright when it realized that it could move faster that way. It's bottom spikes now worked more liked hooves.

Gnith started to hunt in packs, and enjoy social games and would wrestle for the effections of the females in the pack. With generations of the spawn of the best wrestlers of the pack, the Gnith developed a powerful mid section. With the combination of it's now powerful legs the Gnith can take down creatures almost twice it's size even without the use of it's sharp spikes.

Then develops gaspers somehow... well that's all I got right now. Let me know what you think.

I made this creature as a joke at first. I was inspired by Thing from The Adams Family then I thought it would cool if it was a two hands jointed at the wrist. You'll notice it's belt is a wrist watch and that it's black hooves are actually painted with black nail polish because it's "totally goth." But then I liked it and deiced it would become my first creature.

Heh, I actually like it, it made me chuckle. I can imagine it flailing all four of its arms madly as it chases it next meal, though in the mental image it couldnt move very fast due to the short legs and tall body. Still I think it'd be fun to see this seeded into someones game as the hunter species :3

Added a fuzzy clay photo. I was excited because i found a clay set at the dollar store and they give you 16 colors for only a buck! But you don't get that much clay per color so I had to combine three or four colors to make the body but still it wasn't quite enough clay to work with. Maybe I'll buy a couple more sets. Anyway that's how I kinda want it to look, except less fuzzy.
