China Mieville's New Crobuzon Series
« on: June 02, 2006, 08:02:05 am »
I mentioned this here a while back but I thought I would test the waters and see what people think of this guy.  He reads like the abominable offspring of Pratchett and Gaiman if they had tied him up in a sack and dumped him into Anne Rice's lagoon.  Very dark.  Very self-aware and yet still very fun.  His setting is very gothic and he likes the word "moist" a little much but I really enjoyed his books.  Perdido Street Station, The Scar, and the Iron Council are the only three I know of in this series.  They're very imaginative and very creepy.  He succeeds at that style of writing where you actually feel the soul of the city.  Again, much like Ankh-Morpork or Neverwhere.   I heartily recommend these books to people looking for some decadently dark reading.  This guy is so hinting at someone making this into a roleplaying game.  He's not subtle at all.  Trouble is, it would be a very fun setting for one.  -leeman
