Krakow Sam studios presents: The Salux
« on: May 30, 2006, 03:04:17 pm »
This is the outcome of that poll I did a while back. You wanted more, so here's more. But first a repetition of the first post.

This is a member of the Salux species.
The Salux are an enigma in that they should never have evolved to become sapient, seeing as they are Cnidarians (jellyfish) and should have become more complex before becoming intelligent. It is highly suspected alien intelligence was involved in their evolution.
Despite the Salux becoming intelligent they had the weaknesses of all other jellyfish. They are incredibly fragile, have very short lifespans and are physically feeble. The second point became the obsession of their species.
Soon after the discovery of scientific method the Salux began working feverishly to extend their lifespans by any means possible, so they could match or even exceed thos of the fish and other animals which shared the oceans of their home planet. When microscopy was discovered and germs were found to be the cause of disease, the Salux flew into a state of bezerk paranoia and germ-phobia. Disinfectants were mercilessly pumped into the sea, one individual in 5 went on to become a medical doctor and a further two of those five would inavariably become microbiologists. After millenia of trying the Salux got their wish. they had sucessfully eradicated every harmful micro-organism from the face of their planet and through cybernetics and other technologies had extended their lifespans from five years to over five hundred.
The Salux in the picture is clad in customary biohazard bubble and is wearing disposable orange gloves to prevent contact with repulsive germs. The device in his hand is a dispenser for disinfectant, which he is using on the handprint recognition device imbedded in a Salux bubble-building (on activation a doorway will open in the mebranous wall).
On the galactic stage the Salux hope to one day wipe out all disgusting, filthy germs from the entire galaxy. Although they are reasonably keen to make contact with other spacefarers they are often incapable of getting past their sense of revulsion when faced with an <urk> contaminated vessel (since their ships are totally 100% sterile) or, gods forbid, an entire planet crawling with microbes.

Below is the evolution of the Salux from a primitive jellyfish-like creature. Its bafflingly short and the entire process seems only to have taken around 25 million years. The white star represents the point at which it is thought an alien intelligence interfered with the development of the Salux.

From left to right we see:

1. The most primitive form of the Salux is simply a mobile stomach with stinging tendrils
2. This stage sees the evolution of a separate internal structure, allowing the Salux to respond to stimuli and functioning as a basic nervous system
3. Tendrils thicken and the 'pseudochord' elongates to become a whip-like form of propulsion.
4. Tendrils evolve into fin-like structures. Whip diverges into three, now used to snare prey.
5. Interfearance. Body mass increases drastically, pseudochord quadruples in size and increases in density by ten. Three small sensory nodes form at the base of the body.
6. Fins begin to become vestigial, graspers evolve, sensory nodes increase in size and desity.
7. Modern Salux.

The Salux do have a limited form of optical vision (they can make out light and shapes directly above them as an evolutionary response to ambush by predators from above) but mainly percieve their environement by sensing electric and magnetic signals and pressure waves using their three sensory nodes.
The Salux also communicate in electric impulses. The name Salux is therefore not one they give themselves. The closest translation of their name in their language is EEEEEEE<krzzz>EEEEEE. The EEE being a high frequency signal and the <krzzz> being a crackling static-like sound, the two sounds overlay and vary in intensity.

It remind me of a trilateral symmetric squid I'm working on. That creature actually fin in with my creatures plant. Still i have a lot of work to do. Maybe i will not have anything to show until spore comes out. Most work on there math system which is Septemvigesimal based (Base-27) and a little bit on there culture. Fun to see someone else experiment with trilateral symmetry.
Check out my Creatures.

Religion and Gods
The Salux had only a rudimentary sense of vision (before the advent of cybernetics) which was sensitive to only shapes and light. However, they were very much aware of the large moon which orbited their homeworld as it was not only bright but it also had a relatively strong magnetic field, the effects of which would be sensed as it orbited the planet. Since they lived in the sea the Salux were heavily affected by tides and soon noticed that they related to the moon and its position. The moon became their head God, and the concepts of light/dark and strong/weak became the chief concepts of the salux religion. Below is a common representation of AAaa<tttttt>aaAA the moon God.

AAaa<tttttt>aaAA (I don't know how to pronounce it either) has a strong (light) arm a weak (dark) arm and a middle (balance) arm, which is always seen reaching out towards the viewer. He has Three large silver sensory nodes to signify his great perception (one of which is always hidden to signify that he perceives what mortals do not) in his two polar hands he holds two stylized stars, one light and one dark.
AAaa<tttttt>aaAA is the only singular god in the Salux pantheon as he contains both the strong and weak aspects within him (note, that strong and weak do not have the same connotations in the Salux. Strong is not always good and weak is not always bad)
Below are three god pairs from the Salux pantheon:

Green, Wisdom: Iiiii<dtdtdtd>i (left, strong) and eeE<ddd>Eee (right, weak).
Iiiii<dtdtdtd>i Embodies wisdom and intelligence, he has a very large pseudochord.
eeE<ddd>Eee Is the personification of Knowledge. he has hugely swollen sensory nodes which he uses to find out about everything, he relies on his partner god to make sense of what he sees. His nodes are so big he has to hold them up in his arms.

Yellow, Love: Jjj<krrr>iiiI (left, strong) and Yeyeye<dgdgdg>YY (right, weak).
Jjj<krrr>iiiI is erotic love and reproduction. He has gigantic reproductive organs (which are actually totally transparent in the human visible spectrum. The salux assure other aliens that the reproductive organs on this god are in fact very impressive).
Yeyeye<dgdgdg>YY Is platonic or familial love. For some reason he has huge hands... no-one knows why. What they say about people with big hands on Salux is that they make good parents, so dont snigger.

Red, Conflict: TTTtt<I>tt (left, strong) and Ssss<iii>SSss (right, weak).
TTTtt<I>tt represents victory through brute force. he has only one arms, but it is large and powerful and he has a clawed hand.
Ssss<iii>SSss represents victory through manipulation and machiavellian intrigue. He has many handless tendrils with which he manipulates the affairs of mortals. He is about as close to the devil as Salux have, although he is not strictly evil.

Uh... no?
To be honest I hadnt thought about that.
I guess I'll take the path that they continued worshipping the idea of the god after they stopped worshipping the actual moon.

Besides, you think the Egyptians actually believed there was a physical beetle pushing the sun around? Of course not, and if they had figured out the earth orbits the sun then they probably would have adapted their myth (after initial resistance)

Anyhoo. The picture below is the Galactic age Salux Steriliser.

The Sterilisers are the elite enforcers and protectors within Salux society, carrying out the functions of police, SWAT team and Biohazard containment in one.
Their last function is seen as the most imporatant by the Salux. If an accident or an attack or just dumb fate cause a germ to be released into the environement of a Salux colony the Sterilisers will be mobalised. Arriving at the scene they will pump the surroundings with caustic disinfectant and treat items with jets of superheated water. Any living beings at the scene which may be infected are ruthlessly killed by the Sterilisers to prevent infection from spreading.
In trying to extend their lifespans the Salux became adept in the field of cybernetics, a fringe benefit of this was the development of the Steriliser biohazrad suit. The torso section is simply brittle plastic, but the tentacles are clad in a cybernetic 'second skin'. Inside the suit at intervals, electrodes stick into the wearer's tentacles and allow the suit to augment the movements of the wearer for increased speed and strength. Additionally, tubes run through the devices which allow the wearer to dispense liquid or gaseous substances as though from the palms of their hands. These can be disinfectant, steam, cryo-fluid, or ,in wartime situations, molten plasma.

I like these guys. They're interesting. They're unique, but they're also not "HAY LOOK IM MORE UNIQUE THAN U U SUK LOL."

Edit: Some things I would like to know about these fellows. 1. How tall are they? 2. If an enemy species happened to launch it's septic tank at them like a missle, and it collided with their ship, would all passengers die of shock? "OMGZ! TEH GEEEEEEEERMS!-explode-"

Yay! Spaceships.

Salux spaceships are of medium size in comparison to those of other species (I'll think about the actual sizes for addition to the scale thread later). They are also quite slow when not using their interstellar drive. However, they are quite formidable in combat due to their use of unorthodox 'tendril' weapons. Ports in the side of the ship spew out a length of filament, which is then given a strong energetic charge. The body of the ship itself is given the opposite charge so the tentacles are forced away and drift through empty space. If they get near enough to another ship they will be rapidly attracted to it and unload their charge causing huge systems damage to the ship. This unique weapon system can bypass most force-fields but is unfortunately limited to short range use. For long range these ships posess rather mediocre missile and beam weapons.
Seen here are the medium sized 'Aurita' class survey vessel, the small 'Beroe' classtransport and the large 'Cyanea' class battleship.

Qué?

More spaceships.

These are Nematocyst class fighters. The purpose of these is to be spewed out in great numbers from their carrier ship and to serve the dual purpose of taking down enemy fighters, and weakening the defenses of larger ships to allow the Salux battleships to finish them off.
Unlike their carriers, nematocysts have very fast sublight engines but all in all quite weak weaponry. A standard fighter will have a compliment of around thirty missiles and a few peashooter style energy weapons. What distinguishes the Nematocysts is that they all carry a one-shot 'sting' for taking down large or heavily armoured targets. The sting is deployed from the star shaped hatch on the nose and shoots out at extremely high speed attatched to a long legth of strong cable in case it misses its target and needs to be reset. Stings come in three varieties which must be fitted before launching in the hangar.
A Penetrant sting is an incredibly sharp and hard harpoon-like structure which is superheated before firing. Once it has penetrated a hull the fighter delivers a massive electrical discharge through the cable and into the tip of the sting, resulting in massive local systems faliure in the target vessel (some poorly constructed vessels have been known to be totally disabled by a single sting of this kind). The cable is then severed and the fighter must return to the hangar to be fitted with a new sting.
A Glutinant sting is blunt compared to the Penetrant. It is desinged to shatter on impact and spatters the area with a highly adhesive and corrosive substance, which immediately begins to corrode the hull and weaken structural intensity.
A Volvent sting is essentially a modified verison of the tendril weapons used by larger Salux ships. A long length of charged cable is spewed into space. This sting is most commonly deployed against other small fighter vessels.
