Installation problem: license server
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:11:11 am »
Hi everyone, hopefully somebody can answer this, as I've tried everything I can think of.

I bought Spore when it came out, but I finally have a PC that can run it with all the fancy graphics, so I wanted to install it. It's been years since I last played, and I don't have the computers I had it on before. This time, I work at a boarding school and have to use their crippled internet which uses DeepNines Internet Security. I hate it. I think this may be where my problem is coming from, but I'm not sure.

I go to install the game, and I do okay until it tries to start the game for the initial license verification I guess. It says "The game cannot start. There seems to be a problem contacting the license server. Ensure your internet connection is active and try again in a few minutes."

I've tried again and again. I've installed it on my external hard drive, taken it to a friends house and ran it on their laptop just fine (had to reinstall though). When I brought it back on campus, it gave me the same error (again running off the external). I've even thought about running through a remote desktop connection, but I'm not sure how as I don't have access to my hard drive on it. Any ideas?

None really. Spore's internet serverside stuff is pretty botched. If you could find some way to disable the DeepNines for a few minutes so you can install it, that may help narrow down the problem, but aside from that, I got nuffin.

My advice: Using school internet connections is always a bad idea. I suggest getting yourself a 3G internet subscription.

Unfortunately, neither are options. I can't get my own internet, unless I get satellite internet (i'm way out in the countryside) and I can't bypass it as the administration can hardly work with it themselves. They have to call out people to help every time there is a problem. The other Resident Parents have trouble with this too, as DeepNines blocks some weird things. My wife tried to buy diapers online and it marked an online store as "pornography". DeepNines is famous for that sort of stuff around here.

Is there a legal way to bypass the authentication, just trick it into thinking I already did it? I know people play this without it since it was so famously the most pirated game ever. I have authenticated before, and I have the code, I just, for all intensive purposes, don't have internet, and I can't really carry my CPU to somewhere with internet.

Side note: If I did manage to authenticate by carrying the tower to somewhere that I can get an internet connection, would I be able to play it from then on without internet, or is it going to authenticate again at the end of the game or something and frustrate me to death?

It should be ok, unless you stop playing for about two weeks or so, in which case it will request re-verification. It did that to me once, but once I played it on another comp, it cleared up for some reason.

I have the same "connection" problems. Does anyone find a good solution of this problem?

I can't be sure if this is the cause, but recently EA replaced the "EADM" that Spore needed open to run, with "Origins", a buggy, sluggish, draconian program with a creepy EULA. Agreeing to that EULA waives your rights to take legal action against EA, and if you manage to get around that, you gave EA rights to pick and mix the when, where and how of the -arbitration- that will be used to settle it. On top of that, agreeing to the EULA gives them your personal OK to data-mine your computer.

Yes, lots of other programs monitor data, but it is normally directly relevant to the product, and reputable companies/programs will make this opt-in/out, not mandatory, and will tell you exactly what data they're collecting. Origins doesn't.

I would guess that this may have something to do with the registry process, though Spore's internet connectivity was notoriously shaky even back then. Assuming it even installed correctly and didn't wreck itself just trying to apply patches, let alone the expansions. Good luck! :S
