The Neverhood
« on: May 15, 2006, 07:08:35 am »
After stumbling upon the game's entry on Wikipedia, I find myself in a somewhat nostalgic mood. For those who are unfamilliar with it, I will explain. The Neverhood features 100% claymation, meaning everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is made out of clay. The game itself is an adventure game a la Myst, where the player takes control of Klaymen, the (so it would appear) sole inhabitant of a mysterious clay world called the Neverhood. By solving puzzles and collecting videodiscs, you'll slowly uncover the story behind the Neverhood's creation and its ultimate fate. Add to the mix some slapstick-ish humor, catchy guitar-based music with absurb vocals, and breath-taking visuals, and you have one unforgettable experience that, despite being out of print for many years, still maintains an averagely sized cult following.

So, anyone else familliar with this game, and have some stories to share? Discuss it here.

Yea, that was a great game, though I never did finish it. I had a tendency to push buttons with signs like "DO NOT PUSH". I just couldn't help myself. Also, I loved the skull monkey spin off games. Great music in those, soooo demented.

I still have a copy of this game somewhere... I think I beat it both ways. It had 2 endings, right?

Anyway, I hated that sliding puzzle where you had to make an "H".

This game was sooo cool.

Yep, there were indeed. Spoilers for those who haven't played it yet (highlight to read):
The bad ending where Klaymen becomes the new ruler of the Neverhood, and the good ending where Hoborg is resurrected. You could also die by jumping down the drain (which is an exceedingly silly thing to do, seeing how it's surrounded by signs saying "Don't jump down the drain! You will die!").
Good times, good times.

And for those curious among you, here's Just Adventure's review + screenshots:

You can also download a CD rip (missing movies and some music unfortunately) from Home Of The Underdogs, but you're better off finding a CD image if you want the full game.

Well IMO you can't compare the two. Neverhood places more emphasis on Myst-style puzzles, whereas Grim Fandango is a traditional adventure game with conversations, inventory etc. etc.
