i just think a monolith should be more than a big black sqaure
Duh, I think it's supposed to be a play on 2001: A Space Oddyssey (sp?)..... hmm....
Maybe he's saying some kind of alien did that to the apes, and that's why we became intelligent....  ;D

Am I the only one who doesn't know what the hell a monolith exactly is.

hmmm...ok...thanks
although I still don't really get the point of it.
I didn't watch that Space Odyssey thing, why is it so important? (I've been told repeatedly that it was rather ****ty)

mono = one
lith = stone
mega = big (and there are several megalith sites around the world)

The idea Kubric put forward with 2001 (actually, Arthur Clarke) was that aliens dropped this massive stone onto the Earth and it was so out of place that it inspired curiousity in the apes.  They crowded around it, got all excitable and started jumping and grunting.  A fight broke out and one of the apes who was holding a bone swung his arms at another ape, the bone hit him and killed him.  The attacker made the connection that the other ape died because he had hit him with the bone, and now he understood (as well as an ape could) that he had power. The discovery of weapons as the first tool and the path to humanity was started.  Monolith = advance the species to intelligence.

This sounds really far-fetched, and the other hand it makes somehow sense....

naaaah whatever, nice tool
