Computer-controlled wars?
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:58:35 am »
I was just contemplating a classic scene from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (which, if you haven't read yet, is an absolute must-read), in which two alien races on the brink of war are accidentally pushed into centuries of conflict because of a casual remark uttered by one of the main characters ended up in a freak wormhole and drifted across the conference table when the leaders of both races are negotiating terms, and was misinterpreted as being a dreadful insult in the tongue of one of the two. Thus, I then thought this: what if computer-controlled alien races be able to wage war on one another, and if so, would the player be able to influence them somehow, like aiding one side, or watching the battle unfold and exploit it for your own purposes?

It would be a terrible shame if things like galactic wars and other events were not happening outside that player's influence in order to make the universe a real living one rather than one that merely responded to the player
it would be awesome to be a diplomatic referee in the middle of all that  ;)

They can have alliances so I don't see why not :P

As long as one doesn't take over the whole entire galaxy before I get my UFO then I'm happy.

I hope it will happen, it would make the game experience even so much better. You could even interfere and help one of the fighting sides

I have over 50 creatures, I only upload my best so each of these should be good. All my creatures work ingame, and are beliveable.

This would be absolutely fantastic. Even if it was represented on a smaller scale. While you're cruising around exploring your world with your creature, you could see other creatures encroaching on predator's "routes" and watch what happens. Would give you a good sense of what to expect if you went up against that creature in a fight down the road.

And then, like you said, if this was done on a galactic scale (albeit smaller, of course), that would be the best. Just to zip around in your UFO and observe how other creatures did or did not get along.

Most MMO's creatures don't wander into each other's territories, though, so I don't know how possible or easy to program this would be.

On a side note, they could have named this game SMORE--Single-Massively Online Realtime Evolution. Or maybe substitute Massively with Personal or Procedural or something.

Procedural would have been better

Is there no space fleets?  If not, then it would be pointless.

Well, Will's home planet was assaulted.

So the aliens had to have gotten there some how.

it could be the AI U.F.O?

But the AI supposedly has no UFO. But... they had to have one in order to colonize that planet. This is why the game will not come out until 2007.

In the CGW article, it says that no one elses UFO will come to your planet before you can defend your self, therefore hinting that other alien species will have their own UFO.
Please, lets not bring religion into this...

In the IGN movie, the homeplanet of Will's species is attacked, so the attacking species would have to have some form of interstellar transportation to attack a different solar system
