Xbox 360 to become the next PS2?
« on: May 17, 2005, 10:05:01 am »
What with all this crazy revelations of all the next-gen consoles, I'm wondering to myself which one will come out on top, at least sales-wise. This generation, the PS2 obviously won, not neccesarily because of any technological advantages or exclusive games (heck, even the GTAs came out for Xbox) but because it came out first, I believe. It got a good start on the other consoles and everybody had one by the time GC and Xbox came out.

So, I was thinking to myself today, isn't the Xbox 360 going to come out first? If I recall, they're shooting for a 2005 release so they can hit Christmas. (If they aren't, they really should.) If the Xbox 360 does indeed come out in Christmas, I have a feeling it will get a big jump on the other consoles. It could become the generation dominator like the PS2 did, at least in the beginning.

Yeap, this is all my superior economics knowledge (haha) talking. Anybody have some thoughts?

PS2 won becuase it appealed to the japanese crowd and because it came out first.

Don't always think that because a console is realeased earlier, it will do any better.

Look at the whole dreamcast fiasco.. :-\ Now poor sega only make games.
It could be frankie. It could be very fresh and clean. It could be a balloon.

That's true, but Dreamcast wasn't exactly a PS2 or Xbox or GameCube, either.

The dreamcast was/is in the same generation of consoles as the current ones, but I think it was released tooooo early, and obvisouly not up to the standard of a ps2, xbox or GC

Why would anyone get an XB360?  It lacks in comparison to the PS3.  Besides, it's all about the games...and price!

guess we'll have to wait and see what titles are coming out, most of which will probably be multiplatform anyway

Yeah, but it's true, to some extent. Xbox didn't have a big market in Japan until recently.

He IS right. Japan REALLY did not like XBox.
PS2 succeded not because it came out first (though that definately helped) but because the PSX already had a strong following. ESPECIALLY in Japan, where the N64 was a relative flop. Considering that Microsoft will have AT MOST a six-month lead on the PS3, and SO MANY sequels to popular PS2 games were announced for the PS3, it's a pretty safe bet that rabid PS2 owners aren't going to switch because of the one or two good games Microsoft will be able to release in their six month window.

Actually the Xbox still sells like total crap in Japan. That is why the Xbox 360 isn't a gaming machine (have you noticed that they never mention it as a gaming machine?) Rather Microsoft is going to position the Xbox 360 as a "media" machine which also connects you to the internet. The Xbox 360 is going to be a Trojan horse for expanding the services which Microsoft can provide to you.

So when you get your Xbox 360 "to play games" you'll also have to sign up for Xbox Live if you want all the "best, cool stuff" which Microsoft owns, and then they'll record all your games and high-scores and such, which they'll own, and you can download movies and music into the Xbox 360, which they will own, and so on and so on.

I mean, you didn't really think Microsoft was interesting in making a game system, did you? Oh no, they are just looking for new markets to conquer and the Xbox 360 is an excellent way to get a "desktop MS device" into your home and then drive you to additional "necessary" MS services. Don't be fooled, Microsoft is using the Xbox 360 as a marketing tool and nothing more...

Which is exaclty why I will never own a Xbox or Xbox 360.  I want a game console damn it, not a media center.  If I wanted a media center I would build it myself.  They fall in that terrible catagory of Jack of all Trades, Master of None.  The more I look at the next gen the more I think Nintendo is going to continue to be my system of choice.

Well... at least you don't seem bitter about the whole thing. (/sarcasm ;D)

I don't really think the XBox will have any real staying power, especially since learning that the US gaming market is much smaller than I thought, at least in relation to the world market (can't remember which podcast that was). I do think it'll be successful here, especially with the 'now' mentality that's present in both American culture, as well as their advertising. Still, for Microsoft's sake, I do hope they're working on the XBox 3 already, because I imagine Sony will add quite a bit to the table when the PS3 rolls around.

That is the thing Sony is saying to, The PS3 is NOT a gaming machine", it seems to be the way to go wonder what nintendo will do.
