Ok this is a long story but stay with me on this. A few weeks ago I e-mailed Will Wright ...

Quote
Will,

I don't suppose there is any way I could get an invite from you to just
see your speech at E3? It's way too expensive for me to go and all i
wanted to go there for was to actually meet ya in person since you. The
LA Convention Center  was would be close enough for me to drive to for
this which is why i wanted to go (i live in Torrance CA). I know this
was a long shot but i thought it would not hurt to try.

Your fan and creature creator,
Hydromancerx ~

hydro.mancer@verizon.net

In which he actually answered back to my surprise because i thought i was just a long shot. His e-mail said (note my real name is Todd) ...

Quote
Todd,

I put you on the invite list for VIP access to our room. But I don't know how to get you into E3 without a badge. We don't seem to have any extra badges, I just checked.

-Will

In which i got really excited cause than ment i could actually meet him and even see his VIP room ... however there was one problem. I still did not have a badge to get into E3 t get to the VIP room. So i sent an e-mail back.

Quote
So do i still need to get a ticket to E3 to get to that? Or is there a
way to get to the VIP room without actually going into E3? Is there any
way I could be escorted in by somone? Gah or something!?!?

Hydro ~

PS Thank you for the fast response.

And he answered ...

Quote
Todd,

I'm actually not sure. Since we don't run E3, it's more up to the E3expo organizers. I'll ask and see if anyone knows anything around here.

-Will

Thus i became sad because i am so close to meeting him and cannot afford a ticket. So i looked around and thought about who to ask. And e-mailed Will Wright again ...

Quote
I was looking on Gaming Steve and somone posted the floor plans for E3. It looks like EA is front and center by the door.

E3 Map
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/8608/qqq5dx0gh.gif

However where exactly would the VIP be located? Also whats the date and time would be for your
VIP room if i am able to actually get in?

Hydro ~

In which he answered ...

Quote
Hydro,

Yes, that's where the EA booth is. You should receive an email at some point with an invitation to our demo. Looks like there's not much we can do about getting you into the show, like I said we have no control over that. You might ask Steve if he has any ideas about how to get a pass.

-Will

In the meantime before he replied back i sent an e-mail to Gaming Steve looking for help. Which said ...

Quote
Hi Steve,

Plz do not tell people yet but Will Wright e-mailed me back and said i could come to his VIP Spore room at E3. However he ran out of badges to get in to E3. He is trying to figure out what to do. However I was wondering if you could help me any with this problem. I do not mind not seeing the show room. But I really want to get to his room and all too meet him like you did. Here is what he e-mailed me.

[all the e-mails i already posted]

So basically that's where we are right now. So close to meeting Will Wright but not having a badge. Plz help me out if you can. I really really want to be able to meet him!!

Todd (aka Hydro) ~
hydro.mancer@verizon.net

In which he responded back ...

Quote
Hey man:

Well, I don't know what to tell you as getting into E3 is harder than getting into Harvard. I have friends who work at EA and Blizzard who have a hard time getting in. I don't have an extra badge nor could I manage to get one.

At this point the only way you will probably get into the show is to simply register and pay for the conference. That will definately get you in, but you will have to pay for the full conference which is a couple of hundred dollars. Otherwise I really don't know what to tell you. Perhaps you might be able to get someone else's badge by Friday as a lot of people leave on Thursday.

Are you in the LA area? That will be a big help at least, if you are here there is a chance that you can take someone's badge after they leave on Thursday.

In which i went and explained what I thought my choices were to him ...

Quote
Yes i live in the LA area (Torrance). I currently have a few plans of what i can do, since i do not have the cash to do it. The first plan was ask you, the other was RealmRPGer thought about not going but bought a ticket. But he is still on the ropes on that one. I also have a friend who use to work at Square Enix and will let me use her badge if it is just for a tiny bit to visit Will Wright. However if i can borrow yours or someone else's you know in the buss just for that breef time to see Will that would be even better. Cause honestly i was planning not going because the rest is not really of interest to me. I mean even Will Wright's speech i knew would be covered by you. Basically the only reason i am dying to go is to meet Will Wright (and his VIP room).

Now lets say something works out where i get your badge, my friends badge or someone else badge, do you think i will have a problem getting in. Or even worse get in and then be stopped at the VIP area where i am on the VIP list but my badge doesn't match the name on the VIP list?

Also I do not know what day Will would even want to see me.

IF none of that works my other back up plan is just to announce it on the Spore forum and see if anyone out there can help me out.

What do you think?

Hydro ~

So now that you know what i know it looks like my choices are ...

1. Will Wright Comes up with a badge out of nowhere.
2. Gaming Steve Comes up with a badge out of nowhere.
3. RealmRPGer gives up his badge so i can see Will Wright but risk having my VIP and E3 badges have not the same name on them.
3. My friend from Square Enix gives up her badge for a little bit so i can see Will Wright but risk having my VIP and E3 badges have not the same name on them.
4. I buy the expensive ticket and be so poor (possibly not even being able to afford Spore when it comes out).
5. Someone on the forum comes up with an idea.

So I am so desperate i am down to choice #5. Telling you all because as of now its doesn't make a difference. Cause if i can't get in then i cannot see Will Wright anywho no matter if I am on the VIP list. And i was already set not to go. But if it were not for the VIP thing then I would not be so desperate to go. I just wish i could find out a way where i could meet him and heck even skip the show room and stuff.

Plz somone help.

I am in college and the problem is more of the money going for classes and books and stuff. As for parents help, they have already helped so much with my schooling.

but maybe u can convince your parents that this is a study trip and then they might help you out.  You are learning about gaming are you?  So this can be like a gaming exercise and study trip and tell your parents that its a once in a life time opportunity for you, and it will help you gain contacts and employment for your future prospects.
Maybe u can take a small loan out and use it to pay for a badge, then u would hav to pay it back..hehe??

Anyways Hydro, best of luck with it, and hope that you do get a badge.  I am envious..hehehe

getting into e3 isn't too hard, if you have even moderate connections. i went in 2003, sure, nothing big was really announced then, but i went. how? i was in college, i was artistic. some friends of mine in computer science were starting a game development club, they needed artists as they couldn't really do art to save themselves...

so what happened? a nearby company that develops games acquired some passes. they wondered if anyone in the game development club wanted to go. i jumped at the chance and went. it got me the chance to play some games before most people ever had. it got me some sweet junk that is probably mostly in the trash now (i still have my wind waker link lapel pin from nintendo!). and it made me realize how awesome a tradeshow can actually be.

hydro, i have no way to help you get to e3, but if you can (and most likey you would have had a ticket--or the rights to it--months ago) you should go. not just for spore, or to see will wright. but because every gamer should try to get to e3. too bad the regular crowd can't go. it's only for developers, businessmen, c-list celebrities, and those who magically find their way in.  good luck!

p.s. if you do go, make sure you hit up bigger venues first. i know nintendo gave out GBAs when i went. i'm certain both big portables will be handed out to lucky winners. so enjoy will wright's chat, but enjoy actually getting swag.

;) Wow Hydromancer, hope it comes together for you! Meeting Mr. Wright himself, seeing all the Spore news ages before it comes out, not to mention the rest of E3 too.....

I do think that, short of a big gambling win (and don't even try it, gambling is a slippery slope lol), your best possible bet would be to fork out the bread. It's like my fellow postmates have already said......chances are you will NOT get this opportunity again. They're going to be unveiling some huge things at E3 in relation to Spore this year, and you'd see them all first, and maybe.......even PLAY it and make a trust Naucen in the Creature Editor at last!  ;D

Plus, you could possibly meet GamingSteve himself too.  8)

So......go for it, don't give up hope, fate has offered you a lifeline so be thankful, grab it with both hands and take it. I mean, if you go, who knows where it might lead? The more renown you're gaining as 'the fan who featured in Will Wright's talk' and suchlike, the more likely it is that things will snowball and before you know it you might be working in the gaming industry itself somehow. You never know, stranger things have happened.

But even if that's not the case, many of we mere mortals would quite happily stick our elderly relatives on eBay for a chance to visit E3, especially this year of all years with Spore and next-gen consoles to be thinking about.

Beg, steal or borrow (well, maybe not steal because stealing is naughty), pony up the coinage, go to E3, have the time of your life and never look back.  ;) To miss this opportunity would be a true crime, and from a long-shot request you've ended up in a strong position.

Do it for us and for the Nauceans, Hydro!  ;D
If you peruse my things, you get POINTS!
http://www.spore.com/view/profile/Beatnuki

Only trouble is, they're Whose Line Is It Anyway points, which are infamously not worth anything.

Well, I don't know exactly how legal this is, how much chance you're getting, and if Will is going to like this (so you should ofcourse tell everything to Will), but...

Maybe you could ask around a bit at game review/preview websites/magazines, and ask them if they've got someone at the Spore VIP room. If they don't, tell them that you're allowed to go in there, but you ain't got an E3 badge. Ask them if they could maybe give you one somehow, and in return you'd write something up for them (and I mean something good and big, not something small. You could ask Steve if he helps you out a bit with this, but ofcourse I don't know the legalese of this all)...

But at all costs, talk with Will about your plans, and give him any news about your progress.. Maybe, if you're lucky, you could ask Will for some oldish but new concept art to give to the game website/magazine, so you have better luck at a deal with them.

However, again, I have no idea if this plan could work out or not, and you should probably ask Will or Steve if this is possible or not.. They know more about E3 than I do (I know... well.. zero about it... really.. :P)

Best of luck to you... And have fun once you're allowed in.. :)

Hmm.. When did you send your first PM about that to him? If it's like 3 months ago or something, then you could've started saving up money at that time.

P.S.: Does Will mean a playable demo of Spore?

No i e-mailed will only on the 23rd. I was not expecting him even relpying. I did it becuase my freind at square enix said she was going and said i should try asking him. I mean what could it hurt?

Well, I don't know exactly how legal this is, how much chance you're getting, and if Will is going to like this (so you should ofcourse tell everything to Will), but...

Ok like i said i have asked both Will And Steve and both have no more badges. Course its really too bad the Spore staff thats there can't just like grab me from outside and bring me in. Cuase as much as i love E3 meeting Will Wright trumps anything E3 can dish out.

Also i am sure somone at Maxis is veiwing the form and have seen this just becuse of the title of the topic. As well as Will aready know the situation.

Thanks to all who have posted so far. I think i am going to sleep on all this before i fork out any dough.

Great opportunity you've got there, it does seem a shame to waste it. I'd definately like to go to E3 one year, though, living in the UK, it would end up being my annual holiday (vacation :P), which I haven't been able to afford for a couple of years as it is! I work, but my job isn't great, and I'm on a low wage (could be worse, I could work at McDonalds).

Unfortunately it looks like its a bit short notice for anyone to sort something out for you. I wish you luck though, sorry I couldn't help more dude.

Hydro, get yourself a paypal account and start a, "send Hydromacerx to E3" thread.  I mean, if you only need a couple hundred bucks, you might just get enough donations from the the communit to send you.

*shrug*

I do know someone that is going to E3, but I don't think his company has spare invites they could give out... and I don't think he'd be willing to part with his. :p

Do the above and try to get people to give you money through paypal, it's one of your best bets.

Also, do something outrageously difficult to get people to give you money, like a sponsored silence for a week or something like that. I usually find that it's good for fifty quid.

Other than that you're probably looking at borrowing the cash from someone. Do you know anyone who'd be prepared to lend you say $100?  You'd pay them back in good time, but in the meantime you could do other things to make money. In that case you're loking at  a more long-term solution, which hopefully will be easier than trying to raise that money before E3.

Simply put you're going to have to use more than one source of cash. My best advice to you is to turn your short-term cash shortage into a long-term one, so you get more time to raise money after E3.
