Behold! SBD's creature: the Dreksesthai!
« on: April 27, 2006, 04:42:34 am »
i was inspired by the tau, that lizard guy from jedi outcast, gorillas and myself. anyway i'll describe them for you, as i haven't drawn a picture.

Appearance
the adult male of the species is roughly 6ft tall on average, but can be up to 7ft. like a gorilla, they have very dark grey skin and are covered in black fur, exept for their chest and face, and they have a reptile-like head. they have a huminoid body (i'm not very imaginative), with two large digits on each hand, and an oposable thumb, with an extremely hard ivory-like substance forming a blunt claw at the end of each digit, which is infact fused to the bone inside the hand. the foot is similar; but the two toes have fused, and the third is pointed backwards for stabilization. they have a small, almost non-existant tale which covers that certain oricafe where the sun don't shine.

Biology
the creature is an omnivore, and eats a balance of both plants and animals. reproduction occurs in the same way as humans(can't remember what it's called) with gestation taking 10 months. they have an extremely tough immune system, and can take alot of punishment before they are in trouble. sense and intelligence-wise they are on par with humans. despite their seemingly predatorial make-up, they are quite passive unless provoked, or decide that there is a good enough reason to fight, in which case their martial prowess is beyond compare.

Religion
the Dreksesthai believe in three main gods: Nihilnon- creator of the universe, master of time and space; Creo- the giver of all life; and Abrogo- the bringer of death, lord of decay and destruction. there are also several other, lesser gods devoted to things within these catagories, such as gods devoted to the seasons, health, war etc. this religion is split into two main sects: the Caterva sect and the Dividere sect. followers of Caterva believe that each of these gods is an indivdual, and that they form a hierachy of gods under the guidance of Nihilnon. the followers of Dividere believe that each of these gods represent a different aspect of the one god Nihilnon, and Nihilnon is the one true God. Caterva is the dominant sect, with roughly 65% of the Drehsesthai population as followers, however this varies from world to world. while their have been a couple of holy wars, the two sects respect and are at peace with each other, and it is common for followers of the differing sects to have freindly debates over their religion.

Goverment
before the Dreksesthai reached a space faring age, the world, known as Ilia, was under the rule of the Regnator, or emperor. each of the Dreksesthai states was under the a Rector, or governor. the Rectors also formed a council of advisors to the Regnator, and each Rector was assigned a role, such as minister for defence, agriculture etc. once the Dreksesthai colonised the planets of their solar system, the council of Rectors was disbanded and replaced with a group of about a dozen advisors, but the Rectors still governed the states on Ilia. the Dreksesthai planets are under control of a Erus, or lord. these planets are also divided into states, and each state is  also controlled by a Rector, who like the Rectors of old, advise the Erus.

Homeworld
the homeworld of the Dreksesthai is known as Ilia. the planet is not unlike earth, albeit larger and farther from the system's sun. the planet has three continents: Laris, the continent on which the Dreksesthai originated; Artus, the smallest of the continents; and Anulus, which is in the rough form of a capital G.  Ilia also has several small islands, roughly the size of Britain. the gravity on Ilia the same as that of earth, even though it is bigger. this is becuase the core is far lighter then the core of earth, being made up of mostly aluminium, with some iron and other elements. becuase of it's difference from the sun, the planet has little jungle or rainforest, and steppes are far more common then deserts.

Then why not name them Dreksesthai, the ancient greek word for dragon. It literally means "The Seeing One".
Please, lets not bring religion into this...

here's a rough timeline of  Dreksesthai evolution:

60MYA: the original ancestors of the current species appears

60-35MYA: the 'monkey-dog' develops, an animal that runs around on all fours, but thanks to opposable toes and a long monkey like tail, they are able to climb trees. it has large, dog like ears, dark brown fur and lives of nuts, berries, and birds and small animals. it is roughly a metre long, excluding it's tail.

30-5MYA: the species doubles in size, becomes far more intelligent, and (in packs) stalks and preys on large animals many times its size. The tail shortens as the species don't use trees as much.

5MYA: the species begins to stand on two feat, allowing it's upper limbs to better manipulate its surroundings

5MYA to 150TYA: the species goes under a series of refinments, such as losing the dog ears, the feet forming etc, until the current species is formed.

The Secret History of the Dreksesthai (i'm also a bit of a mongol fan)

The First Age
roughly 150K years after achieving sentience, all three continents and most islands were populated by the Dreksesthai. the people civilization was split up into hundreds of small states. each state would have one or two cities and several villages, but some of the larger states had 3 or even four 4 cities. each state was completely independent, and had enough resources to sustain itself, but trade very important between the states. becuase of the close boarders, skirmishes were common but major changes of land were rare. on Laris, the biggest states were Bellator, in the north, and Sapientia, in the south. Bellator were agressive and had a powerful army, which consisted of mainly footmen and siege engines, but lacked many ranged troops or mounted warriors. Saipentia was roughly the same size as Bellator, but its army was numerically inferior. it did, however, have two advantages. the first was it had a slighty more varied army: it had skilled ranged soldiers, taken from the hunting villages that were situated the continent's southern foresty areas. It also had plentiful cavalry units, because good trade and relation with several states to the north-west. Its second adantage was perhaps the most important: Saipentia was great centre of knowledge and science. Saipentia was the
The leader of Bellator, Belua, was a man hungry for power. his army was fed and equiped by states to its north, which Belua bullied into unfair trade deals. the whole of Ilia knew it was a matter of time before Bellator invaded these states, but no-one could say when. Saipentia was also buzzing with exitment. it seemed the state's wise men and scholars were on the verge of perfecting a strange substance, a powder, that if touched with flame, would explode.
Bellator soon invaded the northen states, which were powereless to stop the attack. while Saipentia obviously condemed the attack, they were in no position to invade and the population of the conquered were not threatened. But this was not enough for Belua, and he went on to conquer several other surrounding states. Bellator's ground forces, filled with the adreneline of victory, r**ed and pilliged and murdered their way through the states. this action outraged Sapentia, and their leader,Cordatus, not only because of the of the harm to the population, but because it seemed that Belua thought himself invincible, and that another expansion would mean that he probably would be. An envoy from Sapentia was sent to Bellator, who's mission was to ensure that Belua would agree not to expand again. Belua sighned to agreement (is this starting to sound familiar?) and it appeard that Laris was safe.
But it was not to be. Belua again expanded his terrirories, enslaved or killed the conquered populations and plundered their tresuried and war machines for themselves. this was the final straw for Sapentia. the state, and her surrounding states allied together to ensure that Belua be stopped. While to armies of Bellator marched south, Sapentia and her allies prepared. the surrounding states put forth their troops under the command of the Saipentien military commander, Aequitas. he also controlled the mighty Saipentien archers, and mounted troops. he also had access to the strange new explosive, and weapons utilising it are already being built.
the mounted warriors left the alliance and traveled up the west of the continent, hoping to out manuvure the opposition; while the foot soldiers marched due north, hoping to stop the marauding Bellatorians in their tracks. the mounted warriors reached the walls of the Bellatorian capital. while at first it seemed like a hopeless, but the first flaw of Bellatorian tactics was soon revield. only the front of the city was fortified, as Belua thought that no army would ever get past his. half the force stayed to draw out the force guarding the town, while the others snuck around the back, to destroy the the Bellatorian fighting capability, and then go on to attack the gaurding force from behind. the capital was in ruins and a significant part of the opposition was killed. but an army was still marching towards Sapentia, and they were destroying all in their path.
the Bellatorian army had left nothing standing behind them. no state in their path was saved, and nearly a quarter of the Dreksesthai on Laris were killed. the Sapentian army met the Bellatorians, and their leader rougly two thirds of the way down the continent, just south of a small mountain range. the two armies clashed, and througout the course of the battle, the Sapentians and their allies were nearly completely destroyed. but as the day was ending, a lone figure appeared on the top of the foothills, surrounded in an aura of light from the setting sun. dozens of odd machines appeared on either of him. the Saipentians and their allies had retreated regrouped in order to make a last stand against the Bellatorian horde, who had no sense of formation. the lone fiqure drew his sword, pointed towards the mangle of enemy soldiers and siege engines, and roared a single word: BARITUS! as if a single, monsterous beast, the Sapentian gunpowder war machines sent lead balls and crude bombs hurtiling through the sky, and death rained down on the Bellatorians. inspired by their brethren's terrifying new weapons, the Sapentians charged into the disarrayed enemy, and destroyed them utterly.
in the days that followed, it was desided amoungst the states of Laris that the dreksesthai should unite as a whole, to stop a war like this ever happening again. it was also decided that because dreksesthai had never before died in such numbers, and that the unification was such an important event, that a new calendar would be created, with the following year being year 1.

The Second Age
After the defeat of Bellator, the nation-states of Laris united as one nation and was divided into a northen and southen state. A under the guidance of Cordatus, the great minds from around the continent gathered in Sapentia and formed a university. several of the western states were home to highly adept astronomers. they travelled to Sapentia and shared their expertise, and soon the Dreksesthai could safely travel the seas. before 50bu (Battle of Unity) sea travel was risky at best. they had no way to know for sure which direction they were going and shiprecks were common. despite this, word of the unification spread, and support gathered. a few coastal states in western Anulus united. once  sea travel improved greatly in 50bu, this small state became a base of operations for the unification of Anulus. Laris showed of her technologies, and more states saw the great benifits of unification. their populations also saw the peace that came with it, and were determined to stop the frequent violence on the borders.
most of Anulus joined Laris in unification, but a larger state and her eastern allies didn't want to give up their independence. a war insued, but the allied states were quickly swept aside. Eventually Anulus was also united under one banner, and divided into two states.
Only Artus remained, to the west of Laris, but in the face of massive pressure from the united Dreksesthai and their own populus, the states on Artus soon capitulated. most of the islands were un-inhabited, or home to primitive savages, so these islands were also settled.
By 160bu, all of Ilia was united under a single banner. Although Cordatus died at 130 years of age in 80bu, his legacy lives on to current day Ilia and he is celebrated as the father of the united Dreksesthai civilization.

Only one age to go. the third age will basicaly be from where i left of to the present day Dreksesthai, an advanced, space-fairing nation.
