i just saw Silent Hill
« on: April 25, 2006, 02:33:15 am »
ohhhhh what a great movie i loved it!
its amazing how close they kept it to the game!
even the camera angles! and the music was awsome just like in the game! its probably the most horrific movie i have ever seen also. i was scared when i knew bad things where about to happen cause when they do there really BAD! i loved every second though great movie. deffinatly go see it in theaters, for the big screen and awsome sound!
also i had a wonderfull girl with me that i adore and that made the move that much better  ;D

however, i have to say it is very disturbing, she was covering her eyes and even
i was cowering during some parts haha, and i'm not talking about things that
just pop up like in every other horror movie, i mean stuff where your
just sitting there going "is this really happening" scary stuff

yes the scene with the nurses is also freaky. i dont want to give away any of the scary
sequences as there all very neatly done but i will tell you about the nurse part if you
wish to read farther, its not a plot spoiler just something you might want to see for yourself

**SPOILER**

the nurses start slitting each others throats wide open its crazy.

i'm not sure what people nagging about, but it stays so close to the games
that if your a fan your probably gonna love it. i got a compleatly diffrent
experience then the girl i was with. she really didnt know what
was going on while i had somewhat of an idea. no to mention
i knew when things where gonna happen. the game most closely
follows Silent Hill 1 and 2. the camera angles when there walking
are just like in the game haha. the music is straight out of the game
pretty much, and sound effects are really great. the visuals
are awsome, when pyramid head head makes his appearance its
scary for sure! all the monsters are from the game also no made up ones.
i really cant find anything bad about it, its very entertaining

I saw it tonight and I, for one, had a blast.  It was disturbing in all the right ways (if that makes any sense).  It wasn't 'OMFG' disturbing like you wanted to go kill yourself afterwards (a la Saw).  All the while, it wasn't shock value crap either.  It was more like "Holy crap... I am SO glad I'm not in that world."  You can detach yourself from it... disturbing but in more of a spectator way.

Goods:
Brilliant visuals and audio... truly the Silent hill series brought to life (most like Silent Hill 3).  Sounds that remained ambient in the 'dark world' really set the atmosphere.
Good story... IF you use the games merely as a premise, the movie takes the imaginary world in its own direction.  It's one of those that will make you think just a little bit before you sleep that night (if you sleep that night).

Bad:
LONG and drawn out.  That's okay if you have a good attention span, but bad if you're ADD like my buddy who kept nodding off.
If you're expecting a recap of the previous Silent Hill games, you won't find it.  It's similar on the most basic grounds.

My thoughts:
Despite the length of the movie, I think the dark world should have been explored more or the movie should have been cut down in length.  The dark world is fascinating... terrifying.  The cues to bring about the transformation from normal to dark were ominous and the conversion itself was like the world was ripping it's soul away to expose the rotting flesh beneath (and that's the way it looks, too).  In the movie, the protagonist sought to avoid and flee from it.  She only elected to travel into it once.

I would have liked to see more suspense in the dark world instead of the immediate horrors presented.  Seeing the protagonist venture through this world, knowing what may be around the next corner would have captured the essence of the game series.  Instead, she's immediately assaulted (in all cases) in the dark world, and the movie does not let the audience take a breather to see it for more than a few seconds.

To that extent, the plot drags on then instantly kicks into fifth gear, telling me that there may be a section missing from the movie.  All of a sudden, things just go crazy and you're taken right to the climax (plus a few minutes of the protagonist learning about the history of the town).  It's like going from sipping a beer to funneling 6 cans at once.  I certainly would have preferred a more linear escalation of the plot... growing to fruition, much like the games themselves.

The ending is hollow given that the general premise has been repeated time and time again.  It's a neat twist, but makes for a weak ending to a spectacular thrill ride.  They should have gone one way or another... more survival horror or a more poignant ending.

But, in the end, it's one of the best game-to-film adaptations.  It certainly outdoes the abysmal Doom and pretty much any other one out there.  It's one of the few that can stand on it's own two feet and will probably earn a spot in the few DVD's I actually purchase.  It's not a classic, but it's a trip I'll want to watch a few more times to experience the dread induced by that spectacular 'dark world.'

This is one of those movies everyone seems to hate but I love. I had a blast.

Acting was stilted occasionally and dialogue got a bit corny now and then, but the movie overall was quite an experience, and far, far deeper than anyone seems to give it credit for.

I went and saw SH last night and I really enjoyed it. I knew it was a game going in and it played through like a game, but you probably wouldn't know it if you weren't a gamer.

I agree with Tr0n about many parts of the movie. I hope the DVD has the stuff from the 'cutting room floor'.

There is a big story to tell and if you do no pay attention to the movie you'll miss a lot of it. I do not think that you could have really removed anything from the movie, but an additional 15-30 minutes for telling the story would have been nice.

This movie has atmosphere! The filmography deserves an award in my opinion. To see it out of a theater is going to cause you to loose some of the mood. It needs to be watched in a dark quiet room.

There are a couple plot holes that I might have missed or they botched. Mainly in the timing for things, but I hope the DVD will sort it out. I'll be purchasing it.

The initial cut of the film was over 210 minutes. Tristar made Christophe Gans cut it down to the 125 minute run time we have now.

Then I can only hope the DVD is the full length. The more I think about the movie the more I want to see if again (which is rare for me)

Wow, that was a fantastic movie. I mean, yeah I've played the games, but I'm no fanboy.

Altogether I would say as a stand-alone horror, it was great. As others have said, with a the extra 30 or more minutes from an uncut edition would help, but I think it has a great story as is. It helps if you've played the games, but it is not a pre-requisite at all. My non-gaming friends got it just fine, and were of course very intrigued.

Whew, good ending too.

Wow, this makes me realize how long it's been since I was an active user here.

Sadly, the DVD doesn't have anything extra added back from the story, but it was fun to watch again.

I saw Silent Hill sitting next to a creepy retarded guy who kept gasping for breath, shreiking, and standing up and touching himself. So I leaned over and said, "Micheal Jackson? Is that you?" But no, it really was a just some random retarded guy, and for the entire movie he was creeping me out.

Needless to say, fun times.

A bum what? I thought Pyramid Head was really cool, now what did I miss?

Good movie by the way. Suspenseful and I, at least, couldn't see things coming.
