Tube creatures?
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:19:07 am »
I'm worried that we'll only be able to make creatures that look like tubes. If you look at the willosaur, he's just a tube that tapers, perfectly circular all around (with different diameters, but still). Look at your own chest, it's like a flattened tube. And the hoppies and splodeys weren't any better, they were just too small/ too spherical to notice this. Do you think that the game will be able to allow us to change the basic shape of the torso, and how would this tool work?

Also, what about having animals that sharply taper? What if you want to simulate a segmented body, but you can't because of the fluid way the game makes the torso when you adjust the size of a rib bone? It changes all the rib bones around it, and through the whole body, to make it look fluid.

that's a good question.  I hope we can specify tube limbs and cube limbs.

Cubes would be cool, too. But I'm talking about making creatures that aren't made of perfect circles. Like I said before, humans have more of a flat circle, but the creature editor in the GDC '05 presentation (3:30) didn't look like you had the option to change proportions or shape of the torso or limbs at all, only the size.

Look at all the example creatures. Many of them don't have perfect circles.

I just rewatched that part, it looked like all of them were made of circles. Which ones weren't?

EDIT: Besides the appendages, things like graspers and stuff. Their limbs and bodies are made up of circles

Off the top of my head, what about Dilemma?

Here's some screenies I pulled off of the gameplay video, and made into a slideshow because it looked like a cool feature ;D
That slideshow sucks, here's the pics.

The basic shape of Dilemma is a folded tube. Basically, if you were to take a cross section of any of the creatures there, it would look like this:

The red and green represent blood and guts.

If you were to take a cross section of my torso, it would look more like this:

I would be disappointed if we could only make circle bodies.

Hmm, well my bad - I was just going from memory.

It appears that all the creatures we have pictures for seem to be from an early incarnation of the editor. They might have fixed this by now - hopefully. It would be nice to be able to affect the morphology of the creature in various different ways which aren't necessarily fluidic.

In reality, there are very few, if any, sharp edged life forms. Life is inherently curved, why? Because it's more efficient.

But here's a creature that's kindof what you want:

It is good that creatures are by default symmetrical and round shaped, because 99% of the creatures on earth are. But maybe could they have an advanced option that deactivates auto symmetry and round shapes. We have seen buildings with sharp shapes,so the editor is capable of handling it.

Right. Question answered. Thanks

But anyway, I was just talking about not being a perfect circle, where the the radius is always equal to 1x. I wanted something that isn't a perfect circle, but is still rounded. But that video shows what I wanted to see, thanks.

And about the sharply tapering thing, I meant like this:

yea np.

But i see what you're saying. Based on what we've seen, it looks like only exterior features (claws, hook, jaws, etc.) will be sharp at the ends. Just think of it as mega-anti-aliasing, lol.

Of course, we've only seen a handful of models, those being from last year, so I'm sure there will be much greater variety.

We really have no idea wat Spore is going to be like. Most of the information we have comes from a one hour presentation at a European game develepor's convention. Once again, I must point towards the magic sig.

There's promo shots around where the creatures are textured. We can see an insect like creature which is largely flat on the bottom and triangular prism in shape (although obviously still rounded) and ribbed.

There's a spider like creature, not the one from the video, that a 3 sectional like body with shape indentation :\

I forgot about the magic picture:

That big gorilla on the right answers both my questions. His body isn't a tube and his arms are somewhat segmented. His pecs even stick out a lot (with nipples!), That's something else I was wondering about. Not the nipples, the slight protuberances like pecs and such.

This picture also lays fears to rest:

Sorry to waste everyone's time  :-\
