Spore may not be called "spore" after all...
« on: May 14, 2005, 09:26:59 am »
but rather, SimSpore..

according to the news at http://sporeworld.net

"Whois.net searches for spore reveal that EA games have purchsed the domain name simspore.com"

I kinda hope it will be called SimSpore, putting "sim" on the front of everything is like Will's signature :)

On the other hand this could mean nothing at all.  ???

It could be frankie. It could be very fresh and clean. It could be a balloon.

I'd actually rather it wasn't called simspore. what about www.spore.com? It says future website of spore at the top.
What meme is relevant right now? Look, just imagine I'm riffing on that. Updating signatures is exhausting.

Interesting find! I did a WHOIS on spore.com a couple of times since the GDC and it is registred to someone from Singapore. The data is from juli 2004 but I think it is updated when there is something to update.

SimSpore sounds good, and it has the Will Wright sign :)

I would like SimSpore just because it's unmistakably a "Will Wright" production.  Though it doesn't make much sense, because you don't really simulate a Spore.  SimTime or SimUniverse, maybe.  Either way, as long as I know what hte game is, I'm buyin' it!

The company either reserved a few domains ahead of time before the name was created so some goofball didn't take it.  Or some goofball already took domains that people were bound to try to exploit somehow.

Edit: Take a game like The Sims for example...The domain http://thesims.com REDIRECTS to http://thesims.ea.com so if the game was called Spore it would be logical to assume http://spore.ea.com would exist...but of course EA wouldn't create a subdomain for the game yet- they probably didn't even want this much information about the game to be released yet (ex The XBox 360 Pre-E3 Media Whore Tease).

I say: WHO CARES

Yeah but as thesims.com redirects to thesims.ea.com they would register Spore's own domain name. But as I posted in my website EA registered sporeuniverse.com too, that's why I had to register my site to sporeuniverse.net. Perhaps they are doing an expansion pack called Spore Universe.  :D Hope not as then EA would surely force me to change my site's name.  ;)

They might just be buying the domain so that nobody gets it and makes it a porn site or something, like the whitehouse.com affair.

Spore simply doesn't convey anything at all about the game. It would detract from it, really. Changing it to use his trademark word would be far more intelligent and beneficial.

Why would it do that? I think it sounds perfect. The definitian of spore:
1. A small, usually single-celled reproductive body that is highly resistant to desiccation and heat and is capable of growing into a new organism.

True it is mostly occuring in plants, but I think it applies here very well.

I do, on the otherhand, understand why it might be changed to SimSpore. Marketing for one thing.

...its not rocket science.

Adding Sim at the start of Spore isn't going to enlighten anyone who doesnt allready know what spores are any further anyway.

Not rocket science, but truly, how many people know the proper definition of spore? I dare you to ask your family what it means. I imagine they might get a portion of it right, but they certainly won't get the part that matters.

Spore is simply a ridiculous name for it and it will detract from the sales.

Spore is more inviting than Final Fantasy though.  FF sounds dumb if you think about it, it isn't relavent at all to the story.  It just shows that games will sell good as long as it gets good press coverage and advertising.

Take a game though like Katamari Damacy.  The title wasn't even translated to English because the author didn't want to compromise his artistic vision.  The game doesn't even have a compelling story and it still became a wild success.  Game makers should worry less about sales figures and focus on creating a wonderful game.

I'd rather make a great product than a great selling product.  There's honor in that.

And you can have both at the same time. You guys act like they're exclusive to each other.

If they have to use cheap marketing tactics to get it across, so be it, I would do it as well.

God of War was an awesome game and sold really well without using cheap tactics.  Countless other games can basically sell off of their reputation alone and coverage received by press.

And you have games like GTA, which sell like crazy and are certainly good games. Sometimes you CAN have your cake and eat it, too; you just have to kill a lot of old ladies with your uzi.

Sorry, I was simply demonstrating that a game can be both popular and good; that they're not mutually exclusive.

Spore is fine. SimSpore is not quite as good.

My opinion.

Marketing will always win out :/
