Interesting DS game release on April 25th
« on: April 16, 2006, 03:01:54 pm »
The games called LostMagic. Its an RPG where you play as a young spellcaster who has to save the world. (Not to origonal a story line I know) The interesting thing is that the battles are in real time and the spells are cast with the stylis. (think Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow spellcast system) You can also capture monsters too fight along side of you. Finaly it is Wi/Fi enabled, that means 2 players can battle each other without needing a friend code. The game looks promising and I am looking into it.

I didn't take much interest when they announced the WiFi stuff in it, but it actually looks like a good game. I'd pick it up if the DS wasn't draining all of my money

Well, Iv played the game for several hours now. I would say it takes 30-40min for the story too warm up, and the game itself is quite fun. I like the Wi-fi and its very challenging too see what other people use too beat up on your strategy.Im not fond of the time limits on each mission because it makes it more difficult too test out new spells... And I dont like how if the momster you command run into a tree, they will simply walk into it until you give it a new order. But the magic casting system is very fun andá 400 spells means there is always somthing new too try. The only problem is with the water spell which looks like an S and the dark spell that looks like a ?.. My handwriting is bad and the game often confuses the too if i rush. But minor complaints aside, this game is very fun. 8.5/ 10 is what I give it thus far.but then again i still need to unlock about 1/3 of the game at least

i picked this up a couple days ago. it's a fun game.

like bwl2 said, the controls could be a bit better, but it's not that horrible. some have complained that the power button is too close to the d-pad, and it's times like this i'm happy i'm a lefty! the controls flip and you move about the map with the four buttons, while holding your stylus in your left hand. ~_^

for a game that promotes the use of the stylus, they do it quite well. sure, the drawing of some spells is "tricky" at first, but you get the hang of it. the thing that i don't like about it is that before every battle there is a little cutscene. you get to watch some chatter go on, it's nice... at first. but if you loose a battle (and these are surprisingly more challenging than i thought they'd be) then you have to watch them again, and again, and again as you try out more and more tactics.
maybe i'm still too low of a level. that happens to me in rpgs, i get more interested in the story-line and not the leveling up. but this one doesn't give much in the way of opportunites to level. you kinda' only have the missions you can do.

i like it, but i'm still quite new to it. i've only just started the story it feels, and i don't think my level six guy is anything to tout about.

This was one of my first games I got for the DS (The Lite was my first DS) and I agree that it is a good game. It is flawed however. The biggest problem IMHO is the completely unnecessary and incredably frustrating time limit for each level. I almost feel as if someone decided along the way that it was necessary to make one change that would take what would have been a great game and turn it into an OK game. In a game about tactics and exploring different magical spells that horrid time limit becomes the game's Achilles heel.

The time limits do hurt the game and force you to play longer simply to try out the spells, and do what you want to do. As a rule of thumb, I would say time limits kill games.

The time limit has to be one of the worst parts of the game, the actuall spell casting system is pretty good, but it would have been better if you could move after drawing the spell, but before casting, I've lost count of the number of times a monster has wandered out of attack range while I'm drawing a particaullarly tricky rune, also the initial level, right after the training ones, are pretty hard, as you have no where to level up. A scalable difficulty setting sould have been a good addition, but it is clever how you can capture monsters and get the to fight for you.
