My first creature: The Slugfly
« on: April 13, 2006, 06:51:41 am »
I love bugs...  so here I give you the greatest pseudo-insect, the Slugfly.

Social structure:  Slugflies are a social insect living under a queen as ants and bees do.  Their communities extend to several hundred in a single nest connected throughout fields to between 5 and 20 genetically related nests.  The nests are highly complex structures.  They consist mostly of large empty chambers with random tunnels burrowing out into the nest shell.  The tunnels serve as hatcheries and food storage, but most of the tunnels lead to dead ends or out through the shell.  The Slugflies don't use these as entrances and exits since they move so slowly on land, rather they enter and exit through large holes near the base of the nest.  These dead end tunnels and false exit tunnels are most likely the result of the toxic plants that Slugflies so often eat.

Lifestyle:  Slugflies are highly intelligent... well... for a bug. ;D  They are omnivores and savage hunters, but they spend much of their time eating toxic leaves and generally chilling out in the sun.  When not eating the toxic leaves they spend most of their time airborne because their lack of limbs makes escape or pursuit difficult to start from the ground.  They are expert fliers (if they haven't been eating the leaves) and can hover, reverse, change altitude and turn 180 degrees while moving.  Their tail holds a stinger which delivers a nerve toxin fueled by the leaves they dine on so often, and is lethal to most creatures.

When hunting the Slugflies travel in packs of 10 or 20 and ambush their target in a highly organized (via chemical messages) simultaneous attack.  When these attacks fail to kill within the first few seconds the prey is often lost, and the hunting party faces quick defeat or even death.  This is because the only valuable attack they have is in their tails which they use by lurching forward in a summersault which, if the tail doesn't connect, will carry them completely over and possibly result in them landing on the ground.  If they land they are defended only by the limited movements of their tail and the hard shell on their back.  If unimpeded it can take them several seconds to get airborne, if under attack becoming airborne can be very difficult indeed.

oooh  cool.   Well... perhaps we're related somewhere along the evolutionary chain.  :)   For the record the 'Slugfly' is about 4 or 5 years old ;)   Although in name only, in design not much older than a year or 2.
