Size of the Spore Galaxy (Warning, thar be math ahead)
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:57:32 pm »
In a previous thread, (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=3610.0), can't remember who said it, but it got me thinking.

How Big will one Spore Galaxy be?
Average Number of worlds
(Average number of worlds in a Planetary system)*(Number of Stars in the sector)*(% of systems that have planets)*(number of Sectors in the galaxy)
so W*S1*S2*S3
you could go further into worlds, adding factors like % of worlds with Civilization, life, or potential for life. So, lets plug some numbers.
5 planets/system*20%(planets that will harbor life)*40%(planets that harbor civilization)*30 stars per sector*75%(stars with planets)*10 sectors (extremely conservative) or 50 sectors=90 civilizations to conquer, 450 Civilizations to conquer.

Now I'm just pulling statistics out of my butt here, and this is a really simple equation (not taking into account probably higher affinity toward life and civilization in the Spore Galaxy, and filtering out of stars with nothing to contribute, i.e. no planets, and birth of new stars and death of old ones)

So basically, how big do you think?

Big enough.

The fact that everything can be proceduraly generated means that the galaxy could thereticaly have infinite size, although it wont; it will defently have thousands of solar systems, and also, every time you start a new game, a completly new galaxy /could/ thereticaly be created (allthough I don't know if this is how its going to work exactly)
Anyway you look at it, even if there were only solar systems in the "mere" (hah!) hundreds, it would provide an overwealming amount of content for a single person to ever even think of completly exploring.
The glass is not half full or half empty. It is both.

Are you factoring in the 50% or so of automatically uninhabitable and probably unterraformably gas giants?
Also, I think the galaxy will be as big as it need to be so that you never reach an 'edge'.

The galaxy has an edge, it's just really, really big.

In the real world, yes it does eventually end. But in Spore it might just keep making more stuff to fill the emtieness, so you can't actually reach an end or some sort.

There's a reputable theory that the very end of the universe is lined with a marshmallow barrier which makes it impossible to go any further.

There would be "tens, hundreds of thousands of worlds that the player can visit and interact with", according to WW.

Do you think Spore will get so full of creatures it will use up more than one Galaxy or do you think there will be multiple galaxies to travel to in the universe?

A galaxy has about a trillion or so stars, so planets should have about the same amount.

The spore galaxy won't have nearly as many people though. And didn't he zoom out far enough in the clip to see the entire thing?

What does that have to do with anything?

Just something to remember - in this game, there will be nubulas, where stars are created, as are planets to orbit the stars.
So, say you went to every single planet that was created in your galaxy when you firstloaded the game, by the time you've done that - there would be a tonne more stars and planets to visit...

Also, yeah, I think he did zoom out to see the whole thing at one point...

My sporepedia page:

I have over 50 creatures, I only upload my best so each of these should be good. All my creatures work ingame, and are beliveable.

Please take a look at my sporecast of the Flob species:

I'm sure those are for show. I meen, it's obviouse that there isn't just ONE galaxy, so there would have to be something in the background, or else it'd just look weird.
The chance of actually visiting said galaxys is slim at best. Nanoly so.

There's a reputable theory that the very end of the universe is lined with a marshmallow barrier which makes it impossible to go any further.
It's called the "Spyro the Dragon Theory"
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone elses opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." - Oscar Wilde

Yes, I am aware of the irony.
