$8 SPORE TALKS online! (Audio-Only)
« on: April 04, 2006, 04:24:35 pm »
http://store.cmpgame.com/category.php?cat=34&skin=gdcradio

I just randomly found this by going to http://www.gdctv.net/ and then the GDCRadio.net link on the right of the page.

These are all of the GDC talks in audio format, but it sort of sucks, being that they are $8 each!

Links to Spore talks are here:

ALL SPORE TALKS ARE NOW ONLINE!

Advanced Prototyping:
http://store.cmpgame.com/product.php?id=135&cat=

These are all audio-only. I'm guessing that the videos are next to go up... but how much will they cost? 0_o

Some sessions will be streamed flash video player with synchronized presentations while others will now only be available as paid MP4 downloads compatible with video iPods and PSPs.
Acording to this, /some/ of them /should/ be free... but the important question is... are the Spore ones going to be free?

You assume schools are actually interested in education and students' interests. Haven't you figured out by now they're mainly about training a horde of good little consumer-worker bees who don't question authority? There are plenty of TEACHERS who care about their kids -- the system does what it can to stifle them, though.

Heh, teachers interested in Spore; thats neat.

Id probably buy the spore talk one if I had my own credit card, or if my dads wasnt maxed out.
Although the biggest factor is that $8 is pretty hefty for an audio lecture, and that I'm cheap. XD

Of course we could all be like "OMG EMAIL ME IT IF U HAIVE IT! MY EMAIL IS.." ect. Probably not the best idea...

OMG PM ME IF YOU HAIVE IT!

Much better idea  :D

But seriously. Yeah, $8 is /really/ asking too much, I wouldnt mind listening to some of the other things on there too, but nothing (except mabye the spore talk) is worth $8 to me.

i would rather just wait to E3 and get more information than paying to watch the spore talks that didn't have a lot of information.  $8 is too much, and it's in US $$, so us aussies would have to pay more

OK, if you guys are whining about the fact that these talks cost $8 a pop, you really don't understand what a deal that is.

First off, this isn't entertainment, this is education, and education ain't cheap, if any of you are in college you should know.  The cheapest option to have been able to have gone to these talks was $895 for the last three days, which was about 16 lectures total.  Even taking $175 out, which was the cost of the Expo-only pass, and let's say about $30 for the free food, that comes out to about $43.12 USD a lecture to have gone in person.  Considering that a lot of the slides are available on the web for free anyways, you're getting these lectures for less than 1/5 the original cost.

If you're purely looking for info on the game, no, these aren't worth your time.  But if you're interested in game development, these aren't bad deals.
Looks like even I was being optimistic with a March 07 release date...

I agree with you completely, but like you said, we arnt (or um... most of us arnt...) in the mindset for education here, which is why everyone is complaining.

But theres probably a couple lectures besides the Spore talks that I wouldnt mind listening to, even paying for, purely for their educational value.

Also, they have lectures from GDC's in years past for only $6 each, including Wills talks from 2003 and 2004.  Who knows, maybe he was hinting at Spore in these all along.  They're probably really interesting regardless of their lack of Spore.

I teach games programming at highschool level and it is ALWAYS frustrating to fight with the draconian system they have put in place here.  IMO, games programming is on the cutting edge of programming in general and should be taught as early as possible, but the powers that be here say that students cannot handle writing games (even though I have evidence to contradict them)
Do you give your students extra credit if they buy Spore :P
I have used Sims 2 Body Shop to teach basic skinning and 3D modelling in the classroom so I don't see why I couldn't use Spore as an example of where games programming is progressing.  Obviously, students who owned Sims 2 were at an advantage ;D  If I ever use Spore, students who own it will be at an advantage as well.

Unfortunatly, not all of us (Like me) are able to buy these due to not having or being able to use a credit card  :(
We will have to live in a world without GDC 2006 Spore talks then (or for some, travel the path of piracy).

I can't wait untill I actualy can own my own credit card if not only for use on the internet.

would it be against the rules of this site to ask someone to host the audio or (even better) audio/video as a torrent?  I could guarantee that once I'm done downloading I would be forever seeding it.  Please keep in mind that although I only asked one question here, the real question ignores the first 10 words of the post...  ;D

I found the torrent, and downloaded some of it, but there are no seeders, and I cannot download it. I have resolved to trying to get my parents to use thier credit card(s) in the pursuit of these audio files. I don't think it will happen though.

if I'm downloading something and it shows as no sources, sometimes I do a search for that same file.  If you do an active search it's more thorough than a casual search done while it's downloading.  So after you search you won't need to click on any of the finds, but you can look back on your download page and you should see that it's caught a seeder.
