Ride of the Valkyries! It's impossible for me to listen to that song without it invoking mental images of mass destruction and mayhem. Explosions, bombs being dropped from planes and that sort of thing.
There is a method to my madness. That method is in and of itself quite mad, but it is method nonetheless.

L.O.T.R 2 OST - trailer song ( one of my favorite song )
Han Zimmer -  Glory ( don't remember the movie )

Edwin Starr - War
The Ride Of The Valkyries (great for war games with airplanes)

I used to blast these when I played Battlefield Vietnam. And the great thing about that game is that people can hear the music you play . I remember this one guy who played it's raining men when ever he dropped napalm. Good times

Mars, Bringer of War,  by Gustav Holst.  It's long,, but the beginning and ending are superb, and its one of my favorites.
Leave to a Thark his head and one hand and he may yet conquer.

Anything by Hans Zimmer. Especially the theme to Crimson Tide though. It rocks. Another obscure war song I really like is "Ricochet" by Bionic Jive.

Carmina Burana. Not Cramina Burana. That sounds like some old Russian name.  ;D

BTW, for heroic music try Finlandia by Jean Sibelius.

Go Finland!
Yes. Of course.

You're probably talking about Carl Orff

Ride of the Valkyries was already posted.. so I'll have to add: Try almost everything by Richard Wagner, his music is practically "bellum in musica" (yeah, this is probably horribly wrong, I don't speak Latin).

Other than that, try intro music from scandinavian Viking Metal bands. For example listen into Einherjer's "Blot"-Intro.
"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Battlefield Vietnam, i loved the music feature, playing songs like "You really Got Me Now," while flying into the enemy base in a jeep. Or "Ride of the Valkyries" In a Huey Gunship when you're about to capture the last enemy base, or playin "Fortunate Son" by CCR in Irving or Ia Drang (SP?) while flying a Huey Slick full of men into enemy territory, then it really feels like a Vietnam movie. Good times...good times...I loved that game, when i got BF2 i missed the music feature, so i played  music from my Windows Media Player playlist. Hair metal is great for the intense action of Karkand. Unfortunately its even better for sneaky enemies...so if have to keep it quieter when online, or turn it off completely.

wow i should stop before i get too far off subject...anyway like someone else said (was it LadyM?) the first thing that popped into my head was the song titled "War" another one from BFV.  :)

(edit- just thought of this, is Edwin Starr related to Ringo Starr of the Beatles?)

There are a lot of great 19th century war songs, I especially like Battle Hymn of the Republic and Die Wacht am Rhein   (The Watch on the Rhine)
Quote
Battle Hymn of the Republic

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free;
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.
Quote
The Watch on the Rhine

The cry resounds like thunder's crash,
Like ringing swords and waves that clash:
The Rhine, the Rhine, go to our Rhine,
Who'll guard our River, hold the line?
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

2. A hundred thousand hearts beat fast,
The eyes of all to you are cast,
The German youth, devout and strong.
Protects you, as he has so long.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

3. He casts his eyes to heaven's blue,
From where past heroes hold the view,
And swears pugnaciously the oath,
You Rhine and I, stay German, both.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

4. While still remains one breath of life,
While still one fist can draw a knife,
One gun still fired with one hand,
No foe will stand on this Rhine sand.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

5. Should my heart not survive this stand,
You'll never fall in foreign hand,
Much, as your waters without end,
Have we our heroes' blood to spend.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

6. The oath resounds, on rolls the wave,
The banners fly in wind. We'll save
The Rhine, the Rhine, the German Rhine
Together we will hold the line.
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
: Your watch is true, the line stands here. :

7. So lead us with your tried command,
With trust in God, take sword in hand,
Hail Wilhelm! Down with all that brood!
Repay our shame with the foes blood!
: Land of our fathers, have no fear, :
|: Your watch is true, the line stands here

Metallica - one

It is based off of a war movie but i don't think it would be good for battle-music.

I think a good metal song for a battle scene would be Megadeth's instrumental "Into the Lungs of Hell"

It's actually entitled 'Lux Aeterna,' and it's not fair to bring it up in this thread. It's likely one of the greatest compositions of all time and should therefore be exempt from all comparison. ;)

one of my all time favorite war songs is the theme song for Medal of Honour: Allied Assault.
hell, i love the entire soundtrack of that game.

Up There Cazaly also makes me all tingly inside. ;D
Quote
Well you work to earn a living
 But on weekends comes the time
 You can do what ever turns you on
 Get out and clear your mind
 Me, I like football
 And there's a lot of things around
 But when you line 'em up together
 The footy wins hands down

 Up there cazaly, in there and fight
 Out there and at 'em, show 'em your might
 Up there cazaly, don't let 'em in
 Fly like an angel, you're out there to win

 Now there's a lot more things to football
 That really meets the eye
 There are days when you could give it up
 There are days when you could fly
 You either love or hate it
 Depending on the score
 But when your team run out or they kick a goal
 How's the mighty roar (hooray, hooray)

 Up there cazaly, in there and fight
 Out there and at 'em, show 'em your might
 Up there cazaly, don't let 'em in
 Fly like an angel, you're out there to win

 Up there cazaly, you're out there to win
 In there and at 'em, don't let 'em in
 Up there cazaly, show 'em you're high
 Fight like the devil, the crowds on your side

 Up there cazaly, in there and fight
 Out there and at 'em, show 'em you're might
 Up there cazaly, show 'em you're high
 Fight like the devil, the crowd's on your side
 The - crowd's - on - your - side...

Yeah, LOTR has some good battle music. Halo Video Game series has some good stuff too. Star Wars music seems a little too.... overdone methinks.

anything by Wagner, he was inspirational to Hitler so I dare say you could consider it war music.

Thought I'd bump this.

The soundtrack from Alexander Nevsky ( a Russian film) is brilliant. If you're looking for war music, download "The Battle on the Ice: April 5, 1242" by Sergei Prokofiev from iTunes or buy the soundtrack as a whole. It's a great score.
Yes. Of course.
