Kanetsv - My new creature
« on: March 27, 2006, 07:13:48 pm »
Okay I made a new creature!
This is it!

I think it's my best yet!

Okay just kidding.

THIS is my new creature.

This is the Kanetsv in it's creature stage.
The planet the Kanetsv live on is so far from the star it orbits that the planet is in a permanent night.
The planet is incredibly volcanically active, which provides all of the heat for the creatures.
There are vast plains filled with steam vents and hotsprings.
Many of the volcanoes are erupting all the time with a constant flow of magma.
The creatures on the planet generally live on the plains where there is the most concentrated amount of heat.
Each creature has one, or several, ways of dealing with the severe lack of light on the planet.
Most, like the Kanetsv, have many large incredibly sensetive eyes to see in what little light there is.
Some have increased senses of smell or hearing.
You might think being able to see heat would help, but with all of the volcanic activity it would be impossible to tell creature from geyser cloud.
The Kanetsv are herbivores that roam the geyser plains.
They have a unique defensive ability to ward off most predators.
Like a firefly or an anglerfish on earth, they can light up parts of their bodies.
Of course for the Kanetsv it is 99% of their body that can be light up.
They are able to make any shape or color they want on their skin.
The most common however is an incredibly concentrated blast of white light which temporarilly blinds the attacker (some of the bigger Kanetsv have been known to permanently blind an attacker).
They have flaps that can fold down over their eyes to protect them when they need to use their defensive light blast.
Because of this most species have learned to just leave the Kanetsv alone.
This ability to make shapes and colors on their skin is also their way of communicating.
Kanetsv do not have voice boxes of any kind.
Because of this they have already formed the beginnings of a written language even before reaching a tribal stage.
They use different symbols to corrospond with different things and activities.
If they want to go to a nearby tree, they will make a representation of that tree.
The ball on the end of their "tails" are the most controllable parts of their bodies.
They can make very detailed pictures on the ball.
The way their lights work, when they display an image, it will stay there even when they stop concentrating on it.
Any patterns or symbols will stay light untill the Kanetsv makes a decision to change it or turn it.
Kanetsv have a very large brain located in the humps on their backs.
Most of the brainpower goes to controlling the lights.

The picture shows them in a green/red just because I wanted to add color.
They are naturally a dark grey color, which isnt very interesting to look at.

Anyway, thats enough for now.
These are the creatures I mentioned in my Kawona thread that will eventually keep all of the galaxies records.

Also, if anyone would be so kind as to attempt to draw this for me?
I know my artistic skills are so-so and this idea is way beyond anything I could do.
My little drawing doesnt do it justice.

the pic isn't that bad and it looks great, atlthough the limbs and hands/feet do look wierd (I have problems drawing the hands as well). If you want someone else to draw it, you should add some more description though.

I also like their homeworld. It's like the opposite of Asimov's Nightfall. It must be very moody, with hissing vents and the glow of magma here and there... not a tourist place!

I disagree, I think tourists would love it... the ViS homeworld on the other hand...
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

This is what you would see if you went to look at the Kanetsv in their natural environment.
It would feel like a sauna and you could hear bubbling water and geysers all over the place.

(this is not an animated picture if you are waiting for it to do something, it's just really frackin' dark).

Without the disclaimer it's the classic example of "how to keep an idiot in suspense"  ;D

Tribal Age Kanetsv.
They have not yet developed any clothing or anything because:
1: It is too hot to need them.
2: It it too dark to be able to see them.

And I just realized that this guy will have to be somewhat modified as he looks incredibly unbalanced right now.
Looks like he will just fall backwards.
So this is not the final Tribal Age Kanetsv.

Re-done Tribal Age Kanetsv.

Interesting fact:  Kanetsv is just the name given to them by the Kawona (the first sentient race the Kanetsv met in space).
They do not actually have a name you can say out loud since Kanetsv cannot speak.

Wow, I love it!

The colours go really well together actually, even if they're supposed to be gray, the current colour scheme would work well for a dark environment.
