Pyrodon - My Creature
« on: March 25, 2006, 11:33:20 pm »
Ok this is a simple MS paint pic, better pics to be posted soon.

The Pyrodon is a flying reptile with the intelligence of a cat or dog at mid-creature stage. The Pyrodon can grow to be around 1-2 feet tall. Note: Plural of pyrodon is pyrodon, not pyrodons. Why? cuz is said so.

sub-species- the mountainous pyrodon and the tree dwelling pyrodon are the main groups.

Flight- It uses its main wings for lift and thrust while using its tail fins for sharp turns and stability.

Diet- primarily carnivorous: insects and small animals (Mice-rabbit sized), can eat fruits if needed.

Homes- mountainous pyrodons often build on cliff edges or in mountain caves. they often use rocks to build primitive walls around their nests. tree dwellers build nests inside trees or on the branches, thorny vines and sticks are often used to protect their nests from predators.

Hunting- Pyrodon swoop down from the sky and snatch prey up with their forearms. insects are often eaten in flight while larger prey is usually killed and brought back to the nest.

Planet- (unnamed at the moment.) the planet is an earth sized moon circling a gas giant. the planet has an atmosphere slightly denser than earth's. the atmosphere consists primarily of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon-dioxide. geographically the planet is mostly forest, swamp, and mountain. There is one small ocean but most of the planet's water exists inland in swamps, lakes, ice, and rivers.

Star- the star is quite new and still surrounded by nebular gases which blocks quite a bit of light but allows heat and radiation to pass through.

climate- hot summers, cold winters. during summer it is never truly dark because light reflects off of the gas giant illuminating both sides of the planet(moon), in winter it is quite dark because the gas giant blocks the sun.

geological conditions- unstable compared to earth. the gas giant's great gravity causes a lot of stress on the planet(moon).

moon- (a moon orbiting a moon :P) quite small, almost classified as an asteroid.

UPDATE #1______________

Evolution- over hundreds of years Pyrodon become smarter and form packs. Packs work together to fortify their homes much like they did when they lived solo. Pyrodon now work together to kill larger prey. Soon tree-dwellers begin to use sharpened sticks to kill animals. Fire is discovered and is used to scare away predators and cook food. Group hunting and primitive spears cause a surplus of food. This extra food is traded for crystals mined by the mountain tribes. For the first time the Pyrodon appreciate things for their aesthetic value.

Tribal stage- Pyrodon begin to build primitive tree houses in the trees and stone buildings in the mountains. Both species begin using crystals for spear tips, jewelry, currency, knives, and other tools. Pyrodon consider the crystal to be sacred, they believe that when Pyrodon die their soul becomes a crystal. Every crystal contains the soul of one of their ancestors. Deceased Pyrodon are burned so their soul can be released from the body. The Pyrodon discover a volcano rich in quartz. They begin to mine it. Soon after the mining began the volcano erupts and the Pyrodon believe that the spirit of the mountain is angry and the Pyrodon build a temple at the base of the volcano out of the quartz that they had taken. They believe that the spirit of this mountain is the king of spirits, the God who created the world.

i know, originally it was able to produce small flames but i decided it probly wouldn't be possible in Spore so i gave up that idea. but i liked the name Pyrodon so i kept that despite that it was no longer pyro.

I ask you this.....has anyone actually seen a purely 'original' creature on this forum yet? Every creature is based on some form of Earth animal. Whether it has legs, fins, eyes, or anything like that, then it is a copy of an Earth creature. So whats the big thing about dragons? I say it is impossible for the human mind to create anything purely original.......thats why it bugs me when people say their creature is original - no its not. All our creatures are hybrids of many Earth animals, mixed together to form a 'new' creature. Its like saying to an alien...imagine a tree. If they haven't seen a tree before, it would be impossible for them to imagine one. So if we take it to that extent....who actually cares about originality in the first place?  I say just let people create what creatures they are comfortable with, and don't harass them with hypocritical comments like....thats not original.

I would call nearly every one of Hydromancerx's creatures original.

My Nauceans are not the best example of originality(being a mixture of a dolphin/raptor/squid). However I think my Umbilical Stilt-walker and Paraglider Tongue were original and not really like any creature on Earth.

considering the pyrodon is only 1-2ft tall i doubt any dragons slayers will be necessary. a single shotgun wielding human would be enough to wipe them out at creature stage. but once they reach city stage you may want to be careful.  8)

I don't think its so much the lack of 'purely original' creatures that bugs most, but the fact that so many people are recreating animals that so clearly represent a a single species of mythological beast.  Dragons, and the idea of dragons have been around since nearly the beginning of human story-telling.  Every culture has a story of a dragon or something similar.  I think that's the main problem.  However, you can take the dragon design, and make it unique.  For example, if you take the head and sling it underneath the belly of the dragon, then make all four limbs wings that can double as legs, and then split the tail and put two hand/claw manipulators on the ends, then you have a more original design than the standard dragon.

By the way, your Pyrodon is actually kind of cute  :)
Leave to a Thark his head and one hand and he may yet conquer.
