I saw this game being demoed at GDC this year and it was quite cool. The dogs looked extremely realistic and you could use the microphone to talk to your dogs and give them commands (sit, stay, roll over, etc.). I love dogs and I think I might have to get this one...

Yeah, they are a bit scary looking I guess. They look sort of like photographs textured onto (relatively) low-poly models, so it's a strange combination.

Some of these remind me of our current dog - small with the dark and tan colors.  I wonder how she'll react if I'd play this and it starts barking...

I saw this game a couple months ago. I thought it was kinda weird, did seem to have much of a point to it. I do love pet games but only if there's a point, anyone remember the Choas from Sonic Adventure. I loved them so.

And it's such a big hit?  I say again, why?  What's the point of the game?  Why would anybody want to spend 30+ on a game where you walk/feed/pet a dog?

..because its fun? :D maybe someone can't have a real dog and this would be fun for them.. maybe its good practice for some young ones in case they get a pet... what was the point of Tomagotchi? Yet it was very popular, you still had to take care of them to the point of being annoying. ;) Real dogs can cost alot more and you really have to feed them. The one I have will probably last for years now and since I'm traveling so much, I have to find someone to look after her. At least with the game, I can just shut it off. ;)

I asked a japanese friend of mine about Nintendogs and she said that a lot of guys are playing it over there because the girls are playing them and when the two DSs pass by each other the dogs bark. Sounds like a pretty ingenious way to pick up girls to me.
According to the website, it comes out Aug.  22nd.

Well I bought the game so i thought I would just post to the existing thread. I got the Lab and friends. I haven't got very far in game yet, I bought my dog. Once you get it home, you have to pet it with the stylus to get it to calm down. Then you get to name it. You speak the name into the mic until it learns its name. Then you teach it to sit, using the stylus and and the word sit. So... my dog now knows how to sit. And thats as far as I have gotten. Not far enough to give a good review but I'll keep posting as I learn new things and let you know if I think its worth it.

im playing nintendogs right now. Personaly I enjoy advance wars duel stike alot more, but this isnt too bad.

I would say its one of those game you pick up for a 30 min period everyday and not one you would pla nonstop.

And no I havent seen any stange animations (ie, like the on on the website's homepage) I think that was some pictures superimposed or something.

It can be hard to make enough money to keep the game moving at a fast pace in the begining becuase you can only let your pet compeate in contests 3 times a day and you can only walk it every 30 min. But once you get your 2nd / 3rd dog money wont be that big of an issue becuase every dog can compeate 3 times. And in the higher lvls of competition it can easily make enough money to get you by.

The dog animations are sooth, and they all have different personalities. (ie my labrador is a compleate coward with my other dog will run head long into a wrestling match with another in the park.

I personaly think that you should refrain from getting this game unless your into the virtual pet thing though, simply becuase it might get tedious after you master the contests to continue on playing this game for "the fun of it."
The replay value is in all the dogs to unlock and the easter eggs you can find when your dogs play together.

I am very sure it might not apeal to everyone. But it is definalty a new and interesting game that I have been enjoying for the past few days.

This thread was created 6 months ago. And gaming steve called it nintendo dogs so that name will stick forever.

btw. nintendo dogs sucks. its a fantastic game for the first week but under all the cuteness then its nothing more than a tech demo that completely lacks any substance to motivate you to keep playing. i think if you'd survey nintendogs owners, 90% of them would tell you they quit caring for their dog for several weeks now.

not the point, remember, expand user base, sell games cheap but make'em cheaper. Nintendogs just came out in England and the press are lovin' it. its pretty much 5/5 or 10/10 reviews in all the non-gaming papers and magazines, which are read by non-gamers, the people Nintendo wants to snag.

Thought I'd give an update on my game. At first the game seemed rather boring but I have started picking it up and playing it more and more every day. My dog now knows about 5 tricks although we aren't doing well in the competitions. She doesn't listen well. I think part of the problem was trying to understand what to do during the game and how to train the dogs. It's not a game that you will play non stop but one that you might pick up and play several times throughout the day. I've linked up with two other players and our dogs have played together and I got one new breed in my game. That was fun. What I don't like is having to use the mic. I wish it could all be done with the stylus. You can't really play it in public.

What is the point of this game?

Uh, what is the point of that question?

The point  of the game is  to have fun.And the game allows you to have lots of fun.Not adrenaline packed serious fragfests full of hot photon death to the aliens type of fun, but calm relaxed fun.
Even if you don't like the game yourself, you have to credit Nintendo for expanding the game market and the whole concept of what games are. This game will be seen as a very important milestone in gaming.

Kudos (or should that be Kudogs?)

Updating my Nintendog play. I got a chance to play alot while waiting at the hospital during my dad's surgery. The game is getting a little more fun. I now have three dogs. You can make more money with more dogs. You can keep up to five dogs at the "Dog Hotel" and they will stay fed, watered and happy. A good place to put them if your busy but you have to have at least one in the house.

I learned how to play quietly, you just don't do the obedience competitions. The disc and agility can be done without sound as well as taking them for a walk. My dogs do well and have won up to $300 then next time they'll do badly and go back down a level which is ok because I know they can do well again the next time. The hardest trick to teach them is to spin in a circle which they need to do for the higher obedience comp.

I also unlocked the Pug breed and German Shepard Breed by getting enough trainer points. It's not a game you'll play all day but its one that you might pick up for 30 mins a days.
