The Galactic Library
« on: March 15, 2006, 05:45:55 am »
i'm just an unemployed concept artist...

All photoshop- 40 mins
Thought that a galactic library would be very usefull in spore. Heres what i came up with for my species, soo many people i know are getting this game, i've showed this around and they want me to do theirs in the same style, i also am a web designer so i plan on throwing afew together, maby a Naucian one ?
I'm makeing up a questionare that i'd give to people to fillout then slot it into a templet, what do you all think ?  Will ? haha, i heard they read these boards..
make sure you check out the high rez link.

I love it  :o
would be cool if you had a galaxy, like that one on the spore homepage
then there would be a link on each solarsystem that directs you to a creature  :D

I wonder if you've read this tutorial judging from your noise>layer>erase method for stars:

http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html

If you have, I hope you've also read this one:

http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_planet.html

Just to improve on your planets and such ;). That guy is amazing.
The composition looks good, although the sketch looks a tad out of place, but that perhaps could be the absence of colour there.

I would love to see a flash out of this, with dynamic content, hmm....

nice idea, you should do a "pattern" so people can download it and put their own text and planet picture so they will look similar and you will be able to do a real library :)

If you dont mind i would like to use your current artwork and modify it for my specie

Tell me if its ok :)

I meant the way you organise your artwork, like text on the right, planet and moon on 2/3 of left name on top left, etc...

Wow, to have a spore galactic library with the same depth of information as your example alti... that would be awesome!
I suppose as long as we are all given a template we could add as much info as we'd like.
Planet history, major events, etc, all player written in an easy to use template....
Interesting!

Those tutorials were really cool (finally, a good use for lens flares). It's funny, how you never really stop learning photoshop techniques.

Anyways, here's mine. I used the magic wand and Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to make the ocean. And also that emboss trick from the tutorial, to give it a little more definition.

nice planets :)

i always forgot about flare since i never use it :D

there's a 30 days trial of photoshop somewhere on the net, don't know if it's still active

If my 3d prog want to work again i'll try to make a gif animation for the planet ( or entire solar system :P ), I'll need a texture map of the planets but that should be easy for everyone to do. ( even if you don't have photoshop :D )

( I will do anything to kill some time waiting for spore :D )

Hmm, what would you recommend to be the way of easy mapping, cillindrical or...

But the problem really is, they would look a bit more crappy if you make a gif ani out of it. At least nowhere as good as they look now, I think I prefer stills that way. And then just add in some slight dynamic content with minor animation. Like blinking stars moving panels, scrolling text, shooting trough the stars quickly and then focusing at another planet, things like that.

Just post a text(like the others), image of your creature. And physical detailed explanation of your planet. And then if this things i aroll, it could be implemented. It's easy to change the colours, and sizes and such of a planet, and a completely new one is also done in a whim so.

Ok then.

Planet name: ViSta
Planet description: Climatically metastable.
Surface temperature varies by around 5 degrees only across entire planet surface. Average temperature: 17C

Atmospheric composition in order if abundance: Nitrogen, Oxygen, water vapour, Carbon Dioxide, Xenon. Planet has very large cloud cover and has a misty atmosphere.

Surface topography: Flat plains eroded by rainfall, oceans cover 80% of surface. No mountains or rough terrain.

Civilisation name: ViS administration
CiV bio: The ViS evolved as complex creatures. the baren nature of their planet's land caused them to strive for simplicity above all else. When they achieved a sufficient level of technology they built new, simplified bodies for themselves and gave over the running of their empire to a colossal AI they designed. The ViS are found throughout the galaxy filling white collar administrative positions and running colonies on barren planets. They hold a secret respect and longing for the sea of their home planet.

This is perfect!

As for the text it is the "Naucean Homeworld"

Nauceanica
Class IV Planet: Warm Tropical Planet
Nauceanica hold 10 biospheres, Ocean, Shallows, Deep Ocean, Swamps, Jungle, Desert, Grasslands, Woodlands, Mountains and Subterranean. It it too warn for the poles to gain ice and only the highest peaks in the thin atmosphere will get snow.

Moons
Nauceanica is orbited by 2 moons Sirenia ( large) and Sina (small). Sirenia is a dead rock while Sina has mild volcanoes. Due to its small size it is too small to keep an atmosphere.

Suns
Nauceanica obits a dim red dwarf called Au and is the 4th planet from it. In the Neighboring solar system is a Super Blue Giant. Is close enough to have an effect on the heating of the planet thus making it more tropical than it would be without it.

Nauceans
A Sentient Warm-blooded Bipedal Marine Vertebrate. They are known for their biotechnology and have vast intergalactic zoos all over the galaxy. They are genrally peaceful and continually explore other worlds for new species to be advducted and studdied. However they do not abduct any sentent species and leave them alone until they reach space travel beyond their solar system.
__________

As for a picture use anything ya like from here

http://www.sporewiki.com/Naucean_%28Concept%29

Or draw your own style of my Nauceans if you wish.

Looks a little streach i think you need to put more ocean horizontally.

Any better?

More ocean=bigger file=longer to make :P

Much!

Mind if i use it on Spore Wiki?

Go ahead, pretty much anything I post can be used by people.

Also if you're interested I have a "Ye Olde Mappe" of Nauceanica:

You cant really tell but there is a ship and a half submerged Abyssal Krillian on there.

Okay, this should be complete unless I missed something. I may end up taking the two main stars out if they seem like the clutter the image too much.

Alrighty here we go:

This is the Agksitrodon home planet and moon.

And here is the Agkistrodon galaxy. The red box is the location of the Agkistrodon home star system. The galaxy itself is named Grichten.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to make it bigger.   :'( Anyone know?

(Both of these were done with Photoshop 7)

Probably, but it's so easy to make a sun out of 'em even if they don't look top notch.
