Kawona/Kawenu - My new creature(s)
« on: March 13, 2006, 12:08:55 am »
Allright, finally decided to make my own creature.
It's name is the Kawona.
It is basically a very odd looking duck.
Have not yet designed it's culture/habitat, but do plan to.
It has 4 wings, 2 arms, 2 legs, and a so-far completely useless head-fin.
Capable of flight and swimming on the surface of water.
It uses it's tail to propel itself in the water since it's feet are just the 2 toes.
I did not notice untill after it was finished but the wings should be much much larger than I have them drawn here.

Forgive the not-so-great drawing please.
It's been a while since I've actually just sat down and tried to draw something.

EDIT:
Removed un-related creature.

That's something quite different if you compare it with other creatures. Cool animation  :D
The second creature is also very original.
A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. Let there be one ruler, one king.

First off, more info.
The Kawona is an amphibious species, which means that they can live in water or on land.
They have gills located on the top of their beaks for breathing underwater.
The Kawona is capable of flight and also fast swimming due to their four wings and tail that double as fins.
Their bodies are almost completely covered in very light, feather-like scales.
They have 3 fingers on each hand, and 2 toes on each foot.
Their beaks are much more flexible than most birds because of the Kawona's close relation to fish, this giving them much more freedom in their speach.
An adult Kawona is roughly 3/4ths the size of the average human.
Not being a very predatory species (other than to small fish) the Kawona has developed a light blue hue so that it may better blend in with the ocean and the sky to more easily hide from predators.
Amuyeli, the Kawona homeworld is made up of one vast ocean with small plateau islands jutting up from the sea floor.
There are very few land-based races on the planet because of the lack of land.
Most species are either flyers, swimmers, or amphibians.
And now a brand new, much better picture of an average Kawona.

Used Terragen to show roughly what the Kawona homeworld, Amuyeli, would look like.
On top of each of the plateau-islands would be a few incredibly massive trees.
The trees on the plateaus are easily twice as high as a redwood and three times as thick.
Due to their odd locations the trees have developed a way to seperate the salt from the seawater.
Any extra fresh water that the tree does not need is then pumped up to the top of the trees where is collects in large bowl-like leaves.
Since the trees are constantly pumping water the leaves often overflow creating small waterfalls falling from the tops of the trees.
The islands are where 90% of Amuyeli's creatures are found, either living in the tree, on/in the island, or in the surrounding waters.
Unfortunately Terragen cannot show the trees that would occupy these islands.
Just imagine those in.
4 or 5 trees for the biggest island in the picture.

A closer look at the islands of Amuyeli.
The Digalvdi Tree (or Tree of the Heavens) is the main source of life on the planet.
It rains maybe 2 or 3 times a year on Amuyeli, and even then it is only a light rain for a day or so.
By purifying the sea water, The Digalvdi trees provide the only truly fresh water on the planet.
The Digalvdi Trees have a double canopy, creating large pockets of open space between the layers.
This space is home to the majority of the planet's flying creatures, including many Kawona.

I dunno if its intentional or not, but they do look Native American. the bronze age one looks like it has Mesoamerican influences.

They are closely based on the peoples that lived in the Americas before the settlers showed up.
All of the names are that way too.
Of course the problem with this is that I don't have a lot to base anything on after the bronze age (which I didn't even realize untill after doing Bronze Age stuff).
