Great job this week, really fun to listen to. Here's some comments:

I've played Marathon on the Mac, since you wanted to know. ^_^

I liked your review of Metal Gear Acid. Heh, personally, I don't know what they were thinking when they made a turn-based card-strategy game of Metal Gear. Crazy crazy. *shakes head*

All this hype for the next-gen consoles is pretty funny, IMO. People trying to decipher all the secret messages from OurColony.net is hilarious. I don't see why they can't just wait five or so weeks...

You know, I agree that the anticipation for a game is sometimes as fun as playing it. (Sometimes more!) Especially for a game that we have really high expectations for...depressing when the game lets us down, but great when it exceeds our expectations.

Oh, and I guess both of us need to play Metroid Prime 2. (Of course, I need to buy it first, which I'm going to be doing sometime soon.) But do you really want to risk marring the cover? So pretty and shiny... ;)

You want a good strategy-based game? I too love Fire Emblem and Advance Wars ... give Shining Force a try for the Gensis. I'm sure you can find the ROM as it's still a very popular game. That is a fantastic game and plays exactly like Fire Emblem. I would also recommend Shining Force II and Shining in the Darkness, all for the Gensis. The graphics are more or less exactly the same as what you find on the GameBoy and the games are really great. Play those before you play Metal Gear Acid.

And don't forget the new Fire Emblem comes out next month for the GameBoy (one of the reason's I'm playing it again).

Didn't they remake the original Shining Force for the GBA?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It got pretty good reviews, here is what Gamespot had to say (they gave it an 8.3, which is high for them!):

Quote
What is surprising, however, is that with just a handful of upgrades, Sega and Atlus have taken one of the best strategy role-playing games on the Sega Genesis and have made it into one of the best strategy RPGs on the Game Boy Advance. Those of you who have played Nintendo's Fire Emblem to death will want to check out Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon.

Shining Force II is the greatest game of all time. A love the music.
But besides that, I posted one of my long-assed comments about your podcast in the comments thing.
Good stuff. Your podcast I mean.
I've got to tell you, I've never heard of podcasting before I came here. I still don't technically understand the term, but whatever.
All I know is that you talk about interesting topics. This one was a lot slower than most, but that may partly be the slow news week deal.

I wanted to suggest that you actually do make them longer. I like the 70 minute ones. When I free up some time, I usually end up with a -lot- of free time. That gives me plenty of... uh, time to listen to a nice full report.
But since news was slow, as you say, I guess there couldn't have been much to add. It doesn't really sound like much is going on.
I wish True Fantasy Live Online would come back.
Of course, my interest for that has been replaced with a new interest for Uncharted Waters Online. I love Uncharted Waters: New Horizons.
I find it odd that Square-Enix wasn't on that E3 list.

Anyways, keep it up.

Good podcast.  I have a couple of comments.  Firstly, you don't play as Alyx in the Half-Life 2 expansion as far as we know, she's just going to be featured more instead of popping in and out of the game like in Half-Life 2. (At least that's what I understood from the article in PCG UK)  Also, Valve is definantly making the expansion. (And this is just me being nitpicky, but HL2 was technically announced in various magazines in April 2003, not at E3 2003)

On the convention front, ECTS (European Computer Trade Show) died. (Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=58610)  While not being anywhere near as big as E3, it was a longstanding announcement platform for Blizzard Entertainment so I'll be sad to see it go.  Just figured you should know if you didn't already. :D

As for Spore expansions, I think they would probably focus on things like adding new playstyles and features. While the game sounds like it has an extremly long breadth, it doesn't sound very deep.  (What I mean is it sounds like everything will follow the cell->water critter->land critter scheme and all critters will lay eggs.  Perhaps an expansion will allow for things like organisms that stay in the water all through their evolution, or begin their genesis in space.  Stuff like new options for your creatures that will do things like allow budding or live birth.)  Perhaps even further down the line they could make an expansion that allows you do really wacky stuff like robotic life or intelligent parasitic lifeforms.

And since you asked, I did play a little bit of Marathon on the MAC (No pathways into darkness though).  Haven't played Halo or Halo2 though.  Marathon rocked hard, none-the-less.  I really think it would have overtaken Doom as the defacto FPS of the early '90s had it been released for the PC instead of the MAC.  Also, you can add me to the list of people who bought Metroid Prime 2 and then never really got around to playing it.  (I got tired of forgetting to scan things and therefore never being able to get 100%.  I eventually just stopped playing after about an hour..)  Can't argue with your assement of Half-Life either.  I've beaten that game over 15 times since I got it Christmas of '98. :D (I've lost exact count, but it damn near know the levels like the back of my hands. :D)

Anywho, I think I jabbered on long enough.  Again, good podcast.  Can't wait for next weeks!

Say, Steve, are you still planning on putting up that interview seperately, or are you going to be putting it in a future Podcast?

I've got to agree with you about anticipation and waiting for a game is sometimes more fun than the game. When I was waiting for Half-Life 2 to come out, I had some great times. It was almost a letdown when it game out, because it was sort of anticlimactic. The game definitely had a different feel than I expected, so that was probably it.

Another great job, Steve!

I listen to Podcasts mostly in the car, and I look forward to yours every week. So far the other game casts are really, really horrendous (at least the ones I've heard).

Keep it up!

I've got Metroid Prime 2, and although I havn't had enough time to really play it, I have to say I'm finding it not nearly as good as the first one. Not that it hasn't been fun, but it just doesn't feel as...metroidy. Kinda has a bit of a halo feel to it now. Could be I'm just hallucinating here though! Probably not enough MP2 and RE4 is the reason! Preeccciousssess..

Thanks, the interview will come. There have been technical issues with getting the phone recording equipment working, but I will get it working... Of course, it's now more a scheduling issue at this point, but I plan on having more interviews in the future.
